DISTRICT 14 L LIONS NEWS Message from District Governor Gerald Chapman… June 2014 Lion Amy Higgins, Editor [email protected] Fellow Lions Lioness and Leos, Lions Club's activities are revving up with the changing season. Make sure some of you have a Lions logo on something or signs to identify the Lions. I see Lions holding benefits and no indication that it is by the Lions. There are ten clubs that still don't show up at LCI as having reported the officers for 2014-2015. This will be a problem all year until it is fixed or the club is placed in suspension. There is a PU101 form available on the District 14L website. Ignore the request to contact Adobe when it opens. You can fax or mail the PU101 as well. There are clubs without officers reported, and they didn't have anyone sign up to attend officer training on May 31. The DG and DGE will help you if you contact us. Get those PU101's submitted to Anna, the PA Lions State Office, and Lions Clubs International. Email addresses are a great help if you want a newsletter next year. The newsletter will still be available www.lions14l.org. The Popeye Fleck Fishing Derby will be on June 29 at Beacon Lodge. The PA Lions Appreciation Day at Beacon Lodge will be on July 20. Lions from District 14L will cook the chicken and serve the Lions. These are opportunities to be actively engaged as a Lion. You don't need a personal invitation to help. It has been a challenge for me to motivate Lion members to attend activities above club level. Since Lions are volunteers, negative motivation is not available. The positive motivation that works consistently is illusive. The Popeye Fleck Fishing Derby June 29, and the PA Lions Appreciation Day July 20 are the two motivators that have a lasting impact. Lion Jim Groff and Lion Arkey Morelli gave motivating presentation at the District 14L Lions Rally, but attendance could have been better. PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp is starting a new veterans camp called Project New Hope. If you feel more should be done for the veterans, become a more active Lion outside your club. Come down to an activity at Beacon Lodge to find out how to help the veterans. Thanks again for the support and friendship from the Lions of District 14L. Keep in mind what the mission of Lions International is: To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace, and promote international understanding through Lions clubs. Yours in Lionism, DG Gerald

Message from 2nd VDG Michael…

Hello Fellow Lions, Lionesses, and Leos, Here is my last message as your 2nd VDG. It's hard to believe that the year is almost up. It's been a year of trainings, meetings, visitations, and so much more, but also exciting and challenging. I am looking forward to moving up to being your 1st VDG and supporting DG Anna as she serves the district this coming year. We all need to be ready and willing to serve when we are needed and, as Lions, the world, the state, and our local community looks to us for help. By now the new officers in your clubs have been elected and now is the time to give them the help and support they need. A great place for new officers to get off to a good start is by attending the officers training class coming up this month. If you are a new or returning officer there is always something to learn to make you a better and more confident officer. Please make arrangements to attend. Yours in Lionism, Michael Brown

Message from 1st VDG Anna… Let me start by saying a special and heartfelt THANK YOU to DG Gerald for stepping up and taking the reign again to lead our District as Governor and to Lion Sue for her support also. I know it was very hard to step in at the time he did, but I believe he did a great job in leading us to a successful year. The State Convention was held in Pittsburgh with our International President Barry Palmer being the main speaker. The highlight was when International President Barry Palmer presented PDG Amos Shatzer with the Presidential Award. Congratulation to you, Amos! It was good to meet and greet Lions from all over the State of Pa. We are now getting ready for the International Convention in Toronto, Canada. I hope to see a large turnout there from our District. Remember to bring your walking shoes and join us in the International Parade, and don’t forget your passports. Yours in Lionism, DGE Anna Clark

District 14-L Club Officer Training

2014 – 2015 Lions Club Officers (Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries & Treasurers) and other interested Lions are encouraged to attend one of the two training sessions being provided. It is important that a representative of each club that has the ability to use a computer and internet attend. As we move more into the world of electronic reporting both LCI and the District rely on electronic reports. We can help to make this easy for your club. Even if you have been a club officer for several years, you will learn new tricks. This year the sessions will be broken out by position with a small interactive group approach. Saturday June 14th 9 AM – 11:30 AM Stone Creek Valley Lions Club Building, 5303 Cold Springs Road, Huntingdon PA 16652 Note: Coffee & Doughnuts will be provided.

Registration Form Please send this portion to PDG Larry Edwards, 1639 Timberline Drive, Altoona PA 16601, 814 943-

Reading When School Isn’t In Session Summer holiday is approaching for many students around the world. When schools close for seasonal or holiday breaks for days, weeks or months at a time, it’s critical for students to keep their reading skills sharp. Sadly, children whose families do not have access to books can fall behind. Through the Reading Action Program, Lions can promote literacy for children in need during off-school periods. Learn how our Reading Action Program partners can help your club make the most of existing resources and keep students reading all summer long!
