Community members found the baby and in- formed the police. Mbekweni Police spokesperson, Sergeant Nceba Vanqa, said that when police officers ar- rived at the scene, a community member ap- proached them with a baby in a blanket. The baby was crying. Members of the community were able to point out the mother of the child, who is origi- nally from Kraaifontein, but attends a local school in Mbekweni. The matriculant (18) was on her way to write exams when she unexpectedly went into la- bour. She was still wearing her grey school uni- form and had blood stains on her legs when po- lice approached her. She was accompanied by her aunt with whom she had been staying during her final exams. According to her aunt, she wasn’t aware of her niece’s pregnancy. The young woman told police she had aban- doned the baby as she didn’t want to disappoint her mother, who is a single parent, and because she wouldn’t be able to raise the child. She also said that she and the baby’s father had broken off their relationship. The baby and his mother were transported to Paarl Hospital where both were examined. Vanqa said doctors have reported that the baby is stable, normal and healthy, weighing 2,3 kg. The baby’s mother has not been arrested and police are investigating the matter. Social ser- vices have also been informed. According to Millicent Merton from the di- rectorate of communication at the Western Cape Education Department, the baby’s moth- er will be treated the same as any other matric- ulant who falls ill or is pregnant and unable to write an exam. If she can produce a valid doctor’s certificate, she will be able to write the supplementary exam in the first semester of the next school year. She says the WCED policy on Managing Learner Pregnancy in Public Schools, provides guidelines on how schools should support pregnant learners. These guide- lines are available on the department’s website. Mothers who feel that they can’t keep or take care of their babies can contact Open Arms of Hope for free counselling on 076 812 0783 or visit www.openarmsofhope.wozaonline.co.za. FOTO: MARYKE SWART

Fuelpricedecrease just in time for theholidayFRANS LE ROUX

I doubt that there is news that generatesas much happiness throughout the coun-try as that of a drop in fuel prices.

Nothing as simple provides so many smiles

across the board when it is announced on amonthly basis. Once again motorists will bereapingtherewardsfromtheglobalreductionin the sales of crude oil. This is in fact thanksto a couple of things but applause shouldmainly be given to those world-dominatingAmericans. The lovely folk living in the USAhaveinthepastcoupleofmonthsdecidedtheywill usemorenatural shale gas to power theirmassive country and due to this the global de-mand for crude oil imports have plunged.

In short then, South Africa has also beentaking advantage of this decision for the pastfour months. With four consecutive drops inthe price of all fuels types, motorists shouldindeed rejoice.

This year kicked off with three big increas-es from January through to March, whichbrought the price of 95 unleaded-petrol to astaggeringR13,98per litre.Reliefwasonly feltlater in 2014 as the price started to plummetfrom September onwards. If you calculateSeptember through to December the total de-cline is close to R2,00 per litre.

If you drive an average city car with a 50-li-tre fuel tankand fill it onceaweek, this savingisquietsignificant.YoucouldeasilysaveR100per week which quickly adds up to R400 forthe month. That is enough to nearly fill yourcar for a fifth time, if needed.Paarl Post posted a question on what our

readers make of this good news on our Face-

book page, to which they responded as fol-lows:

Grant Alfonso Petersen said, “Great stuff”,while a few others weren’t as positive.

JMMemorieswrote, “Andearly inJanuarythefuelpricewillgoupby86cjustasmotoristswill be returning from their holiday.”

Abigail Steenkamp summed up the situa-tion very aptly:

“Geez people, please stop moaning. If thepriceriseseveryonemoansandif itgoesdowneveryone still moans. A 72c decrease meansmore petrol and more petrol means morefun ... just enjoy the perk ... wedon’t getmanyof those in SA.” Motorists can look forwardto even more reductions in 2015.

With the fourth consecutive lowering in thefuel price, motorists can look forward to agood festive season. PHOTO: FRANS LE ROUX

Local createsnationalawarenessofmeningitisAfter Deidré and John Frederickslost their little girl to meningitis,Deidré went searching for an-swers and decided to start theMeningitis Association of SouthAfrica to create awareness aboutthe illness.

