Reflection by Dianne Bergant CSS

The willingness to give all that one has is the central theme of today's

readings. They offer us three models.

Jesus is the ultimate example of heroic generosity. He first offered him-

self as expiation for our sin. Now, as the eternal high priest, he stands

before God as our mediator, pleading on our behalf, bringing salvation

to those who eagerly await him.

It is interesting to note that the other two models of selfless giving are

widows, individuals who are doubly disadvantaged by the patriarchal

societies of which they are members. Their generosity is religiously in-

spired, and it comes from women who had the least material posses-

sions to give. This kind of giving requires that we reach deep into our-

selves and almost strip ourselves of our hold on life, and that we do this

for religious reasons. The giving that is pictured in today's readings is

nothing less than heroic generosity.

God will not be outdone in generosity. Sometimes we become the ben-

eficiaries of obvious blessing, as was the case in the story of the wom-

an of Zarephath who was granted a year's supply of floor and oil. At

other times, we simply continue living life as usual, like the woman in

the temple who was unaware of the commendation that Jesus had giv-

en her. The truly generous do not look for reward. They carry out their

responsibilities and place the rest in God's hands. © Dianne Bergant CSS

Living the gospel – Hypocrisy

Throughout the gospels, what Jesus appears to abhor more than any-

thing else is hypocrisy. His harshest condemnation of the scribes and

the Pharisees is that they are hypocrites. In this passage, whilst Jesus

hates the scribes’ parading around and claiming honour that is not their

due, what really sees him condemn them is their mistreatment of wid-

ows ‘while making a show of lengthy prayers’. We cannot praise God in

prayer while at the same time mistreating our neighbour. That is hypoc-

risy! Our actions are an extension of our prayer. We cannot celebrate

the Eucharist on Sundays and fail to live it the rest of the week!

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

R. Praise the Lord, my soul!

It is the Lord who keeps faith for ever, who is just to those who are oppressed. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. R.

It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who loves the just, the Lord, who protects the stranger. R.

The Lord upholds the widow and orphan but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age. R.

SECOND READING Hebrews 9:24-28

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews

It is not as though Christ had entered a man-made sanctuary which was only modelled on the real one; but it was heaven itself, so that he could appear in the actual presence of God on our behalf. And he does not have to offer himself again and again, like the high priest going into the sanctuary year after year with the blood that is not his own, or else he would have had to suffer over and over again since the world began. Instead of that, he has made his appearance once and for all, now at the end of the last age, to do away with sin by sacrificing himself. Since men only die once, and after that comes judgement, so Christ, too, offers himself only once to take the faults of many on himself, and when he appears a second time, it will not be to deal with sin but to reward with salvation those who are waiting for him.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Let my prayer come into your pres-ence. Incline your ear to my cry for help, O Lord.

FIRST READING 1 Kings 17:10-16

A reading from the first book of the Kings

Elijah the Prophet went off to Si-don. And when he reached the city gate, there was a widow gathering sticks; addressing her he said, 'Please bring a little water in a ves-sel for me to drink.' She was set-ting off to bring it when he called after her. 'Please' he said 'bring me a scrap of bread in your hand.' 'As the Lord your God lives,' she replied 'I have no baked bread, but only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jug; I am just gather-ing a stick or two to go and pre-pare this for myself and my son to eat, and then we shall die.' But Eli-jah said to her, 'Do not be afraid, go and do as you have said; but first make a little scone of it for me and bring it to me, and then make some for yourself and for your son. For thus the Lord speaks, the God of Israel:

"Jar of meal shall not be spent, jug of oil shall not be emptied, before the day when the Lord sends rain on the face of the earth."'

The woman went and did as Elijah told her and they ate the food, she, himself and her son. The jar of meal was not spent nor the jug of oil emptied, just as the Lord had foretold through Elijah.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, alleluia! Happy the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs. Alleluia!

GOSPEL Mark 12:38-44

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

In his teaching Jesus said, 'Beware of the scribes who like to walk about in long robes, to be greeted obsequiously in the mar-ket squares, to take the front seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets; these are the men who swallow the property of widows, while making a show of lengthy pray-ers. The more severe will be the sentence they receive.'

He sat down opposite the treas-ury and watched the people put-ting money into the treasury, and many of the rich put in a great deal. A poor widow came and put in two small coins, the equivalent of a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, 'I tell you solemnly, this poor widow has put more in than all who have contributed to the treasury; for they have all put in money they had over, but she from the little she had has put in every-thing she possessed, all she had to live on.'

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"The converted person sees, hears and understands with a divine

eye, a divine ear, a divine heart. The converted person knows

himself or herself and all the world in God. The converted person

is where God is, and from that place everything matters: giving

water, clothing the naked, working for a new world order, saying

a prayer, smiling at a child, reading a book, and sleeping in

peace."

PARISH NEWS

November Mass Offerings

Please note that names of those who are sick will be published in the bulletin for two weeks only unless the Parish Office is notified the person is still unwell.

SACRED SILENCE, as part of the celebration, is to be observed at the designated times. Its nature, however, depends on the moment when it occurs in the different parts of the cele-bration.

For in the Penitential Act and again after the invitation to pray, individuals recollect themselves;

Whereas after a reading or after the homily, all meditate briefly on what they have heard;

Then after Communion, they praise God in their hearts and pray to him.

Even before the celebration itself, it is a praiseworthy practice for silence to be observed … so that all may dispose themselves to carry out the sacred celebration in a devout and fitting manner. GIRM 45

ALL MASSES will be offered through-

out the month of November for all our

loved ones mentioned in the Remem-

brance Scroll. If you wish to have the

ber at the 9:00am Mass, family members

are invited to light a candle for their

deceased loved ones which will be

morning tea will follow. Please bring a

plate to share.

Eternal rest grant unto

them, O Lord, and may

Saint of the Week

St Josaphat

12 November

Born at Vladimir of a wealthy merchant family, he was educated locally and was appren-

ticed to a merchant in Vilna. In 1604 he became a monk there and was soon ordained

priest. He was famous as a popular preacher in the cause of extending the union with

Rome of the province of Kiev, which had taken place in 1595. In 1614 he became abbot

of Vilna; soon afterwards he took part in an abortive attempt to reform the large but

relaxed monastery of The Caves at Kiev.

In 1617 he became archbishop of Polotsk. In a few years he had reduced the ecclesias-

tical power of local landowners, had held synods and published catechisms and he had

distinguished himself by his tireless pastoral activity. But in

1620 a rival hierarchy was set up and Josaphat had the added

problem of widespread schism to contend with. In the complex

situation of conflicting interests, affected by nationalism, long-

standing custom, and Eastern dislike of Rome, Josaphat stood

firm as the proponent of union with Rome but at the same time

maintained the right of Byzantine Clergy, with their local cus-

toms, to equal consideration with those of Rome. Tragically

suffering misrepresentation by both sides, Josaphat was even-

tually the victim of a murder-plot instigated by the violent and

uncontrolled supporters of his rival to the see of Polotsk. He

clearly foresaw his own death through violence; in response to

his plea that his servants should not suffer he was stunned by a halberd and shot. He

was canonized in 1867 and could well be considered as a patron in spite of different his-

torical circumstances of ecumenical endeavour today.
