welcome to the Bay street Film Festival 2012!
The Festival is a premiere event for filmmakers from Northwestern Ontario and
around the world to show their work and to learn from industry professionals. As
well, it’s an opportunity for audiences to experience new ways to enrich their love
and experience of film.
This year, we’re celebrating “100 Years of Film in Thunder Bay.” Our filmmaking
history has paralleled the development of film in Canada and challenged the view
that production can only occur in major urban centres. Did you know that the first
Canadian amateur feature-length film was created in Thunder Bay? That Canada’s
first independent female filmmaker was from our city? That Robert Flaherty,
the pioneer of documentary film and director of “Nanook of the North” found
inspiration in Port Arthur?
Today, Northwestern Ontario is home to many award-winning filmmakers whose
work is screened globally. The Bay Street Film Festival is proud to be a part of the
evolution of the region’s film industry. Make sure you check out the exhibit at the
Baggage Building at the Waterfront where we celebrate the historic and ongoing
achievements of filmmakers.
We’re grateful to everyone who makes the festival a great attraction. Thanks to
the management and staff of the Finlandia Association of Thunder Bay and
Magnus Theatre for their support and enthusiasm. A special salute to the dozens
of people whose skills and commitment ensure that we can continue to offer a
broad range of initiatives.
See you at the screenings and around town!
Sincerely,
Michel S. Beaulieu

On behalf of my colleagues on City Council and the citizens of Thunder Bay, I am honoured to welcome everyone to the eighth annual Bay Street Film Festival.
To our guests from out of town who are visiting Thunder Bay, I extend our warmest welcome and hospitality. I encourage you to take time to enjoy the natural beauty and many attractions and opportunities our City has to offer.
Since the inaugural festival in 2005, the Bay Street Film Festival has expanded the horizons of thousands of Thunder Bay residents and visitors by screening hundreds of thought- provoking films, including those created by local filmmakers.
The Bay Street Film Festival’s longevity is a testament to the city’s growing film industry. This year marks 100 years of filmmaking in Thunder Bay, a fact we should all be proud of.
I would like to thank festival organizers and volunteers for their dedication and hard work. Your contribution enriches our community, energizes our downtown core and provides opportunities to local residents and visitors in support of the art of filmmaking.
Thank you to all and best wishes on another successful event.
Sincerely,
keith hobbs, Mayor City of Thunder Baywww.thunderbay.ca
