VICTORY FOR THE DEVIL?

Deacon Lawrence Klimecki Satan must have been pleased with himself. Imagine this embodiment of evil, the father of lies, a murderer from the beginning, smiling in satisfaction as Jesus dies on the cross. It was the devil's greatest triumph, he thwarted God's plan to save mankind. Ever since the beginning of all things, he hated this creature God had created from the dust of the earth. This man and woman of flesh had cost him everything and his sole purpose for existence became a mission to separate man from God. The devil tried to tempt the Holy One Himself, when that didn't work Satan turned to the followers of Jesus. He had better luck there. He succeeded in getting Judas to betray his Lord, and then tormented Judas with such guilt that the betrayer hanged himself. The devil was then able to get Simon, to deny that he even knew who this Jesus was. The devil delighted in all that followed. A trial that convicted Jesus on the testimony of two liars, pawns of the devil, a sentence of death, the pain and suffering, the torture of the Savior, must have pleased Satan no end. Finally, Jesus is executed in the most humiliating way possible, as a common criminal, crucified between two thieves. Surely, thought the evil one, God had been thwarted. There would be no salvation for man. After all, he, the devil, was the prince of this world. He held man firmly in his grasp and would not let him go. The “Savior of the World” was dead, how could He now usher in the Kingdom of God? At the very least, God would have to come up with a better plan. And so the devil sat back, very pleased with himself. His realm of the damned would continue to grow, Heaven would be empty and God would know the pain of the loneliness that He had sentenced Satan to. But then, something was not quite right. An uneasiness that the Liar could not shake crept over him. Far off at the edge of his realm, he heard a noise. It was soft at first, but grew louder. Angels, those spirits that refused to join him in his rebellion so long ago, were singing “Alleluia!” The smile fell from his face as he heard a booming echo throughout Sheol. The booming continued until at last the gates of Hell crashed down, trampled underfoot by the Messiah. The Savior, anointed by the Holy Spirit, came not as a damned soul, but as a King shining with the uncreated light of God. And Satan, perhaps for the first time, was afraid. The Resurrection of Jesus is the fulfillment of all of God's promises to us. Not even a spirit, whose sole purpose is to separate us from God, can thwart that. God has promised us eternal life in the Kingdom to come, with Jesus as our King. And nothing, no evil power, no enemy of God can prevent that from happening. We know how the story ends, we win. JOE’S CAFÉ…Stop by for a tasty bit! Joe Romanazzi, Past Grand Knight

Is there a Doctor in the House?

We rely on the expertise of medical doctors to help us recover from injuries, illnesses, and diseases. But, did you know that the Catholic Church also has a group of specialists that are called Doctors of the Church? This title (in Latin, Doctor means “teacher”) is given by the Catholic Church to extraordinary saints recognized as having made significant contributions to theology or doctrine through their research, studies or writings. These Doctors treat the spiritual needs of the Catholic Church and are revered for the defense and explanation of the truths of the Catholic faith. Their writings and preaching are considered useful to Christians in any age of the church.

Thirty-six (36) holy men and women have received the official designation of Doctors of the Church bestowed upon them by various Popes over the centuries. They are St. Ambrose, St. Jerome, St. Augustine, Pope St. Gregory the Great, St. Athanasius, St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory Nazianzus, St. John Chrysostom, St. Ephraem, St. Hilary of Poitiers, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, St. Cyril of Alexandria, Pope St. Leo the Great, St. Peter Chrysologus, St. Isidore, St. Bede the Venerable, St. John Damascene, St. Peter Damian, St. Anselm, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Albertus Magnus, St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Peter Canisius, St. John of the Cross, St. Robert Bellarmine, St. Lawrence of Brindisi, St. Francis de Sales, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. John of Avila, St. Hildegard of Bingen, and St. Gregory of Narek.

