In the gospel, we meet three different individuals who seek to follow Christ; however, in each case Jesus rebukes them. Jesus criticizes their commitment to the Gospel.
The First man claims dedication by saying, “I will follow you wherever you go.” How often do we tell God or others that we will do what is right but then fulfill our own pleasure? We have a tendency to build fantasies about what it means to do divine work and to fulfill our destinies but we lack the fortitude to actually accomplish His tasks for us when it becomes diffi-cult.
The second man responds to Jesus’ call to follow him by wanting to bury his father, not because his father had died or was sick and going to die; but rather, the man did not want to follow Jesus right now. The Man wanted to do his own thing first or wait until the time when following Jesus was more con-venient. However, there is never a perfect time to follow the Creator’s design for us. If we are not willing to follow the Fa-ther’s invitation to fulfill our destiny now, there is no confidence that we will choose to follow the Lord later.
The last man asks to “say farewell to [his] family at home” first indicating a desire to look to his past before going with Christ. If we are not focused on what Christ lays before us pro-ceeding into the future, rather we are longing for what was; we are not able to fulfill God’s plan.
Discipleship is about putting Christ at the center of all things giving us the ability to live our lives according the Crea-tor’s divine plan. All of humanity is called to this divine truth and to walk now, in our life, the path of Christ.
Independence Day
On this coming Thursday, July 4th, our nation celebrates Independence. The declaration of Independence was a bold move by the colonies to stand up against the most powerful na-tion of that time for liberty. Today, the desperation that those men and women felt seems so far removed from the life of mod-ern society; however, the challenge has not changed. The basic premise of the declaration of independence is that “all men are created equal”. The authors clearly point out that by virtue of God’s power every human being has equal dignity regardless of status, wealth, power, race, sex, and age. This means that each person has a right to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happi-ness” unencumbered by those who represent the government. No public official or private citizen should gain preference or punishment if maintaining good living. Take some time this Independence celebration and read the “Declaration of Inde-pendence” or the “Constitution of the United States” and under-stand the importance of our nation to safeguard our right to have “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”.
Does our nation maintain just laws so that every person can pursue these rights? Do we ensure the unborn the right to live when supporting “Pro-choice” legislation? Do we ensure the right of liberty when supporting legislation banning smoking, large soft drinks, and incandescent light bulbs; or when legisla-tion forces individuals, companies, and institution to pay for health services which violates moral conscience? Do we ensure the pursuit of Happiness when we fund and support cultures, societies, and nations which oppress and restrict women and religion; where a young girl is shot in the head because she dared to advocate education for women? The challenges to free-dom have the same magnitude as they did on that first proclama-tion of Independence. Are you willing to stand for moral values of Freedom and justice as our Forefathers did now in our gener-ation?

El Primer hombre reclama dedicación diciendo: "Te seguiré dondequiera que vayas". ¿Con qué frecuencia le decimos a Dios u otras personas que haremos lo correcto pero luego cumplimos con nuestro propio placer? Tenemos una tendencia a construir fantasías sobre lo que significa hacer el trabajo divino y cumplir nuestros destinos, pero nos falta la fortaleza para cumplir sus tareas cuando se nos hace difícil. Mito numero cuatro:
Las bodas de la iglesia son demasiado caras. Así que nos casaremos civilmente y luego tendremos una gran boda en la iglesia cuando podamos pagarla. ¿Verdad? ¡Incorrecto!
En primer lugar, las ceremonias sacramentales de boda no son necesariamente caras. Pero tendemos a hacerlos caros. A Dios no le importa cuántas damas de honor tengas o sobre arreglos florales, pasteles de boda, limusi-nas y recepciones de bodas. Deacon Greg’s Seven Great Myths about the Sacrament of Matrimony & Divorce:
Hopefully, debunking these myths may help you or someone you know to better understand some of the Church’s guidelines about sacramental marriage.
This will be a series of myths from Deacon Greg in the next several bulletins.
Myth number four:
Church weddings are too expensive. So we’ll just get married civilly and then have a big church wedding later when we can afford it. Right? Wrong!
First of all, sacramental wedding ceremonies are not nec-essarily expensive. But we tend to make them expensive. God doesn’t care how many bridesmaids you have or about flower arrangements, wedding cakes, limousines, and wedding receptions. What God and the church com-munity care about is whether the couple wants to have Jesus Christ as a part of the marriage, whether they are willing to exchange their vows in a sacrament before a priest or deacon and two witnesses, whether they are ready to witness to God’s love in the world. A simple and beautiful chapel wedding here at Saint Stephen is cheap by any comparison. Check it out. Also, keep in mind that civil arrangements for marriage or Las Vegas “quickies” are not valid for Catholic people. Remember that treasure, the kingdom of heaven. The Sacrament of Marriage is part of that kingdom and is in fact a way to find the pearl of great price. Our church community cares about the spiritu-al welfare of couples who want to get married. There is a right way and a wrong way. We all need to choose the right way, God’s way.

First Holy Communion Certificates and photos are ready and will be passed out after all Sunday Masses today.
If they are not picked up the teachers will pass them out the following two weeks.
