Eachstudentwillprepare:

Studentsinthefirstinstancewillstudytheirimmediateenvironmentandlearnabouteverydaycraftsintheireverydaylives.Theywillprepareanassignmentofcraftsfoundathome,intheirtown/village,

artisansandcraftscommunitieswholiveintheirlocality.

The teachersmaydiscuss theareasand topics relatedwith the topicsmentioned in the followingparagraph,beforestartingtheworkandtheymaycallacraftspersonorsomeonefromthecommunitywhofeelscomfortabletalkingtothechildrenandatthesametimeiswellversedwiththecrafttraditionsspeciallyofthatregion.Studentsmaytalktopeoplebothproducersandconsumers,findoutaboutdifferentaspectsofproductionandmarketingorstudythearchitectureofmonuments,visitmuseums,studytheartifacts(sculptureandpaintingandcrafts)andworkonthecostumes,jewelry,thewayoflifeetc.Theassignmentscanhavedrawings,illustrations,photographs,mapsetc.Thestudentsmaychooseanytwotopicsfromfollowingareasforthisshortproject:

• Crafts in their own locality/home/statetoenablestudentstounderstandthedesignandfunctionofcrafttraditionsintheirdailylife.

• Local Heritage in Museum/ monuments/ religious‐secular structurestounderstandthevariouscraftskillsinvolvedinhistoricarchitecture/building/sculpture/painting.

• Vernacular architecture to study the variety of craft skills in contemporary building of homes, and other structures.

• Market/ shop/ mela/ haat to understand market forces.

Note: Teacher to assess the two assignment out of 05 marks each and take the best out of the two for final assessment.

Thisprojectwillnecessarilybeascientific,methodicaldocumentationofaparticularcrafttraditionprevalentintheregion(forthefirstyearthatisclassXI),whichwillhavethefollowingcoreissuesinthebackground,whichthestudentshavealsostudiedintheory;

‐ Craft Traditions ‐ Philosophy and Aesthetics ‐ Materials, Processes and Techniques ‐ Environment & Resource Management ‐ Social Structures ‐ Economy and marketing ‐ International Examples

Theprojectstakenupforthissubjectmayhavedifferentstagesofplanning,executionandpresentation.Theprojectsmaybetakenupinagroupof4to6studentswheretheycanworkonaparticularcrafttradition.InclassXIstudentsmayvisitthecrafts-personsintheirownregionwhereasinclassXIIstudentsmaytakeupcraftsclustersofanotherregioniftheschoolsandthestudentsfinditconvenient.

In thepreparatory stage, studentsalongwith teachers candiscussaboutvarious crafts traditionspracticedintheregion,theirhistory,distributionetc.,collectallinformationavailablethroughvarioussourcesincludinglibrary,internetandresourcepersons.Toavailcomprehensivedataonvariousaspectsofthecrafts,studentsmaydevelopaninterviewscheduleanddecideonnumberofcraftspersonstobeinterviewed,whichallplacestheywillbevisitingetc.Teachersmustequipthestudentsoninteractionwithcraftspersonsandotherpeoplefromthecommunity,typeoflanguagetheyshoulduse,howtobepolitewiththemandwhilehandlingtheirmaterialsetc.Studentscanbuysomeoftheobjectsfromcraftspersons,takephotographsfilmsafterseekingtheirpermission,makedrawings,etc.whichlaterontheycanuseinpresentationorsubmissionofprojectreport.

Afterthecompletionofdocumentation,studentscouldmakepresentationatschoolassemblyortheclassorinparent-teachers'meetingforwhichtheycancreativelyuse.

APPLIED CRAFTS 20 marks

This componentwill consistof a-hands-on-experienceof creativeworkwithamulti-disciplinaryapproach:

1. Learning a Craft 10 marks

Studentscanlearnthebasicsofachosencraftfromapracticinglocalartisan,suchaspottery/weaving/drawingandworkonitstechniques,handlingofmaterialsandtools,experimentwithcolour,form,texture,rhythm,balanceetc.Theycanthenexperimentwiththem,knowaboutthetraditionalpracticesinthatcraft,thesymbolisminthemandthedifferentpointsofviewsassociatedwithit.Theschoolsshouldhaveallthefacilitiesrequiredforpracticingalltheprocessesinvolvedinacraftincludingworkingspace,materialsandtools.Schoolsmaynothaveateacherwhoisalsoanexpertinallthesecraftsandinsuchacase,theschoolsshouldidentifyresourcepersons/craftspersonsfromthecommunity,whocancometotheschoolfordemonstrationsandstudentsalsocanvisitthem.

HelpcanbesoughtfromTRIFED,SPIC-MACY,CCRTandothersuchorganizationswhicharetryingtoretaintheculturalfabricofIndianSociety.

2. Innovation in design and processes 10 marks

Inthisstage,studentswilldeveloptheircreative,innovationskills.Theywillchoseonedevelopmenttopicandtranslatetheoryintopractice.

EgBasedontheinterestandregionalneeds,likestonecraftinpartsofM.P.,TamilNadu,Orissa,etc.wherestoneiseasilyavailable.

Finally it iscriticalthatstudentswhoundertakethiscoursehaveanopportunitytousewhatthey learn toenhance theirdaily life.Studentswillbeaskedtopracticallydemonstratehowtheywillcreateanaestheticenvironmentatschool,home,andcommunity.Theycanredesigntheirclassroomwithcraftstheyhavestudied;theycandesignanoticeboardfortheschool,ordecoratetheprincipal'soffice.Periodicallystudentscandisplayandorganizeexhibitionstoshowtheworksandobtainfeedback.Studentscanlearnhowtheirproductscanbecreativelyusedintheirlivesaswellascommunitymembers.

InthissubjectareaofIndianCrafts,therewillbethree textbooks for classes XI and class XII.Onetextbookeach inboth theyearswillbe for theory,andonebookgivingguidelines/addressing theschools,teachersandstudentsaboutthepracticalcomponents.

The theory textbooks for classesXIandXIIwillbea fully illustrated textbookgivingphotographs,sketches,maps,timelines,casestudiesetc.TheclassXItextbookoftheorywillintroducechildrenwithdiversetraditionsoftheIndiancrafts.Whereastheclass XIItextbookwilladdressthesixaspectsofCraftTraditions:a.PhilosophyandAesthetics,b.Materials,ProcessesandTechniques,c.Environment&ResourceManagementd.SocialStructuresf.Economyandmarketingg. InternationalExamples.TheseaspectswillbestudiedinlightofthecraftstraditionsreferredinclassXI.

Aworkbookwhichwillbeaddressingthestudentsaswellasteachersandschoolsforconductingdifferentactivitiesinpracticum,likethefieldstudiesandappliedcraftswillprovidesomesamplesofdocumentationmethods/formatsbasedonwhichchildrencandeveloptheirownformatstoconductthem.Thiswillbeabookforbothyears.Itwillalsosuggestwhatfacilitiestheschoolsshouldprovideforconductingtheseactivitiesetc.

2. ProjectWork:Oneprojectinayearwherestudentswillidentifyandpickupaparticulardesignproblemorsomethingthattheyconsideradesignproblem;workonthatproblemandproduceworks.Studentsshouldbeencouragedtotakeupproblemsfromtheirownenvironmentlike,annualday,sports,meet,function/festivals,schoolbuilding,signs,communicationintheschooletc.

3.