In 2010, three-year-old ChelseaFredericks died of meningococcalmeningitisafterbeingdiagnosed justa day earlier.

The Fredericks family’s lives liter-ally changed in a matter of hours.

“Chelsea started vomiting theWednesday afternoon. I brought herhome from day-care and gave hermedicine for vomiting. Later thatevening, it seemed that she was get-ting better, but the vomiting startedagain in the early hours of Thursdaymorning and she also had a severefever. We rushed her to the emergen-cy room. As we undressed her, wesaw red marks on her body that hadnot been there before. The doctor toldus that these were all symptoms ofmeningitis. At 18:00 that evening thedoctor pronounced her brain-deadand the morning of Friday 11 June, she passed away.”

Deidré can remember that 11 Junewas the start of the 2010 Fifa SoccerWorld Cup and as everyone else wascelebrating, their family was experi-encing their saddest day.

She said that as she walked awayfrom the hospital that morning, shewanted to know why it happened tothemandwhat thediseasewasabout.

“Idiscoveredthat therewasn’ta lotof information on meningitis availa-ble in South Africa. I started re-searching online as a coping mecha-nism and to understand what hadhappened to us.”

ShortlyafterChelsea’sdeath,Deid-réstartedtheMeningitisAssociationof South Africa with the support ofher family and friends.

“I knew that I was not the only par-ent unaware of the symptoms orsignsofmeningitisandwastherefore

determined to spread the message.”According to Deidré, this organisa-

tion is the first and only of its kindin South Africa and it is a memberof the worldwide organisation, Con-federation of Meningitis Organisa-tions Inc. She currently runs the or-ganisation part-time and hopes toopen a office in the near future.

Their mission is to educate, raisemoney and create awareness of men-ingitis among the public and healthcareprofessionalsinordertopreventdeathanddisability fromthedisease.

“With meningitis, time is of the es-sence. Early detection and treatmentare critical to a full recovery.”

They also provide grief and be-reavement counselling, financial as-sistance and support services to indi-viduals affected by meningitis.

“As meningitis can devastate fami-lies and communities, we aim to im-prove the quality of care for individu-als affected by the disease.”

Deidré explained that some of theearly warning signs or symptoms area fever, vomiting, headaches and ageneral feeling of unwellness.

She said that red spots show symp-

toms more specific to meningitis andsepticaemia and are less common inmilder illnesses. Limb pain, paleskin, and cold hands and feet oftenappear earlier than the rash, neckstiffness, adislikeofbright lightsandconfusion.

Other signs in babies are a tenseor bulging soft spot on their heads, refusing to feed, irritable whenpicked up, a high-pitched or moaningcry, a stiff body with jerky move-ments, or else floppy and lifelessness.Fever is often absent in babies underthree months.

“I believe we all can make a differ-ence by joining hands in the fightagainst this disease that can killwithin hours,” Deidré said.

What todoaftermatric?

Tandy-Lee Marinus, La Rochelle 2009:I mingled with the same friends

from pre-primary until my matricyear. Many of them were much moreintellectual than what I was, so hear-ingthattheywantedtobecomemarinebiologists and lawyers, definitelyraised the bar high.I completed my matric year in 2009

at La Rochelle Girls’ High School, aschool always encouraging itslearners to aim high.It was not until Grade 10 that I set

my mind on pursuing a career in themedia. At a young age, my fatherwould dragme along to his lectures atthe University of the Western Cape. Some would think this to be a smallgesture, butbeinga fatherof two,mar-ried,Accounting student and full timeemployee, was a glimpse of what wasexpectedofme.Hewas the first familymember to receive a degree and Ithought itwell that I follow inhis foot-steps.I was accepted for a three-year Na-

tional Diploma course in Journalismat the Cape Peninsula University ofTechnology.During my first six months I was

constantly contemplating whether Ihad made the wrong career choice.Coming from a school where there

