The first incident oc-curred onFridaymorningwhen a tourist wasstabbed and robbed.According toMbekweni
police spokesperson, ser-geant Nceba Vanqa, themanwas getting out of hiscar when two men ap-proached him, firstsmashing the vehicle’swindscreen before attackinghim. He was stabbed and robbedof photographic equipment, hiswallet and a cellphone.Security officers nearby heard
his screams and rushed to his as-sistance, but his assailants hadalready fled the scene.The emergency services were
contacted, but on the arrival of
anambulance, thevictimrefusedtreatment or transportation.According to a source who
wishes to remain anonymous,the tourist waswarned on his ar-rival by security guards abouthissafety.He,however,allegedlytold the security guards to leavehim alone as “he was writing po-ems”. The Dutch tourist is an av-

the driver of the Corsa, believed to
be from Cape Town, were killed onimpact. His name is not known.Snyders was ejected from the ve-
hicle and found on the golf course.He sustained cuts to his head andinjuries to his right knee. He wastransported to Paarl Hospital andhas since been discharged.Phillips, who matriculated from
Noorder-PaarlHighSchool,workedas an assistant winemaker at UvaMira in Stellenbosch after attend-ing winemaking courses in Francelast year. Before that, he worked atKWV as a cellar assistant for morethan 10 years.
His mother, Louise Louw, saidPhillips had a close bond with hisfamily, devoting his life to his chil-dren Lethom Martin (7) and LiamPhillips (1). “He was a very lovingman. We were very proud of him.”Phillips also leaves behind his

old fellowlearnerwhenthe17-year-old tried topreventhimfromleavingthe school grounds prematurely.Despite efforts by theDepartment ofEducation and theSouthAfrican
Police Services to curb violence in schools with projects such as theSafer Schools Programme, this type of behaviour continues to plagueour schools.Theprogramme’sstrategies include installingsecuritysystemswhile
at the same time, addressing the social environment by influencinglearner behaviour and byworkingwith schools tomobilise communitysupport for safe schools.But it is obvious that too little is being done.The first questionaskedmaywell bewhya 15-year-old boy is carrying
a knife to school? Has it become necessary to install metal detectorsand electric fencing at schools to ensure learners’ safety?If this needs to be done, it will, unfortunately, take a massive chunk
out of an already tight education budget.

“Die behoefte aan ablusiegeriewebydie taxi-staanplek inVanderLin-genstraat byShoprite is ’n knelpuntvir verskeie rolspelers. Die tekortaan geriewe het probleme geskepmet die higiëniese omstandighedeby hierdie staanplek,” het munisi-pale bestuurder, JohannMettler, in’n persverklaring gesê.Finansiering vir die projek is be-
kom van die Wes-Kaapse departe-ment van openbare werke en ver-voer. Die geld is aangewend en diemunisipaliteit het ablusiegerieweopgerigbydiéstaanplek.Hierdiege-
riewe is op20Oktober ingebruikge-neem.VolgensMettler is daar ’n ooreen-
koms gesluit met die taxi-vereni-gings om die area skoon te hou.“Hulle het ’n persoon in diens ge-neemomdiegerieweelkedag skoonte maak.“Shoprite het ook ingekoop en

Met die uitsettings van plaaswer-kers waaroor onlangs in die mediaberig is, is navrae gedoenoor die be-huisingsmoontlikhedewat reeds ja-re terug ter sprake was vir plaas-werkers in Drakenstein.Volgens die munisipale bestuur-
der, Johann Mettler, is plaaswer-kers in die verlede nie genoegsaamgeakkommodeer binne die behui-singsbeleid van die munisipaliteitnie. “Dit is egter onmiddellikaange-spreek deur die huidige raad na huloorname. Daar is besluit om die be-huising van plaaswerkers te priori-tiseer.”Volgens Mettler is die toeken-
ningsbeleid aangepas sodat 20%van alle nuwe behuising aan plaas-
werkers op die behuisingslys gegeeword. “Plaaswerkers (soos alle an-der inwoners) moet op die behui-singslys wees. Indien hulle van dielys verwyder is of afgeval het, kanhulleweerteruggeplaaswordinhulorde, mits hulle bewyse kan lewerdat hul wel op die lys was.”Hy sê daar word deurlopend hard
gewerk om te verseker dat alleplaaswerkers geregistreer is op diebehuisingsdatabasis. Plaaswerkersverkeer dan op gelyke voet met an-der inwoners op die lys.Paarl Post het in 2008 berig oor ’n

in the Elgin/Grabouw/Villiersdorp/Vyeboom, Hex River Valley, Ceres, Wolseley,Langkloof, Orange River, Robertson and Franschhoek/Simondium production areas.
These applications are part of the Deciduous Fruit Industry’s area wide action regardingthe control of fruit flies in the above mentioned areas.
BACKGROUND INFORMATIONFruit flies are a phytosanitary pest which leads to millions of rands direct damage every year and cancause trade restrictions to certain export markets. All available methods for control measures arepresently being used to fight this pest. Production areas close to residential areas are being hit thehardest by fruit flies because of insufficient control measures in these areas.The control measures that are being used at present may include the following:1. Monitoring of fruit fly numbers with traps containing either a pheromone or a controlled
release vapour attractant system.2. Sanitation in orchards and vineyards where fruit flies can hatch, hide or find shelter and food
to live on.3. Regularly applying fruit fly bait in orchards and vineyards.4. Releasing sterile males on a weekly basis.
GF-120 Fruit Fly Bait is registered for both ground and aerial applications in South Africa andother countries. All the ingredients are natural and GF-120 is used internationally as a very lowrisk product, which is organically certified by OMRI.
The main ingredients in GF-120 include the following:Plant protein and sugar formulation, with spinosad as the active ingredient. Spinosad is obtainedfrom a fermenting process of Saccharopolyspora spinosa which is a natural ground organism.When this product is used according to the recommendation, only 0.24g of the active ingredientwill be spread over a hectare in scattered droplets. If applied as prescribed, there will be minimalrisk for animals, human health, birds and any other organisms in the environment, as it will onlyattract and kill fruit flies.

“The trials consist ofhorse riders across thecountry taking partwhere the top five areidentified,” he ex-plains.
“A unique sport,”says Ingemar, “it is im-portant to bond andbuild a relationshipwithone’shorsewhichcan be challenging.And perfection is ev-
erything.”He aspires to take part in fu-
ture Saddle Seat EquitationWorldCupCompetitionsandtobe involved for the enjoymentof the sport.
“If there is one thing that Ihave learned it’s that I shouldnot let people down because
they have invested so much trust in me,” heconcludes.
