The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has issued a sex offender notification for the SaddleBrooke area. Troy Austin Copeland, 47, has reported that he will be living in

Pinal County Sheriff’s Office sex offender notification released for SaddleBrooke area

the 38000 block of S. Mountain Site Dr., SaddleBrooke, in the unincorporated area of Pinal County. He is described as a white male who is six feet tall, weighs 190 pounds. He is bald and has green eyes. Copeland is listed as a level two sex offender. He was convicted in Florida in 2009 for possession of child pornography. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the above information pursuant to A.R.S. 13-3825, the Community Notification on Sex Offender Law. Notification must be made when certain sex offenders are released from the Arizona

State Prison, accepted under an interstate compact or released from the county jail back into the community. Offenders are categorized into three levels: Level One (low risk to the community), Level Two (intermediate risk to the community), and Level Three (high risk to the community). The individual who appears on this notification has been convicted of a sex offense, which allows for community notification. He is not wanted by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office at this time. This notification is not intended to increase fear; rather it is our belief that an informed community is a safer community. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has no legal authority to direct where a sex offender may or may not live. Unless court ordered restrictions exist, this offender is constitutionally free to live wherever he chooses. Citizen abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate, or harass sex offenders will not be tolerated. Sex offenders have always lived in our communities; but because of Megan’s Law, law enforcement is now able to share this information with you. Police caution that any use of this information to threaten, intimidate, harass or create an act against another person will result in prosecution.

Officer Cook was the school resource officer in Oracle in 1997 and also was a patrol officer in the San Manuel area. Officer Cook spoke to the high school students about alcohol awareness. He warned them about the dangers of driving impaired and also about the consequences if they are caught driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs as well as under age drinking. Convictions of these crimes could impact their lives for years. This was part of the Alcohol Awareness Program provided by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office to help students make correct choices and prevent alcohol related accidents.

Officials from the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition celebrated the kick off for the Rural Business Enterprise Grant (RBEG) that the organization received in partnership with the Northern Arizona Association of Governments. The two agencies will be partnering to develop Business Assistance Centers and Business Success Centers throughout rural Arizona.

Congressman Paul Gosar was in attendance at the event kick off and congratulated the groups on their success. “Use this grant as seeds for continued success,” he commented. The Copper Corridor EDC operates the Business Success Center which provides business training and consulting throughout the Copper Corridor. The NACOG model the Business Assistance Center uses

physical locations to offer services for small businesses. The RBEG grant was received through the United States Department of Agriculture. If you would like free business consultations or would like to learn how to start a business you can contact the CCEDC Business Success Center at 520-490-8433 or learn more online at www.coppercorridorbsc.org.

The Highway Patrol Division at the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) wants to remind motorists about the “Move Over Law”. The law states that motorists must move over when approaching ANY vehicle with its emergency lights on. If a motorist is unable to safely move over due to traffic, the motorist must then slow down before passing ALL vehicles displaying emergency lights. DPS Officers have been working extra hours in a campaign to enforce Arizona’s “Move Over” law and other laws designed to reduce accidents caused by motorists not moving over. “This is an effort to educate the motoring public about the ‘Move Over’ law and other important laws that promote traffic safety. Our effort centers on both an enforcement aspect and an education component,” said DPS Capt. Pete Borquez. Nationally, one tow truck driver is killed every six days on the side of the road. Also, twenty-three highway workers and one police officer are killed every month along the side of the road. DPS will continue to aggressively enforce the “Mover Over” law and other traffic safety laws in order to save lives along Arizona highways. DPS reminds everyone to drive with due regard for fellow motorists while carefully observing all traffic laws.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is set to begin a construction project this month to replace the Aravaipa Creek Bridge on State Route 77, which is located about 15 miles north of Mammoth (milepost 123-124). The project includes removal of the existing structure and replacing it with a new concrete bridge. In addition, the project includes installing new guardrails and widening SR 77 to align with the new bridge. The bridge will be replaced in two separate construction phases over the next year. Initially in phase I, the northbound lane on the bridge will be closed to traffic

while the southbound bridge structure is constructed. Then in phase II, work will take place on the northbound bridge with traffic using the new bridge. Each phase will last about six months with the project anticipated to be completed in spring 2015. During construction there will be one lane in use and temporary traffic signals will be at each end of the bridge to alternate northbound and southbound traffic across the bridge. For more information call ADOT’s project information line at 1.855.712.8530 or email at [email protected].

PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – Central Arizona College Aravaipa Campus student Lorena Villanueva (San Manuel/San Manuel HS) is one of 20 two-year college students nationwide that have been named to the 24th annual All-USA Community College Academic Team. The award honors Villanueva for her outstanding intellectual achievement and leadership, and she will receive a $2,500 scholarship, furnished by Follett Higher Education Group. An active volunteer in kindergarten classrooms in the town of Oracle, Villanueva was originally selected to the All-Arizona Academic First Team, boasting a 3.81 grade point average as a biology major. The native of San Manuel is involved in CAC’s Student Leadership Organization and is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa. In the spring of 2013, she earned recognition as the Aravaipa Campus’s Most Outstanding Student for the 2012-2013 academic year.A graduate of San Manuel High School, Villanueva plans to transfer to the University of Arizona with the intention of becoming an occupational therapist. “We are truly proud of Lorena for receiving this very prestigious award,” said CAC President Dr. Doris Helmich. “It

is our belief that Central Arizona College produces some of the best scholars and leaders in the state and in the nation. All of Lorena’s hard work obviously has put her in that category.” The All-USA program is widely recognized as the most prestigious academic honor for students attending community college. Nominees are hand-selected by colleges for showing intellectual rigor and for demonstrating academic, leadership and civic growth. The program also recognizes students who extend their community college education to better themselves, their schools and their surrounding communities. “As college costs continue to climb, community college becomes a vital channel to access the baccalaureate degree,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s Executive Director and CEO Dr. Rod Risley. “Programs like these promote college completion by providing opportunities and raising awareness of the need.” The 2014 All-USA Community College Academic Team is sponsored by Follett Higher Education Group and presented by USA TODAY. Additional support is provided by Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges.

“Community colleges provide students a high quality, affordable education,” said Don Germano, President of Follett Higher Education Group. “All of us at Follett are so pleased to recognize and support these outstanding students – driven, brilliant students on a path to be our future leaders.” Student winners were introduced at the Phi Theta Kappa Presidents Breakfast held during the recent AACC Convention in Washington, D.C. In addition to scholarship funds, each ALL-USA Community College Academic Team member was presented with a special medallion. College presidents of team members also received recognition for their leadership. In addition, Follett Higher Education Group presented an additional $25,000 in textbook scholarships to the colleges with students selected to the All-USA Academic Team. The five scholarships of $250 each, a total of $1,250, may be distributed at the colleges’ discretion.

In San Manuel there is a “new” railroad, called San Manuel Arizona RR Company (SMARCO) which was purchased by Capstone from BHP Copper railroad in 2013. This Vancouver-based company owns mines in Canada & Mexico, and services area mines from San Manuel to Hayden, and the Pinto Valley Mining Operation in Globe-Miami on a 29.4 mile rail.

The crew chief for Capstone, Ron Lewallen, recently offered some free help to Kids’ Closet, and brought with him his crew Eric Wright, Matt Lewallen, Caesar Zazueta and Jared Ortiz. They arrived with shovels and wheel barrows, and removed the rock pile in the front parking lot , taking it to another eroded area behind the Kids’ Closet building. The Sycamore Canyon Academy students had moved much rock prior to Capstone’s arrival, but the additional equipment and manpower provided a much improved parking lot for the closet. The area is used not only by volunteers but by the school busses which provide transportation

Past, present, and future Miners’ wrestlers were honored at San Manuel’s Wrestling Banquet last Thursday night. In addition to recognizing and awarding the current members of the Miners’ wrestling team, the 2004 State Championship team was honored, including members of the coaching staff – Hall of Fame coach Manny Yubeta and coach PJ Ponce. San Manuel Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Al Trejo received an award for 20 years of service in the Miners’ wrestling program. San Manuel Jr. High Wrestlers were also present as were members of the Comets wrestling club. “This is a program that entails the small ones all the way to the tall ones,” Mr. Trejo said to begin the night’s festivities.

Current Miners head coach Daniel Najera was joined by members of his coaching staff, including assistants Amanda Trejo and Josh Giles as they hosted the awards banquet. The evening was more than just an award ceremony; it was a recollection of the strong history and tradition of the San Manuel wrestling program and a commitment from current coaches and wrestlers to make sure it continues. “Growing up here and wrestling for Coach Yubeta, Coach Ponce, and Mr. Trejo; it’s more than just a job,” Najera answered when asked what it’s like to lead a program so rich in tradition. “I want to see the program succeed and go on because I’ve also wrestled here. It means a lot, it’s a passionate job. I love doing it, I love being around the kids, and watching them be successful.”