was always structure and discipline, itwasdifficulttomaintainafterwards. The disappointment of travelling alltheway fromPaarl toBellville, to findthat unenthusiastic lecturers had notarrived forclass, leftmeextremelyun-motivated at times.I failed a subject during my first

year,requiringmetoredoitthefollow-

ing year, a minor but consuming set-back.ButIwentontocompletemysec-ond year and survive my first internjob, where I gained much experienceof the work.Itistheinvestigativeworkandnatu-

ral inquisitiveness of being a journal-ist that excites me.Learning however, did not stop

there, I endured seven months of un-employment, which caused manysleeplessnights. I cringeknowing that25,2%ofSouthAfrica’sworkingpopu-lation is unemployed. Deciding to at-tend university after school hasopened many doors.I will be graduating next year and

amnow proud to say that I havemorethan a matric certificate next to myname. At the age of 23 I have howeveryet to travel the world. I envy thosewho were lucky enough to take a gapyear.

Babette Beyers, Paarl Girls High2010:When I reached grade 11 at Paarl

Girls High School I had no idea whatcareer I wanted to follow.Idiscussed thiswithmymotherand

told her that I would then rather do agap year after matric to find some di-rection. Needless to say, my motherwasnottookeenonthisbuteventuallytold me that if I wanted to take a gapyear, then I must do something con-structiveandnotjustbumaround.Shetold me about the Rotary Youth Ex-change programme.I did my homework and this ap-

pealedtomeandIappliedforexchangeat Paarl Rotary. After various meetings, assess-

mentsandagruellingscreeningcamp,I was accepted.I wanted a totally different experi-

ence, so I chose Brazil as my homecountry for a year. All packed and ready to go, I set off

forSaoPauloinJanuary2011toatotal-ly strange country of which I knewvery little. And on top of that, I wouldbe spending a yearwith a family I hadnevermetandwhodonotspeakawordof English.I was enrolled into a school in Sao

Paulo and also did community workat a school forautism. For the first fewweeks I was completely disorientatedbecause of the huge communicationgap. Basically no one who I cameacross could speak English. But al-mostas if overnight, I started latchingontothe languageandwasable tostartcommunicating. While in Brazil I applied at AAA in

Cape Town to study marketing andcommunication and evenhad towritemy acceptance exams there.I had the time of my life in Brazil.

I travelled the country extensively. Ahighlight was a week-long trip on theAmazon, staying on a river boat withonly hammocks as beds.I learnt the language, culture and

beauty of this wonderful country andit issomethingthatcanneverbetakenfrom me. I also now have a Brazilianfamily as well as friends right acrosstheworld. I feel as if theworld’s doorsare open for me.During my year away from home, I

became independent and self assuredand am ready for anything that lifethrows at me.

Tandylee Marinus. Babette Beyers.

Fight for rights formore than16daysThe international campaign 16 days of Activism for No Violence againstWomen and Children has once again kicked off with much fanfare.Butat the same timewereadaboutayoungsterwhowasallegedly raped

by other children. Unfortunately incidents like these happen far too regu-larly on our own doorstep. The campaignwasborndue to themanydaily atrocitieswhichare com-

mitted against the most vulnerable members of our society.During thenext fewweeks, this campaignwill bemarkedbymanycere-

monies and functions, but it seems that once the 16 days are over, theplight of abused women and children is forgotten – let alone the abuse ofmen, which is never mentioned.Despite a world-renowned constitution and a legislative overhaul that

safeguards all people’s rights, South Africa is still home to high levels ofviolence, especially against women and children.Unfortunately no amount of policing can prevent most of these acts.

Itistheresultofamindsetwhichhasbecomeinherentinasocietysufferingat thehandsofan inadequate justicesystemandpolice force, wherepeoplethink they can literally get away with murder. Unless the powers thatbe focus on socio-economic upliftment and improved education, this willnever change. Most importantly, moral values should be instilled at ayoung age and the punishment should fit the crime.

