June 23, 2020 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ: In these recent days, several pastors of our Mission parishes have repositioned some statues of St. Junípero Serra. This was done to protect them from possible desecration by violence. It is unclear exactly what groups are attacking these and other Serra statues throughout the state. Some indeed represent those with strong feelings regarding the treatment of indigenous peoples by European colonizers. The Church cannot support such violence imposed on any group, nor can it support the violent destruction of sacred symbols of any faith community. With regard to today, the Church stands with all the victims of our times. No greater spokesman can be found for the poor, the marginalized, the victimized immigrant, the victims of war, etc., than Pope Francis. We see such spirit in the work of Catholic Charities and Catholic Relief Services. Many Catholic theologians write and reflect on the ‘victims of history’ and the importance of ‘remembering’ their history and ‘giving voice’ to even the dead who are victims of injustice, and their narrative. We do so precisely through the lens of the memory of Jesus and his suffering and death. The theological reflections of our Church motivate us to work for human dignity, justice and charity for all peoples today – especially the victimized and marginalized. With regard to the times of St. Serra, it is important to state what an esteemed historian and scholar, Professor Robert Senkewicz stated: It is not legitimate to make Serra a stand-in for the entire 65 years of mission experience in California. In canonizing St. Serra, the Catholic Church did not intend to bless all that happened in the missions from their beginning to the end. Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI have reminded us that the saints are not people who have never made mistakes or sinned, but rather are people, even in their imperfect humanity, who allowed the Light of God to penetrate their hearts and shared it with others. After exhaustive investigation it is clear St. Serra made heroic sacrifices to protect the indigenous people of California from their Spanish conquerors and soldiers. He sacrificed a successful life in Spain to travel halfway around the world to live the rest of his life among people he had never seen but genuinely loved. He did this and endured many hardships expressly for purposes of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We feel scholarship in fact supports the Church’s views on Fr. Serra. In some Lenten sermons, Serra indicated his preferred missionary strategy quoting Psalm 33: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” This was his goal. During these troubled times let us be beacons of the goodness of God, like Fr. Serra, and bring Light where there is often darkness. In Christ,

Scripture MessageReadings for the Week

Today’s Readings

Jesus has some difficult words for His followers in the Gospel today. “Whoever loves father and mother more than me is not worthy of me.” This is somewhat startling from the same person who taught us when asked what is the greatest commandment, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31). The greatest commandment is to love, but if we love too much we are not worthy of Jesus? At the time when Jesus was with his disciples, the Church as we know and understand it did not exist. To many he was just a man roaming around, giving sermons and attracting followers. We imagine that some of the families of the original disciples supported their decision to follow Jesus, perhaps became believers themselves. We can imagine too that some family members wanted them to stay home, not follow Jesus around the countryside having abandoned their livelihoods, returning who knows when. Jesus does not tell the disciples (and us) that they must stop loving their families, they simply had to love Jesus more. God in the person of Jesus must be the center of our lives, the greatest love of our life, surpassed by no one and nothing. In another paradox, to follow Jesus, the Lord of light and life, we must pick up our cross, a symbol of suffering and humiliation. Jesus transforms the symbol of the cross by embracing His own suffering and death with the immense love He has for all humankind, for all of us. He make the cross no longer a cause for sorrow, but a cause for joy. Suffering becomes an expression of great love and death becomes new life in Jesus when we are willing to pick up our cross and follow in His footsteps. How do you pick up your cross and follow Jesus? Encouraged by His example, how can you do so with more joy even in the face of suffering?

I hope that you and your loved ones are well.Each year at this time, parishes throughout the Diocese of Monterey are launching the Annual Ministries Appeal. By our participation in this appeal, we assist so many people to grow in faith.In this AMA campaign letter we will provide you with some idea of the huge variety of diocesan ministries that benefit as a result of your generous support of this appeal.Since I was appointed Pastor at our beautiful Mission, your support has seen us go from strength to strength. Last year, our Renew A Pew Campaign had more donors contribute than any other parish in our diocese. We also raised the largest amount and were able to renew our pews for the next generation. I hope that you find them comfortable.The first $50,000.00 raised goes to our diocese and any sum over that amount comes back to our Mission.This year our parish campaign is called: Heavenly Sounds, and has as its objective, the enhancement of the sound in our Basilica.We probably have the best music in the Diocese of Monterey. Our wonderful Choir, Cantors, and musicians add so much to our liturgies and help us raise our minds and hearts to God. We also have music events throughout the year, the Bach Festival being a prime example. It is our intention to develop our music ministry and to add to our musical calendar.A major component of our music at the Mission is our wonderful Casavant organ. This beautiful instrument adds so much to our many liturgies. The time has come when our Casavant organ requires immediate attention, if we are to continue to use it. A portion of our Heavenly Sounds Campaign will be used to replace all the electrical and computer components, which are totally out of date. We will be providing you with more detailed information soon.I know that once again I can rely on your generous support, so that we at Carmel Mission can continue to create those Heavenly Sounds.

