Lent 2019-Companions on the Journey This Wednesday, we begin the Season of Lent. It is a special me in the Churchs Liturgical Year to journey with Jesus and one another into the desert of our minds and hearts, change what needs to be changed and rise with Him to New Life on Easter. This year we will be emphasizing the reality that we are Companions on the Journeyand together we can make a difference in the lives of others and our world. The Gospel story on Ash Wednesday is about Prayer, Fasng and Almsgiving which are oſten referred to as the three pillars of Lent. I know I have shared the following with you before but I again offer for your prayer and reflecon the following insight and un- derstanding of these pillars. Prayer is a way of life. It is a relaonship with our God and others. It is about living and experiencing relaonships that are healthy, faith-filled and growth-filled. Let us be a people of prayer and let our relaonships always reflect our love for God and others. Fasng has tradionally meant giving upsomething. It usually meant giving up junk food, different types of drinks, etc. During the past several years, fasng has progressed to something that embraces the heart and spirit of ones being. We are challenged to fast from atudes and values that prevent us from living the Gospel. What about fasng from complaining or gossiping? What about fasng from fear or closed minded- ness? What about fasng from judging or condemning others? I believe the following reflecon about Fasng is very insighul and pastoral. From Fasting to Feasting Fast from judging others; Feast on seeing the best in people. Fast from emphasis on difference; Feast on the unity of all life. Fast from despair; Feast on hope. Fast from thoughts of illness; Feast on the healing power of God. Fast from words that destroy; Feast on phrases that are encouraging. Fast from discontent; Feast on gratitude. Fast from anger; Feast on patience. Fast from being negative; Feast on being positive. Fast from worry; Feast on trust. Fast from complaining; Feast on appreciation. Fast from hostility; Feast on peacemaking. Fast from bitterness; Feast on Forgiveness. Fast from constant activity; Feast on slowing down. Fast from disrespect; Feast on recognizing the sacred in all of life. Fast from self-concern; Feast on compassion for others. Lent 2019-Companions on the Journey This Wednesday, we begin the Season of Lent. It is a special time in the Church’s Liturgical Year to journey with Jesus and one another into the desert of our minds and hearts, change what needs to be changed and rise with Him to New Life on Easter. This year we will be emphasizing the reality that we are “Companions on the Journey”

and together we can make a difference in the lives of others and our world.

The Gospel story on Ash Wednesday is about Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving which are often referred to as the three pillars of Lent. I know I have shared the following with you before but I again offer for your prayer and reflection the following insight and un-derstanding of these pillars.

Prayer is a way of life. It is a relationship with our God and others. It is about living and experiencing relationships that are healthy, faith-filled and growth-filled. Let us be a people of prayer and let our relationships always reflect our love for God and others.

Fasting has traditionally meant “giving up” something. It usually meant giving up junk food, different types of drinks, etc. During the past several years, fasting has progressed to something that embraces the heart and spirit of one’s being. We are challenged to fast from attitudes and values that prevent us from living the Gospel. What about fasting from complaining or gossiping? What about fasting from fear or closed minded-ness? What about fasting from judging or condemning others?

I believe the following reflection about Fasting is very insightful and pastoral.

(Continued on page 5)

Do You Know. . .

why ashes are an important symbol of the Lenten season?

The Bible contains many references to ashes. They represent sorrow and grief, destruction and repentance, judgment, mourning and despair. On the first day of Lent, they form the mark of a cross on the forehead of many believers as a symbol of cleansing from sin. As you wear the sign of the cross upon your forehead, remember that Lent is a time of new beginnings.

Welcome to the Family!

Inspiration for the Week

How quick are we to point out the faults of others? It is so easy to see what others are doing wrong and much harder to see ourselves for who we are. Many want to see them-selves as one of the privileged and the saved and are quick to condemn those who choose to do things differently. We can be so hypocritical while at the same time proclaiming to be so spiritual. What we speak reveals the true thoughts of our minds and intention of our hearts. We fool no one but ourselves. Rather than being defensive, critical, and exclu-sive, does it not make more sense to help each other and work together for the kingdom of God? We may have to leave something behind, but in turn, we'll gain much more.

As we journey along together, through this season of Lent, let’s take a moment to think of our neighbors who do not have the basic needs to sustain them and to keep them nourished. Our Almsgiving pro-gram at St. Louis goes hand in hand

with our St. Vincent de Paul groups daily efforts to ease the burden of the community. So let’s join the effort…

Let's stock the shelves of the St. Louis

St. Vincent de Paul Pantry.

Using the coupons in this article as reminders, head out for your weekly shopping trip. As you shop, think about the different kinds of fasting you could do for the next 40 days - one less app purchase per week, one less six pack or bottle of wine, one less dozen donuts, one less half-café mocha latte, one less trip to get fast food, one less pack of cigarettes, one less bag of chips, one less box of cookies and soon the fasting adds up.

Then purchase (or find in your own cupboard) one or more of the items listed for the upcoming weekend and bring it to one of the Liturgies. At offertory time, you will be asked to come for-ward and place your weekly offering and your non-perishable food items and/or products in the baskets, around the altar. Thank You !

Let us be a people of fasting who pro-claim the Gospel values of inclusivity, welcome and acceptance of all.

Almsgiving traditionally means the giving of funds and food for the poor and needy. We are already asking your help in this area by our weekly suggestions of items to “Stock our St. Vincent de Paul Pantry”. However, I suggest, in addition to our normal understanding of almsgiving, that we open our minds and hearts to doing a little more. I propose we also think of almsgiving as a means of giving our-selves to others. It could mean spend-ing more time with family and friends. It could mean visiting the sick or someone we haven’t seen in a while. It could mean trying to heal a broken relationship or bring someone a sense of self-assurance through our ability to listen and be present during a diffi-cult time in life. The reality of almsgiv-ing is that we are giving to others in a variety of ways. Let us always and in all ways be a people of almsgiving and thus proclaim that the presence of God is seen and felt in all that we do and say.

May we truly be Companions on the Journey this Lenten Season and to-gether let us Proclaim Christ’s Love and Mercy to all. The Little Black Books and Living Lent with Love Book-lets are available in both entrances of the Church. Shalom