In the 1736 edition of Poor Richard’s Almanac, Benjamin Franklin wrote, “God heals, and the doctor takes the fee”. This influential Founding Father of our country recognized that Jesus Christ is Our Divine Physician. Also known as God MD in Heavenly circles, His Amazing Grace heals our bodies, our souls, and our spirit. Christ performed numerous healing miracles during his life. He offered healing to everyone and when challenged remarked, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners” (Mark 2:17).

My Brothers, Our Divine Physician loves to make house calls to relieve our pain and suffering and has been doing so through the ages. All it takes is an open and honest conversation with Him and a willingness to accept His peace, joy and freedom. He offers encouragement and compassion and his bed-side manner can’t be beat. Happily, people in need are always able to consult with God MD at any hour of the day or night. No appointments are ever necessary, no co-payments are ever required, and best of all He is accepting new patients… The Doctor is in, no waiting!

Today’s VeteranOfTheDay is Navy Veteran Joseph Kievernagel, who served on the USS Forrestal during the July 29, 1967, fire.

Joseph Kievernagel enlisted in the Navy while living in Modesto, California in July 1964. After completing basic training at San Diego Naval Center, he attended the yeoman class “A” school. His first assignment was in the weapons department of the administrative office at Naval Air Station Cecil Field, Florida. For his work there, Kievernagel promoted to petty officer second class in October 1966.

With the escalation of conflict in Vietnam, Kievernagel became the petty officer in the administrative department for Attack Squadron 46. He served aboard the USS Forrestal in the Gulf of Tonkin. After docking briefly in the Philippines in mid-July 1967, the USS Forrestal arrived at Yankee Station. Naval aircraft carried out bombing missions in North Vietnam from this coordinate point. On July 29, 1967, as the attack squadron’s aircraft prepared to carry out an air raid when, an explosion rocked the flight deck. The explosion heavily damaged the ship’s lower decks, killing 134 members of the crew. The explosion and ensuing fire destroyed or damaged 61 of the squadron’s planes. The incident was the worst loss of life on a U.S. naval ship since World War II.

As part of the attack squadron’s administrative department, Kievernagel’s unit handled both correspondence to Naval Headquarters and the personal correspondence of those killed in the explosion or during rescue attempts. In September 1967, he received a commendation for his dedication to duty in the aftermath of the tragedy. Kievernagel later returned to Cecil Field and was put in charge of the administrative office for Attack Squadron 46. He later was transferred to the Naval Reserves in July 1968 and, after two years, was honorably discharged in July 1970. For his service onboard the USS Forrestal, Kievernagel received the Vietnam Service Medal with a bronze star.

Kievernagel joined the Veterans of the Foreign Wars in the 1980s and served as a hospitality chairman for six years. He also helped with the VFW’s Buddy Poppy program, which oversees the creation of memorial poppies by disabled Veterans to provide financial assistance to needy Veterans. Additionally, Kievernagel is an active member of the Knights of Columbus in Sacramento, California, frequently participating in council charity events and serving as a mentor to younger Knights.Thank you for your service!