Paul’s Daily Prayers for your enjoyment.

Daily Prayers

Heavenly Father,

Today we ask You to bless our earthly fathers for the many times they reflected the love, strength, generosity, wisdom and mercy that You exemplify in Your relationship with us, Your children.

We honor our fathers for putting our needs above their own convenience and comfort; for teaching us to show courage and determination in the face of adversity; for challenging us to move beyond self-limiting boundaries; for modeling the qualities that would turn us into responsible, principled, caring adults.

Not all our fathers lived up to these ideals. Give them the grace to acknowledge and learn from their mistakes. Give us the grace to extend to them the same forgiveness that you offer us all. Help us to resist the urge to stay stuck in past bitterness, instead, moving forward with humility and peace of heart.

We ask your blessing on those men who served as father figures in our lives when our biological fathers weren't able to do so. May the love and selflessness they showed us be returned to them in all their relationships, and help them to know that their influence has changed us for the better.

Give new and future fathers the guidance they need to raise happy and holy children, grounded in a love for God and other people - and remind these fathers that treating their wives with dignity, compassion and respect is one of the greatest gifts they can give their children.

We pray that our fathers who have passed into the next life have been welcomed into Your loving embrace, and that our family will one be day be reunited in your heavenly kingdom.

In union with St. Joseph, whom you entrusted with Your Son, we ask Your generous blessings today and every day.

And I remember the musician Faltering over his fiddle In Bayswater, London. He too set me the riddle. Every old man I see In October-coloured weather Seems to say to me "I was once your father."

To pull the metal splinter from my palm my father recited a story in a low voice. I watched his lovely face and not the blade. Before the story ended, he’d removed the iron sliver I thought I’d die from.I can’t remember the tale, but hear his voice still, a well of dark water, a prayer. And I recall his hands, two measures of tenderness he laid against my face, the flames of discipline he raised above my head.Had you entered that afternoon you would have thought you saw a man planting something in a boy’s palm, a silver tear, a tiny flame. Had you followed that boy you would have arrived here, where I bend over my wife’s right hand.Look how I shave her thumbnail down so carefully she feels no pain. Watch as I lift the splinter out. I was seven when my father took my hand like this, and I did not hold that shard between my fingers and think, Metal that will bury me, christen it Little Assassin, Ore Going Deep for My Heart. And I did not lift up my wound and cry, Death visited here! I did what a child does when he’s given something to keep. I kissed my father.

Between the years of 1793 and 1797, the Old Stone Basilica Church of the Carmel Mission was designed and constructed by Manuel Ruiz and his brother, master mason Santiago Ruiz of San Blas, Mexico. They built our missionary church according to mandated construction practices of the era that were formed to express liturgical meaning throughout the sacred space of the Mission Church.The iconic Star of Bethlehem window and the façade of the old church reflect this liturgical expression in that they are orientated in such a way that it creates a stunning solar alignment to the Mission Basilica Church every year. In the weeks before and after the period anchored to the summer solstice, a wondrous illumination of the Mission sanctuary can be witnessed. In these many days, weather permitting, the morning sunlight processes over the hills of Jack's Peak and floods the church's window and doorway with concentrated sunlight.This unique architectural display and use of natural light was a mandated liturgical practice, as seen in the writings of Saint Charles Borromeo’s the patron saint of the Carmel Mission. Older Churches throughout the world, here in California and as far away as the Philippines have similar illuminations that can be witnessed differing times of the year depending on the orientation of those churches.

The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5)

The understanding of how to create this amazing display of light has been practiced since ancient times throughout the world. The Carmel Mission Basilica was constructed to be oriented on a 60-degree azimuth (East North East). This puts the alignment of the church in sync with the sun when it is at its greatest distance north from the celestial equator and marks the longest day of the year in our region of the world. This year the date of the summer solstice is Saturday, June 20. The Illuminations of the Mission sanctuary create a deeper liturgical meaning when we consider the feast days following the Easter season. This includes the Ascension of Christ, Pentecost, and Corpus Christi. Additionally, we know from tradition and historical writings of the Mission Franciscan Friars, that the statue image of Our Lady of Bethlehem with Christ as a child was originally centered in the sanctuary above the altar and tabernacle — signifying the birth of Christ and Mary’s importance to the Faith. Witnessed from this perspective the illumination of Mission sanctuary, through the mediums of art and architecture, perfectly illuminates the life, ministry, resurrection, and salvation offered by the Light of Christ.
