Theology on Tap!
Whatever Happened to Purgatory?
Theology on Tap offers fellowship and discussions about topics important in our lives today, with inter-esting speakers guiding the conversation, while en-joying your favorite beverages and snacks.
The next meeting will be
Wednesday, July 27th, 7:00 PM London Bridge Pub, 256 Figueroa Street (at the
foot of Wharf 2), Monterey
Our speaker this month is our own Dick Gorman. He will lead a discussion on the theology and history behind our concept of Purgatory from early Church thought to today. Purgatory is perhaps the least un-derstood teaching on the afterlife (Heaven and Hell get all the press), but is an important part of our Church. Here’s a chance to learn more about it!
Come join the discussion while enjoying great food, drinks, and friends!
Join Monterey Theology on Tap on Facebook! You can also send questions to Deacon Warren Hoy at [email protected]. We hope to see you there!

Faith Formation Volunteers Are you interested in sharing your faith with the next generation? Do you have fond memories of learning about the faith as a kid? Do you want to learn more about your own faith? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you may be a great fit to help with the faith formation pro-gram. You can choose your level of commitment and roles that will suite your gifts and talents. Grades K-8 meet Sundays from 10:30-11:30 am Grades 9-12 (Confirmation Program) meet Sundays 12:45-3:30pm If you are interested or have questions contact: Christian Cahill at [email protected] or 831-624-1271 x218.
We are in need of Eucharistic Ministers and Hospitality Ministers/Ushers at all of our Masses. Eucharistic Ministers serve communion during Mass. This is a wonderful opportunity to un-derstand the Eucharist on a different level. It is about recognizing Christ in the Eucharist, in those coming forward to receive Eucharist, and in ourselves giving the Eucharist. We all have an opportunity to be and to receive Christ and what better way to serve the community? Hospitality Ministers, also known as ushers, are the welcoming presence as people are arriv-ing and leaving. They also take care of the collections and make sure that people are seated and attend to any unexpected needs during Mass. We are particularly looking for people that have first aid/CPR training (not a requirement though). As Jesus said, “what you do for the least of these you do for me.” We are welcoming Jesus in all those who come in our doors. Families are encouraged to sign up together for this and get their kids involved in helping at church. If you are interested in either of these ministries please contact: Christian Cahill at [email protected] or 831-624-1271 x218.

“Go and do likewise.” Can there be a more simple instruction from our Lord and Savior Jesus? With these words, He closes the Parable of the Good Sa-maritan, which is at the heart of our Gospel reading for today. That parable was inspired by the question, “Who is my neighbor?”
That parable may be the most familiar to people of faith, and even to those who are not Christians, for it represents what is expected of us as followers of Christ, but it also presents an expectation for every human person.
A simplified answer to the question “Who is my neighbor?” might be “Your neighbor is anyone you see or know who is in need.” It is much more than the person who lives in your neighborhood, or someone you may know at church or at the office. Equally telling is the response the questioner gave to Jesus when the Lord asked, after sharing the parable, “Which was the neighbor to the robber’s victim?” to which the lawyer re-sponded, “The one who treated him with mercy.”
Is it any wonder that Pope Francis has declared this a Year of Mercy? What he ex-pects of us is what Jesus expects from us. The Holy Father says, “Let us become agents of Christ’s mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation, and make justice and peace flourish.” That is a call to stewardship.

Summer Solstice Illumination of the Tabernacle
Did you know the Carmel Mission Basilica is laid out in such a way that at sunrise on the Summer Sol-stice the sun shines directly on the tabernacle and the altar? The Franciscan fathers who designed the Mission wanted to show God’s grace in a powerful way, so they oriented the star window in the east façade to allow the sun’s rays to illuminate the tabernacle as the sun rises over the hills. With the new day, God’s light seems to shine forth from the tabernacle itself. Many parishioners were on hand to contemplate the light of Christ brightening his Church. It was a beautiful morning!

Serra Pilgrimage 2016 Thanks to All Who Helped Celebrate St. Junipero’s First Feast Day
More than 150 pilgrims walked the five-mile trail from San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey to Carmel Mission on Friday, June 1st, to celebrate the first feast day of St. Junipero since his canonization last September. The pilgrims were met at the Mission by a crowd of parishioners and staff, and celebrated Mass with Bishop Richard Garcia in the Basilica. The event was a beautiful way to mark the feast of our own St. Junipero. Thanks to everyone who worked the make this pilgrimage and special Mass possible!

Project Update: Mission Quadrangle Courtyard Restoration
Come out and see the progress we have made so far!
Current renovations in the Mission Quadrangle Courtyard have just turned the corner on our last full month of construction. We are excited to share that construction should be completed by early August, just in time to celebrate the end of summer! As a reminder a special viewing platform is open to the public which also offers an exhibit dedicated to the Carmel Mission Basilica Parish’s long “Legacy of Renewal”. This exhibit offers rare historical photo-graphs and renderings of The Old Mission. Don’t miss your change to watch history being made!
