First Sunday de ADVENT
Vigilant attitude between waiting and hope: here is the core point of the liturgical readings. The Gospel repeats three times: "Watch, be alert, watch", because you do not know when the time will come, when the owner of the house will arrive. In the first letter to the Corinthians, Paul speaks of waiting for the man-ifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who "will keep you firm until the end." The beautiful invocation to God of the third Isaiah ex-presses the desire that the Lord breaks into his power in history, as if it were a new Exodus, remembering that "You, Lord, are our father". The day of the Lord. In Advent the tradition of the Church has united two comings: that of the Word in the weakness of the flesh, which we will celebrate on Christmas day, and that of the Lord in the majesty of his glory, which belongs, in terms of time and way of being realized, to the kingdom of the mystery hidden in the heart of the Father. Between them runs a thread of continu-ity: the historical coming of Jesus preannounces and anticipates in some way his final coming, at the end of the story; who goes out with joy to meet Jesus of Nazareth in the mystery of his birth, has no reason to fear or despair of the final encounter with the glorious Christ, Lord of the universe and of history. For the faithful Christian, the day of the Lord does not have to be cov-ered with terrifying scenes, gripping fears, horrible paralyzing ghosts, dazzling apocalyptic visions. With Saint Paul, the Chris-tian is sure that "the Lord will keep you firm until the end, so that no one has to accuse you in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ" (second reading). The day of the Lord demands the Christian, and every human being, the responsibility facing the infinite mystery of incarnation and redemption. Vigilance! Christmas is coming. In our society we run the risk of "having a good time" Christmas, as summer holidays or a nation-al holiday go well. That is, maybe we go to the midnight mass, because "tradition obliges", we decorate our house with a small tree with lights and a nativity scene, we celebrate family with a sumptuous feast, we see on television some program related to the holidays, we make beautiful gifts for our friends and loved ones, we rekindle the family ties around the home ... all of them, good things! But the substance of Christmas, the most sublime mystery in history: God among us, Emmanuel, escapes us like water between the fingers of our hands or dilutes like smoke in our superficial mind and little inclined to serious meditation, the things that really are worth it. Today the liturgy tells us: Be at-tentive! Be careful not to lose the opportunity to meditate on something important, to properly assess the mystery that we are going to celebrate. Vigilance! You are a sinner We do not know the day or the hour in which the Lord will come to the end of history, but we do know his historical coming. Will we commit the criminal bold-ness of living unconcerned, on the harmful salary of a hopeless sinner, completely alienated from the divine Child of Bethlehem and the Lord of glory? We are sinners. We have in us the attach-ment to sin. We can not stop watching for the arrival of the Lord to find us ready, dressed in a wedding dress. We are sinners: Christmas reminds us that the Son of God has become man to redeem man from sin. Let's remember! Let's watch! That the historical coming of God among men rekindles our conscience of sinners and our need for salvation. Christmas is not just time for feelings of tenderness, of intimacy, of celebration; it is also to awaken from our lethargy our conscience and "make God be born" in our hearts.

Primer Domingo de ADVIENTO
Actitud vigilante entre la espera y la esperanza: aquí está el punto nuclear de las lecturas litúrgicas. El evangelio repite por tres ve-ces: "vigilad, estad alerta, velad", porque no sabéis cuándo llega-rá el momento, cuándo llegará el dueño de la casa. En la primera carta a los corintios, Pablo habla de esperar la manifestación de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que "os mantendrá firmes hasta el fin". La bellísima invocación a Dios del tercer Isaías expresa el deseo de que el Señor irrumpa con su poder en la historia, como si se tratase de un nuevo Éxodo, recordando que "Tú, Señor, eres nuestro padre".
El día del Señor. En el adviento la tradición de la Iglesia ha unido dos venidas: la del Verbo en la debilidad de la carne, que celebra-remos el día de Navidad, y la del Señor en la majestad de su glo-ria, que pertenece, en cuanto al tiempo y al modo de realizarse, al reino del misterio escondido en el corazón del Padre. Entre am-bas corre un hilo de continuidad: la venida histórica de Jesús preanuncia y anticipa en cierto modo su venida última, al final de la historia; quien sale con gozo al encuentro de Jesús de Nazaret en el misterio de su nacimiento, no tiene motivo para temer o desesperar del encuentro postremo y definitivo con el Cristo glo-rioso, Señor del universo y de la historia. Para el fiel cristiano, el día del Señor no tiene por qué estar revestido de escenas terrifi-cantes, de miedos atenazadores, de horribles fantasmas paralizan-tes, de visiones apocalípticas deslumbrantes. Con san Pablo, el cristiano está seguro de que "el Señor os mantendrá firmes hasta el fin, para que nadie tenga de qué acusaros en el día de nuestro Señor Jesucristo" (segunda lectura). El día del Señor reclama al cristiano, y a todo ser humano, a la responsabilidad de cara al misterio infinito de la encarnación y de la redención.
¡Vigilancia! Llega la Navidad. En nuestra sociedad corremos el peligro de "pasar bien" la Navidad, como se pasan bien las vaca-ciones estivas o un día de fiesta nacional. Es decir, vamos quizá a la misa de gallo, porque "tradición obliga", adornamos nuestra casa con un arbolito de luces y un belén, festejamos en familia con un banquete opíparo, vemos en televisión algún programa relativo a las fiestas navideñas, hacemos hermosos regalos a nuestros amigos y seres queridos, reavivamos los lazos familiares en torno al hogar...¡todas ellas, cosas buenas! Pero la sustancia de la Navidad, el misterio más sublime de la historia: Dios entre nosotros, Emanuel, se nos escapa como agua entre los dedos de las manos o se diluye como el humo en nuestra mente superficial y poco propensa a la meditación seria de las cosas que realmente valen la pena. Hoy la liturgia nos dice: ¡Atentos! Vigilad para no perder la ocasión de meditar en algo importante, de valorar debi-damente el misterio que vamos a celebrar.
¡Vigilancia! Eres pecador. No sabemos ni el día ni la hora en que vendrá el Señor al término de la historia, pero sí conocemos su venida histórica. ¿Cometeremos la criminal osadía de vivir des-preocupados, a sueldo dañoso de pecador empedernido, ajenos del todo al Niño divino de Belén y al Señor de la gloria? Somos pecadores. Llevamos en nosotros la querencia al pecado. No po-demos dejar de vigilar para que la llegada del Señor nos encuen-tre preparados, engalanados con el vestido de boda. Somos peca-dores: la Navidad nos recuerda que el Hijo de Dios se ha hecho hombre para redimir al hombre del pecado. ¡Recordemos! ¡Vigilemos! Que la venida histórica de Dios entre los hombres reavive nuestra conciencia de pecadores y nuestra necesidad de salvación. La Navidad no es sólo tiempo para sentimientos de ternura, de intimidad, de fiesta; lo es también para despertar del letargo nuestra conciencia y "hacer nacer a Dios" en nuestro co-razón.