Theysayitneverrainsbutitpours. And that is exactly what the pastmonth or so has been like for me.Bad luck raineddownonme like

a tsunami of bird droppings.Just when I thought it couldn’t

get any worse, I got knocked down– so badly that I actually did notwant to try to get up again. The last, well hopefully, was my

car’s clutch giving in just the otherday. Not only is it a huge inconven-ience not having wheels for a goodfew days, but the expense whichcomeswithit israthernumbifying. So kids, be warned, for Christ-

masImayhavetodigaroundinthekitchenandgaragetocomeupwithsome very low cost or unwantedgifts that may be hidden away un-der a heavy layer of dust.At times like this I wonder why

can life continuesodeliciously,un-disturbed until one day, a day likeany other, things start to go ex-tremely wrong. But after contemplatingmy past

month or so of badluck I begin to seethings in a differentlight. How bad have

thingsactuallybeen?I still have a roof

overmyhead, food tofill my tummy, somemoney in the bank(even though itmay only be amea-sly amount), a warm bed to sleepin and someone to love me – well, perhaps only my dog.So when people around me now

start griping about the blows theyhavebeendealt, likeabusinessdealwhich didn’t quite work out, ortheir child not being chosen for theholy-grail first team, I almost feelthe steamcomeout ofmyearswithanger.Things could be so much worse.

Returning to your vehicle, whichyou parked only a moment ago, tofind a window smashed and somemeasly belongings stolen, is notpleasant, but not as bad as a carcrash inwhichyoumaybeserious-ly injured or a loved one has diedYour child will no doubt recover

fromanirritatingboutofflu, whichhas been keeping you up all night, but round the corner a mother ispraying for her child’s life, who

probablywill notmake it to see an-other Christmas.Life is full of unpleasant surpris-

es.Thatiswhytheseminorsurpris-es that hit us should be hit rightback, full-fisted and with a smile.Even though I didbecomerather

irritated by my own spate of badluck, admittedly sometimes evenfeeling sorry for myself, I did man-age to regroup and realise that allthese ‘injuries’ I have incurred aresuperficial. I can truly thank mylucky stars that I can, for example, afford to replace the car’s clutch, andaboveallsharemysorrowsandfrustrationswith good friendswhowill make me laugh, forget aboutthesesillyirritations, andcontinuelife with a hop in my step.It is likemeeting people and ask-

ing“howareyou”.Moreoften thannotthereplyis:“Wellitdoesn’thelpto complain” or “don’t ask”.Then, the ladywhoworks forme

arriveseachmorning,neveramin-ute late. She too has had her fair

share of bad luck.Perhaps fair shareisn’t the right word,as it puts my littleblue days to shame. She was aban-

doned by her hus-band, leaving herwith a young childand no income in the

Eastern Cape. She was eventuallyforced to leave her child and homebehind to find greener pastures inthe Western Cape. She shares aflimsy house with more peoplethanmost of uswould feel comfort-able with at any given moment. And she is only practically able tosee her daughter twice a year. But she strides into my house,

soaked during a downpour or insearing heat, having walked fromthe taxi rank. Sometimes she doesnoteven feel toowellwhenthewin-ter bugs attack the soul. Her um-brella broken by a sudden gush ofwind and a hole has developed inher shoe en route. Each day, no matter what blow

shehastaken, shewillwalkintomyhouse with a true hop in her stepand thewarmest smile on her face, and say tome, as I grumpily departforwork: “MissLise, today isgoingto be another beautiful day”.