future wrestlers honored at Miners’ banquet Those who were in attendance witnessed the number of wrestlers – small to tall – at the banquet. The passion and pride they feel to be a part of the Miners’ wrestling program was evident. It’s part of the reason why the coaches remain so committed to the wrestlers. “I have to give back to the community what was given to me,” Mr. Trejo said. “We have kids that need leadership and mentorship and that’s why (the wrestling program is special to me).” The current wrestlers are more than familiar with the championship history at San Manuel and they want to continue the tradition started by champions like PJ Ponce. “It means a lot, especially seeing all the state champs,” freshman Franky Renteria said about being a part of the rich history at the school. “It drives me to be a state champ like them. It makes me feel good to, hopefully, be as good as them and fill their shoes.” Colten Smith, a multi-time state champion himself, is leaving a legacy at the school like few others before him. He considers it an honor to be in the same group as some of the other legendary Miners’ wrestlers. To the younger wrestlers who were at the banquet, Colten is to them what PJ Ponce is to him. Smith was asked what makes the history, tradition and legacy of the San Manuel wrestling program so strong over the years. “Everyone always stays close,” Smith answered. “It’s like a big family. It doesn’t matter if you’re a state champion who wrestled in 1960 or a wrestler in 2014, it’s like a brotherhood. It never goes away.” There were several awards handed out last Thursday, including most take downs, most pins, and most reversals, to name a few. But the highlight of the banquet may have been the announcing of the Paper Plate Awards. Those awards were distributed by Assistant coach Amanda Trejo and eagerly anticipated by the wrestlers. Here is a breakdown of those awards:Transformer Award – Jacob Christian,

Hunger Games Tribute Award – Franky Renteria, Best Haircut Award – Frankie Tamayo, Most Likely to Look Good Award – Francisco Medina, The Turtle Award – Miguel Gonzalez, The License to Practice Medicine Award – Colten Smith, Most Likely to Make You LOL Award – Ricky Najera, Pin Me if You Can Award – Carlos Salas, and Pushing the Limits Award – Colby Stratton. The evening concluded with Coach Najera encouraging all the wrestlers to participate in camps during the summer. He wants them to commit to learning and perfecting wrestling moves each month until next season starts. It’s that type of commitment from the wrestlers that will carry on San Manuel’s championship wrestling history and tradition.

Family First volunteers and participants enjoy lunch after an egg coloring session.

Decorating and egg searching at the Oracle Union Church. Indian fry bread at the Easter Blast. After the hunt in Mammoth.

By John HernandezSan Manuel Miner

Easter weekend was busy in the Tri-Community. On Friday kids and their parents enjoyed coloring Easter eggs at Family First in Oracle. Each kid took some eggs and goodies home with them and enjoyed a nice lunch. On Saturday the Easter Bunny with help from the San Pedro Valley Lions Club hid hundreds of eggs at the Mammoth Little League Baseball Park. The smiling kids covered the field looking to fill their baskets. On behalf of all the children that came to the Easter Egg Hunt in

Mammoth, the San Pedro Valley Lions Club would like to thank all the people and businesses for their donations that made it all possible. The donors included La Casita, Mammoth Lumber, Patsy Large, The Corker, Judge Arnold Estrada, Town of Mammoth, Mammoth Firemen’s Fund, Senior Citizens Group, Mammoth Fire Department and members of the San Pedro Valley Lions Club. In San Manuel at the El Centro Youth Center there were raffles, games, food vendors and information booths. It was the third annual Easter Blast sponsored by Adelante Juntos. There was also an Easter egg hunt with the kids looking all over the B Avenue School grounds for the eggs

and candy. A lot of kids went home happy. There were lots of Easter baskets won in the raffles, great food and fun! At the San Manuel Elks Club, the Queen of Hearts was late, late for her important date, at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. In fact everyone was late including the Mad Hatter who never showed up. Perhaps it was not everyone’s cup of tea. On Easter Sunday the church bell rang at the Oracle Union Church sending the children scurrying from flower to flower across the church grounds looking for the wrapped candy and eggs. They filled their baskets with the colorful eggs and went home happy.

Hi! This is Mammoth Elementary STEM School. On Tuesday, April 8th, we had a special activity, “Bugging Out”. Bugging Out was hosted by anthropologist and retired science teacher, John Rhodes and his wife, Marcy Rhodes. This event was in our school gym. It was so fun! We saw many arthropods like scorpions and spiders. Our school enjoyed seeing wood scorpions, sow bugs, black widows and much more. We had 2 stations; one with scorpions and spiders and the other with insects. The school learned scorpions, spiders, most insects, crustaceans, and muscles don’t harm you unless they are threatened (Don’t touch). When we got done, we got to make a habitat for 2 sow bugs. After we made a habitat, we got to take them

