The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. — Psalm 23:1

Samuel asks for David saying, “Send for him.” Upon David’s arrival he is anointed to be the King of Israel. Similarly, Jesus spits on the ground and makes clay and then anoints the man born blind. He then tells the man to go wash in the pool of Siloam, which means Sent. Thus, Jesus anoints and sends the blind man to be his disciple to those he encounters. We are all also anointed at our Baptism and again at our Confirmation, and sent through this anointing to be priest, prophet, and king, just as Samuel, David, Jesus, and the blind man are sent to proclaim God to the world. We will encounter challenges to doing God’s work, temptations, others questioning, and societal norms. Yet, we must set these aside and move forward anyways. How are you living out your calling to be priest, prophet, and king? How are you doing God’s work in our community and world?

In the entire Bible from Genesis in the Old Testament through the Gospel of John, the incident reported in John 9, the Gospel Reading on this Fourth Sunday of Lent, the restoration of sight to the blind man is the only instance of a blind person since birth being healed. No other prophet or apostle or priest ever performed such a miracle.

Isaiah the prophet had predicted “The eyes of blind will be opened” (Isaiah 35:5) in his prophecies of the Messiah. Of course, we need to understand that the “eyes of the blind will be opened” has a double meaning. Yes, the blind man can see, but he can also understand and comprehend what Jesus’ saving grace means.

This time during Lent is a time for us to open our eyes as well. We need to see and to embrace the fact that Jesus is our Savior and Redeemer. To see we need light. In the Second Reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, Paul says, “Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.”

Is that not what our whole purpose in Lent is? To seek the light; to find an understanding of the Lord’s place in our lives; to open our eyes; and to become Disciples of the Lord? We often make reference to the fact that we are called to be disciples. What does that mean? According to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, it meant, “Do not keep Christ to yourselves. Share with others the joy of your faith. The world needs the witness of your faith; it surely needs God.”

DOCENT CORNER

St. Joseph Connection

Since it is close to St. Joseph’s feast day (19 March), it is interesting to note that the California Missions have a very interesting relationship with St. Joseph. He apparently played a spiritual role in the success of the early expedition.

The Inspector General of New Spain, Jose de Gálvez, placed the Portolá expedition of 1769 for the establishment of the missions and the colonization of Alta California under the patronage of St. Joseph (San Jose). This saint had been the provider of all the temporal needs of Jesus and Mary and for their protection. Gálvez found it appropriate that St. Joseph be the patron saint of all the missions.

In March of 1770, supplies at San Diego for the Portolá expedition were stretched to the limit. The San Jose and San Antonio were overdue with much needed provisions. Captain Portolá decided that since the ships with the promised supplies had not yet arrived and the camp was almost entirely out of food, that he would abandon the expedition and return immediately to Lower California. Fr. Serra was strongly against this move and he pleaded and begged Portolá to reconsider. The governor stood firm but Serra also had a strong will. In his letter to Fr. Paloú in the Lower California Missions he said, "... I shall remain alone with Father Juan Crespí and hold out to the last breath."

Faced with a showdown, Portolá consented to wait while a novena (a 9 day devotional exercise) was made by Fr. Serra to St. Joseph, the holy patron of the expedition. On the 9th and last day of the novena, as the sun was setting on 19 March (St. Joseph’s Day), a ship was spotted far out to sea, heading north. It was the San Antonio. St. Joseph had answered their prayers and the expedition was saved. Re-supplied, the expedition sailed for Monterey in April.

In 1797, the Mission of San José was founded by Fr. Lasuén in honor of Saint Joseph. This was the 14th mission.

This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

New Book Club Selection The Carmel Mission Book Club has selected its next reading, Word on Fire by Bishop Robert Barron. Bishop Barron is one of

today’s premier spiritual writers. This book has been called a “lively presentation of …. music, painting, poetry, philosophy, and saints’ lives to illustrate the biblical message.”

The book club meets Saturdays, at 2pm in Mac Mahon Center

for refreshments and discussion. The meeting and book are free of charge;

small donations are requested to help defray the cost of the book and shipping. Interested?

Come to a meeting or call Deacon Bill at 646-0358.

“Milagros”

Milagros are small metal religious charms found in many areas of Latin America. The word “Milagros” means “miracles. These small charms, often depicting arms, legs, praying people, animals and a wide range of other subjects are typically nailed to crosses or wooden statues. People use of Milagros is connected with an institution known as “mandi”. This is where a person will ask for a favor to a Saint. A heart might represent ideas as diverse as a heart condition, a romance, or any number of interpretations. Milagros are also carried for protection and good luck.
