TRAYLOR RANCH NATURE RESERVE

Our 3rd workday for the year at Traylor Ranch Nature Reserve was on Saturday June 23rd. Once again we had a good turnout. It is through the efforts of these volunteers which makes and keeps TRNR the special place that it is. The weedwackers this month included Maureen Henderson, Judie Lew and Wes Babcock. Thanks to Mary Westfall and Jennifer Wright who filled gopher holes and cut back blackberry vines and Annette who also contributed to the vine cutting. Linda Potter and I mowed all the trails and open areas. If you see any of these people, please give them a big thank you. The park is in great shape. Come out and enjoy it. There will be no more work days for the next couple months. We’ll be sure to give you plenty of notice. If anyone has any questions or comments on TRNR, please don't hesitate to drop me a note.

Loomis Basin Horsemen’s Association Minutes— September 2012

LBHA Minutes September 19, 2012 Round Table Pizza Meeting Room

The meeting was called to order by treasurer Donna Kelly at 7:03PM

An announcement was made regarding the Crystal Costa Benefit Horse Show to be held Oct.12-14 at the Rafter B-6 Ranch in Auburn. It was suggested that LBHA pur-chase a $20 raffle ticket. A discussion was held about creating a link to update members regarding events at various parks and conflicting trail activities. Donna Williams presented information about obtaining a storage shed at Sterling Point. She stated that Terry Haney may be willing to purchase the unit at a possible cost of $1800. A discussion was had regarding obtaining a pod, tuff shed or having a cinder block unit built. LBHA supports a cinder block unit and will obtain estimates on the cost. The size of the unit is to be 5'x8'. LBHA will look into permits necessary to build the shed. Further discussion was tabled until the October meeting. Kathy Dombrowski gave on update on the LBHA October 13-14 Horse Show. Cur-rently LBHA has obtained $675 in money donations and $1450 in product donations. More sponsors are still needed. Janis Rau still needs volunteers for the show. Volunteers are needed for Friday after 4:00PM for setting up the jumps and for Saturday and Sunday show days. Drawing for the custom made head stall will be held on Sunday at the end of the Western Horse Show. The meeting was adjourned at 7:34PM Nancy Steuck Secretary

Black Oak Equestrian Campground Jenkinson Lake, Sly Park Recreational Area, El Dorado Irrigation District

Highway 50 area, central El Dorado County, California by Robert H. Sydnor

AERC Trail Master and Engineering Geologist

October 2012 Introduction:

Jenkinson Lake is within the Sly Park Recreation Area, and there are two equestrian loca-tions within this area: Black Oak Equestrian Campground, and a separate equestrian staging area along the south side of the lake. This land is owned and operated by the El Dorado Irri-gation District (E.I.D.), with public access for boating, camping, hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails. A 9-mile horse trail goes around Jenkinson Lake.

Location: Take Highway 50, go about 17 miles eastward from Placerville, then take Exit #60 at Pollock

Pines. Turn south (=right), and go 4.2 miles southward on County Road #E-16, Sly Park Road. At the junction of Sly Park Road and Mormon Emigrant Trail, look for the paved driveway leading to Black Oak Equestrian Campground.

Notice that campsites #3, #7, and #14 have electricity nearby. There are water faucets near #3 and #14. Modern vault toilets are located near #1 and #14. It is adroit to temporarily park your horse trailer in the parking area, then walk the campground to ascertain the best campsite, select it, unload your horses to the separate pipe-corrals, then drive to your campsite with confidence, and finally, back-in your *empty* horse trailer without spooking your horses.

Reservations and Costs: Telephone Information about equestrian camping: (530) 295-6824 Telephone Reservations: (530) 295-6810 www.eid.org [email protected]

For the Equestrian Assembly Area along Mormon Emigrant Trail (USFS paved road #5) the cost is $5.00 per day, and reservations are not needed since this is day-use only.

For Black Oak Equestrian Camp, the cost is $35.00 per day, with a discount for Seniors at $28.00 per day. There is a $15.00 cancellation fee.

All 15 spaces at Black Oak Equestrian Campsite can be reserved as a “group” for $265.00 per day (which computes to only $17.67 per site per day for a full group). Group reservations can be made up to 14 months in advance, so many horse associations presciently plan ahead for next summer, and cleverly book-up Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day.

There is a Reservation Fee of $8.00 per site. Checks are not accepted. Cash or credit cards only. Campsite check-in time is 2:00 PM. Check-out time is Noon. There is a 14-day limit for camping. There is a limit of eight persons per campsite with several horses for each campsite. Quiet hours are 9:00 PM until 6:00 AM. Dogs must be on leash at all times, and dogs are not allowed to swim in Jenkinson Lake (a drinking water-supply for the public). Firewood may be brought in, but campfires are restricted to the metal fire-rings.

At left: Signage for Black Oak Equestrian Camp. At right: extra supplies may be purchased at a local gro-cery store, about one mile from the horse camp. Note that diesel is not available, but may be purchased at the Shell Station in Pollock Pines (about five miles away) near Highway 50.

Horse Trail Map of Jenkinson Lake: This map shows the relationship of the Equestrian Staging Area and Black Oak Eques-

trian Camp. Both sites are set away from the hundreds of boating campers on the north and northeastern sectors of the lake. This is for safety reasons, and we horsemen prefer to camp by ourselves, and far away from a congested public campground with spooky boats.

At left: each of the 15 campsites has separate pipe-corrals for horses. So there is no need for high-lining or portable corrals. At right: there are two modern vault-toilets within the Black Oak Equestrian Campground. There are no horse-troughs or wash-racks, so bring your own water-hoses with Y-valve splitters (for sharing a faucet), and horse-watering buckets.

Equestrian Assembly Area: The photographs below are from the Equestrian Assembly Area along USFS Road #5, the Mormon

Emigrant Trail. This is a fee area, so be prepared with a $5 dollar bill for your pay envelope. The eques-trian assembly area is mainly for day-riders, and is entirely separate from the Black Oak Equestrian Campground.