By Araceli Curry

After working hard and putting in a lot of dedication Mammoth Elementary Stem School students had great success at SARSEF. In Ms. Formo’s Kindergarten class they had two projects which came in 2nd and 1st place. Germ War, came in 1st place and was about which location had the most germs. The most germs were on the bus. Balancing Act, came in 2nd place, in this project they wanted to see if their worms could balance the soil’s ph. Their results showed that earthworms can balance the soil that was too acidic and too alkaline. In Ms. Faulkenberry’s 1st grade class they had two projects that came in 3rd and 2nd. Wiggling Through the Leaves, came in second, in this project they wanted to see if they could feed their worms with diff erent types of leaves and if potatoes are good for their worms. Their next class project, Worms, Larvae + Pill bugs Eat our Garden, came in 3rd place. They investigated whether they could raise small animals (meal worms, larvae and pill bugs) with only garbage (food waste). They also wanted to see if they could keep enough meal worms and larvae to feed their Bearded Dragon. In Ms. Uttecht’s 2nd grade class they had one project come in 1st place. Their project was called Earth Worm Soil vs. Pill Bug Soil, this project was

about which mustard plant would grow better, with potting soil or pill bug soil. In Ms. Scott’s 4th grade class, they came in 1st with their project Moisture From the Moon. Their project was showed how the moon phases eff ect the moisture in plants. In Ms. Vargas’ 5th/ 6th grade class, they took 2nd with their project The Grey Water Project. Their project was about making a design and model on how to recycle the grey water in their school and to use it to make their school more beautiful. For our individual winner, Cooper Dale from Ms. Formo’s Kindergarten class, Cooper came in 1st place with his project Evaporating Liquids. His project was about which liquid (Milk, Water or Dr. Pepper) could evaporate fastest and the most. It was Dr. Pepper because the bees really liked it. Our next individual winners from Ms. Vargas’ class are Araceli Curry and Victoria Zazueta who came in 2nd place and got an Honorable Mention from the University of Arizona Animal and Plant Research with their project Tea Time. Their project was about which plant would grow better with which tea (Garden Compost Tea, Vermi Compost Tea or Control Tea). Again Mammoth Elementary Stem School had a huge success but it wouldn’t have been possible without the Teachers and Staff .

This time in the gifted program, we’ve been studying endangered animals that are in the Phoenix Zoo. There were 4 groups that picked 1 animal from a selection that included: Black-Footed Ferret, Chiricahua Leopard Frog, Mt. Graham Red Squirrel, or an Arabian Oryx. The 1st group, Mia and Cooper Dale and Hannah Smallhouse picked the Black-Footed Ferret. The 2nd group of Kayla Ortega, Mackenzie Yubeta, and Sienna Taylor picked the Chiricahua Leopard Frog. The 3rd group of Riley Stewart, Ethan Kellam, and Mason Stewart picked the Mt. Graham Red Squirrel. The last group with Pacey Smith-Garcia, Jacob Garcia, and Victoria Zazueta picked the Arabian Oryx. Each one of the groups had to research their specifi c animal and put a poster together to share information. Information included pictures, natural habitat, reason the animals are endangered, ideas of how to help the animal repro-duce and how to reintroduce them into the wild. We designed an enclosure for each animal that was as close to natural as possible. Each group, one at a time, went from classroom to classroom presenting their board and answering questions. After all their hard work, we got to go to the Phoenix Zoo. We saw many animals and their habitats. We also got to see where the endangered animals live. We had a great time, and we still like doing hard work.

Miners cruise past Panthers twiceBy Andrew Luberda

San Manuel Miner

The fifth-ranked San Manuel baseball team cooled off a hot Panthers team in both games last week, 16 – 2 and 14 – 4. The Panthers, currently ranked 16th, entered the week coming off a win over 7th-ranked Ray. “It was a great win for the team,” Miners head coach Steve Elmore said after Friday’s 14 – 4 win. “We had a little adversity in the third inning when they scored four runs off a couple of errors.” Miners’ starting pitcher Richard Romo pitched a complete game to earn the win. “Richard Romo pitched a great game,” Elmore said. “Everybody on defense picked it up and offensively we turned it on.” Elmore was pleased with the defensive effort after the third inning against the