*****A PALADIN SPECIAL REPORT ***** Congratulations and Happy 60th Anniversary!

May 10, 2020 marks the Diamond Anniversary of Arden-Carmichael Council 4970. A wonderful thing happened sixty years ago. It was on May 10, 1960, that the original group of fifty-six dedicated members joined together to form Arden-Carmichael Council 4970. In all those years we have cared for and served thousands of God’s people. We have raised and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars for the benefit of our parishes and various non-profit, non-denominational organizations. Our Council achievements has been recognized numerous times by the State and Supreme Offices of the Knights of Columbus. These achievements could not have been possible without those Brothers that went before us nor without the hard work of our current 160 plus Council members and their families. They say that Diamonds are forever. So, it is with our Council Brothers and Lady Knights. We have been together through thick and thin. We have experienced good times and bad, joys and sorrows. We have formed many friendships and shared memories galore. Our Brotherhood is solid and shiny as a brilliant diamond. The secret to our Council’s success is based on our enduring love and commitment to our Divine Lord and His Church, and to providing services which honor and give glory to Him. We are proud of our 60 years of giving happiness, love, loyalty and service to others. We are proud of our 60 years of helping Christ in His mission while at the same time honoring the fraternal ideals proclaimed by our founder, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. We are proud of our 60 years of moving forward, in charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. Brothers, let’s bow our heads in prayer, then raise our glasses for a toast. We pray that our Blessed Mother Mary will now and forever protect and guide us in the continued success of our Council and of our programs and activities. We pray that the Lord will gift our Council with many more years of good fortune. May He grant good health and happiness to our Knights, Lady Knights and all the families of Council 4970. Amen. Our toast are words from Hellen Keller who said, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched; they must be felt.” Happy 60 Whole Years of Being Awesome and May the Souls of All Our Departed Brother Knights Rest in Peace! Here, Here, and Clink, Clink.

TOGETHER WE CAN WIN

Every year Sacramento Stand Down provides direct services to nearly 300 homeless and at-risk Veterans throughout Sacramento County. Our Veterans now face strains and hardships that are making their life all the more difficult. Veterans who already pushed to the financial brink are now facing an impossible task. Find the essentials of everyday life, if they can afford to pay the increased cost of ride-sharing because they now have to visit 3 or 4 stores to find a dozen eggs or a loaf of bread. Or pay the increased/inflated cost of these items on their already stretched to the limit budget. Our Veterans, who were termed at-risk of becoming homeless, are now facing what they were so desperately trying to avoid, a life of homelessness. A life that no Veteran deserves. Every member of our shared community is impacted by COVID-19; this is a fact that we are all facing. What is so very scary is the lasting effect for those on the cusp of homelessness and labeled at-risk. A new battle is being waged at these Veteran's doorstep, their enemy is homelessness, and their weapon of choice is fear.

Today’s VeteranOfTheDay is Air Force Veteran Anthony Carvelli, who worked on aircraft and mechanical maintenance during a career spanning 41 years. Anthony Carvelli grew up in Brooklyn, New York and after graduating high school, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1951. Following basic training, he went to Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, to attend an electronics training school. Afterward, Carvelli deployed to Tachikawa Air Force Base in Tokyo, Japan, in 1952. During the Korean airlift, he worked on the repair and maintenance of radar systems for C-54 and C-124 aircraft.

After returning to the U.S. in 1954, Carvelli transferred to the Air Force Reserve and served on numerous bases as a maintenance worker for aircraft. At Maxwell AFB, Alabama, he worked on the radar systems of KC-97 refueling planes. He later went to Floyd Bennett Naval Air Station, New York, to work on airborne radar and radio systems of C-119 aircraft.

In the 1960s, Carvelli served at Stewart, Bolling and Mitchell AFBs, working on planes in the 336th Military Airlift Squadron. While at Stewart, Carvelli’s unit deployed to Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, to assist in recovery efforts following the “Good Friday Earthquake” of March 27, 1964. He later went to England and supported refueling planes at Mildenhall Air Base.

Following the January 1968 USS Pueblo incident, Carvelli went active. He deployed to Kunsan AFB, South Korea, in anticipation of military conflict. Carvelli was the shop chief, working on F-100 aircraft. After release of the USS Pueblo crew in December 1968, Carvelli returned to the U.S. and went to Hamilton Air Base, California. He served as branch chief over all avionics shops on C-124 and C-130 aircraft.

Carvelli later worked at Mather AFB as the avionics branch chief of KC-135 tanker aircraft and at McClellan AFB as the manager of the management and procedures aircraft maintenance division for Fourth Air Force. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1992 as a chief master sergeant. Carvelli advises military retirees with Medicare on TriCare for Life and the military pharmacy program. Additionally, he serves as a volunteer at the Military Retiree Office in Sacramento, California, and with the Knights of Columbus. Thank you for your service!