Begrafnis vanTinus Lineewasgeengewonebegrafnis nie

Graagwil ekmy teleurstelling uitspreek oor die wyse waarop diebegrafnisgangers tydens TinusLinee se begrafnisdiens behandelis.Ek is van Atlantis en het reeds

om 08:10 by die kerk opgedaag omvroeg sitplek te kry omdat ekdaarvan bewus was dat daar dui-sende mense by my vriend Tinusse begrafnis sou wees.Toe ek daar opdaag was daar

reeds begrafnisgangers vanafKaapstad.

stoele moes inderhaas gekry

As leraarwas ek opdie dag geen-

Silly fireworkcelebrationsOnce again an illegal spate of fireworkeruptions took place with Guy Fawkescelebrations recently. And not only forone evening, but for the entire week.It is rather ironic that these celebra-

tions are still taking place in SouthAfri-ca, becauseGuyFawkes isacelebrationwhichwasbroughtherebythecolonists. As a very large part of our society

blame colonists for somuch suffering inthepast, whyisitthattheynowcelebrateGuy Fawkes? And to top it all, I would like to know

whether those who are ruthlessly firingoff fireworks, actually know that GuyFawkeswas actually aman, and do theyknowwhat he did andwhy this celebra-tion takes place in England? As per usual, only fools rush in.

Wine industry’syoung talentKey wine industry representa-tives recently gathered at OudeLibertas in Stellenbosch toshowcase young talent beinglaunched into the sector.

HostedbythePinotageYouthDe-velopment Academy, guest speak-er Rico Basson, CEO of VinPro,gave his views on skills and attrib-utes essential to strengthening theSouth African wine industry’s po-sition as a significant player in theglobal market. To support his argument, four

Academy representatives spoke aspart of a new generation of well-qualified young people enteringthe industry. Two graduates, Dil-lon Uren, now working at AntonijRupert and Phelisa Moni fromSpice Route, plus two current stu-dents, shared their stories and ex-periences. These four, along withtheir fellow students, will bringtheir skills and qualities to benefitthe sector and play an importantrole in achieving the desired trans-formation of the industry. The Stellenbosch-based Pinot-

age Youth Development Academyruns a 12-month programme fordisadvantaged 18-25 year old SouthAfricans. Its innovative approachfollows the pattern of the work-placewith clear policies andproce-dures in place. Learning combines

technical theory with practicalplacements across the entire valuechain of wine, from vineyardthrough to tasting room. It also fo-cuses on personal development, giving its students the confidence, knowledge and ability to ease thetransition into the world of work.TheAcademy’s approach has de-

livered impressive results. Thefirst intake of 25 students complet-ed their studies in May 2014, witha 96% retention rate and all stu-dents achieving a 75% pass markor better.Within threemonths of complet-

ing the programme, 21 of the 24

graduates were in employment.Nikki Munro, programme di-

rector, strongly believes that theAcademy’s studentswillmakeavi-tal difference in the years to come.“Our Academy’s graduates havean excellent understanding of theA-Z of wine from a technical pointof view, strongly embeddedthrough their practical experi-ence. Combine this with a highlydevelopeddegree of self-awarenessand self-confidence and theyare al-ready bringing the requisite skillsand right attitude thatwill guaran-tee abright future for the country’swine industry.”

These bright students from Drakenstein are part of the Pinotage YouthDevelopment Academy.

Howmuch do you need to retire?SCHALK LOUW

Saving for retirement is a lot likebatting first in a cricket match.Youknowyouhave to save and doso to the best of your ability, buthow many “runs” do you trulyneed to retire comfortably? The easiest place to start is to

look at the income you currentlyneed to live. Most experts recom-mendthatyoushoulduseapproxi-mately 80% of your current re-quired incomeasabenchmark forwhat you need after retirement. Imyself will not necessarily guar-antee the reliability of this figure, but it provides us with a startingpoint nonetheless.I am going to try to keep my ex-

ample as simple as possible, butit would be wise to include morevariable that can affect you per-sonally, in this calculation.Exam-ples of variables include the ex-pectation thatyourhealthmayde-teriorate or that you may stillhave to cover debt such as yourbond, after retirement.Let us suggest that you current-

ly earnR15 000monthly.Byapply-ing the 80% rule, we will assumethat you will need R12 000 month-ly after retirement.Unlike food products, human

beings do not reflect “use by”datesandwehavetorelyona“safewithdrawal rate” to ensure thatwe do not outlive our savings.According to this rate, you

should be able to withdraw 6% ofyour portfolio yearly, without us-inganyof your remaining capital. This theory is based on the fact

that the historical return on theSA Stock market (since 1964) wasabout 8% more than the local in-flation rate, so if you limit yourwithdrawals to 6% of your portfo-lio, you should still have an addi-tional 5%-6%growth inyour port-folio to cover inflation. If you then expect to withdraw