Panthers. The Miners’ defense has been consistent this season and they’ll need that to continue with the playoffs approaching. “Every time I pitch the defense has been solid,” Romo said. “They’ve been playing great especially heading down the home stretch here.” After the two wins last week, the Miners have now won six of their last seven games. They are playing some of their best baseball of the season, which is what good teams want as they begin the postseason. “We’re starting to peak here at the end, which is what we want to do,” Elmore said. “Pitching is coming together, fielding is coming together, and timely hitting is what we need right now.” Upcoming schedule: Apr. 23 vs. Miami (2:00 p.m.), Apr. 24 @ Desert Christian (4:00 p.m.), Apr. 25 @ Cibecue (3:45 p.m.), Apr. 29 vs. Ray (2:00 p.m.), and Apr. vs Bowie (3:45 p.m.). Miners’ Christian Dietz (#1) is ready for the pitch. Kelli Luberda | Miner

The State Champion San Manuel softball team entered its first of two games last week behind, then top-ranked, Superior in the state rankings. The Miners defeated the Panthers in both games to regain the top spot. In addition to reclaiming their spot at the top of the rankings, the Miners extended their winning streak to 16 games, remained undefeated in sectional play, and moved closer to a sectional championship. After a 7 – 5 win at Superior last Wednesday, the Miners beat the Panthers at home last Friday, 5 – 3. The Miners scored three runs after trailing 3 – 2 to earn the comeback victory on Friday. After a number of lopsided wins, it was good for the Miners to play some competitive games as the playoffs approach. “We want to see better pitching and tougher teams,” Miners head coach Deanne Brewer said after Friday’s 5 – 3 win. “Superior is definitely a hitting team. It’s good for us because we haven’t seen a lot of that (in recent games).” Starting pitcher Nicole Encinas pitched well during the first three innings,

allowing three runs. She turned it over to Miners’ ace Lyana Waddell, who held the Panthers scoreless over the final four innings to earn the win. Trailing 3 – 2 in the third inning, the Miners scored a run in each of the next three innings on their way to the victory. Angelica Zuniga hit an RBI single in the third and added an RBI double in the fifth. Mariah McBride hit an RBI single in the fourth. “I thought we did really well today considering we knew it was going to be a tough game,” Lyana Waddell answered when asked about her team’s performance. “We kept our heads up throughout the game and helped each other.” Miners’ co-captain Felicia Medina was asked what she thinks the team can improve on as they prepare to defend their title. “Keeping our bond strong and improving our intensity on the field,” she answered. Medina, who is recovering from an arm injury, hopes to return to the regular lineup full-time before the week of state. “But we’ll see,” she said. Upcoming schedule: Apr. 23 vs. Miami, Apr. 24 @ Desert Christian, Apr. 29 vs. Ray. All games are scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

The Safe Journey House in San Manuel held an open house on Wednesday, April 9 in honor of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is observed every April to promote crime victims’ rights and to honor crime victims and those that advocate for them. This year’s theme was 30 Years: Restoring the Balance of Justice. It marked the 30th anniversary of the passage of the Victims of Crime Act (VOC). Members from government agencies, law enforcement, victim advocate groups, and the community were in at-tendance. Everyone enjoyed a tour of the Safe Journey House as well as some delicious food. Some of the people, agencies and groups in attendance were Kearny Police Chief Bob Ingulli, Debra Miller, community liaison for Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles, advocates from Against Abuse and Pinal County Victim’s Services, Execu-tive Director of Against Abuse Pat Griffin, Casa Grande Police Department, Adelante Juntos, San Manuel Rotary, Central Arizona College and the volunteers of Safe Jour-ney House.

Force during the Korean War. He was deployed to France and while there became a Chris-tian and developed a desire to become a preacher. After he left the Air Force he started preaching and then began mis-sionary work. Pastor Bob and Shirley went on a three year mission to Pretoria, South Af-rica in 1968. There six children went with them. He directed Bible School and was involved in many building projects. After returning from their mission, Pastor Bob began preaching. He preached many years for a number of different churches in various states. In 1990 Bob and Shirley moved to Oracle from Northern Califor-nia. Pastor Bob had retired but his heart was still in preaching the word of God. The Tri-Com-munity Christian Fellowship, a group of about 30 people, were in need of a pastor and Pastor Bob answered the call. They were then able to buy some property on Highway 77 and built a sanctuary that has be-come the Living Word Chapel. The church congregation grew to 225. It now has two Sunday services and around 375 pa-rishioners under Senior Pastor James Ruiz who took over from Pastor Bob. Pastor Bob led the Living Word Chapel’s first mission to Guatemala and still works with the church with their building programs. Shirley has also been very active in the community. Besides being a support to her husband, she has taught swimming lessons in Oracle and SaddleBrooke. She is an active member of the Oracle Community Center. Pastor Bob and Shirley have six children, 13 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. Congratulations on being honored as the 2014 Oracle Oaks Festival Grand Marshals and thank you for your service to the community. Information courtesy Oracle Oaks Festival newspaper.