6% of your capital annually, theamount in today’s rand valueshould look something like this:R12 000x12months=R144 000 (an-nual income), divided by 0,06 (6%safewithdrawalrate)=R2 400 000.Inflation factor: One of the big-

gest variables associated withyourretirementplanning, is infla-tion.If you do not compensate prop-

erly for thisvariable, youmayendup severely lacking on your re-quired total. This surely is also one of the

most difficult variables to take in-to account. How does one calcu-late something that still needs tohappen?Let us suggest that you are now

aged 40 and that you plan to retireat age 65 (25 years). Using the topof the Reserve Bank’s inflationtarget range, the best ‘calculatedguess’ we can offer on annual in-flation, is 6%.A6%annualinflationwillmean

that with your current R2 400 000requirement, youwill need a capi-tal of R10 715 928 to retire accord-ing to the above-mentioned crite-ria.For any queries in this regard,

phone 021 202 2712 or send anemail to [email protected].

Parsons to joinBestmed-ASG teamAshleigh Parsons (14) from Hu-genote High School in Welling-ton will officially join the Best-med-ASG women’s professionalcycling team for next year’s sea-son.

Multiple national track champi-on Ashleigh Parsons has signedwith the Bestmed-ASG women’sprofessional cycling team for the2015 season.

The14-year-oldthree-timenation-al track champion, who is also theWestern Cape road and time-trialchampioninheragegroup,willsignon as a first-year u. 16 rider.

Team manager Owen Botha saidtheywere looking forward to bring-ing the talented youngster on boardand groomingher for top-level com-petition.

The Wellington-based sprinterfirst grabbed the pro outfit’s atten-

tion with a dominating perform-ance at the national track champi-onships in Durban at the end ofApril.

There she won four gold medalsand broke the SouthAfrican recordin the pursuit and time-trial events.

“I realise that a team like Best-med-ASG is always on the lookouttoaddnewtalentandI’mveryproudto have this opportunity,” said Par-sons.

“I’m incredibly excited but nerv-ous at the same time, as it’smy firstpro team. It’s a dream come true.”

Shesaidshebelievedhertrackcy-cling experience would serve tostrengthen her performance on theroad.

“It’s important for any young cy-clist to ride on the track, as that iswhere the basic skills are learnt.”

Parsons, who is currently ingrade eight at Hugenote High

School, said itwasherultimate am-bitiontobecomeafull-timeproonceshe completed her schooling.

“Thesport is demandingand thatwould be the perfect reward for thehard work – to ride my bike as myjob.”

As part of the Bestmed-ASG set-up, she said she hoped to add the2015 national road title in her agecategory to her existing accolades.

“I think this is achievable withhard work.”

Extraeffort is somethingParsonsis not afraid of, as she juggles herdaily schoolwork and trainingschedule.

“It’snotalwayseasy,butwithdis-cipline and a little push and shovefrom my family, I manage it.”

With both her parents havingbeen competitive cyclists, she saidher involvement in the sportseemed somehow inevitable.

“At the age of four I started ridingshort fun rides and, after falling inlove with the sport, I entered myvery first Eric van Enter interpro-

vincial competition at age nine andhave never looked back.”

Her brother Alexander is a first-year junior provincial cyclist andher father is former junior Spring-bok rider Colin Parsons.

He said Ashleigh’s true commit-ment was demonstrated in Bloem-fontein a few weeks ago when shewas involved in a crash on day oneoftheinterprovincialtrackchamps.

“She bounced back for the timetrial the followingday, only tobe in-volved in another crash involvingan unauthorised vehicle in the fin-ish area.
