UNIVERSAL ELECTIVESWhat are Universal Electives?Universal Electives are more general elective courses that could fit into a variety of different pathways. The skills learned in a universal elective could benefit you in most any career you choose.

For students considering college as your next step, you'll note some of these course - like world languages - are strongly recommended or in some cases required for acceptance. Talk with your counselor for more information.

Did You Know?Multilingual employees

English.

STEP 4: Select your elective coursesConsider courses from the universal electives below, which could help you in most any career or college you choose. Or, check out the more specialized courses outlined in any of the four new Career Pathways areas listed in the following pages.

Page 10: STILLWATER AREA HIGH SCHOOL...916 Career & Tech (916): Seniors may take courses taught at Northeast Metro 916, a career and technical education program located at Century College.

Providing new ways for you to think about and plan for your future“We learn not for school but for life” is more than just our school motto. It’s our mission to help prepare you for a meaningful and enjoyable life beyond Stillwater Area High School - wherever your path leads you!

We know you learn best when you are learning about things that interest you, and that you perform better when you can see the connection between the classroom and the real world. Our new Pathways program does just that! It will help you better understand your career options, get hands-on experience in a variety of areas and leave high school with marketable experiences. We’re preparing you for the next step, whether that’s employment, a technical program, associate degree, certification, four-year college degree or military.

Here’s how it worksIn addition to taking required core courses like math, science, social studies, physical education and language arts, you can also choose to select from a variety of elective courses in one of four pathway areas:

Within each pathway there are three to five Programs of Study, where you can dig deeper into a particular area of interest. Each program will lead you through introductory classes all the way to advanced level courses that could earn you college credit or even an industry certification or degree. There are also options within the Universal Electives area which would benefit you in whatever path you might choose.

Extend your learning outside the classroomWithin this registration guide you’ll also see a listing of clubs and activities that might interest you and help you gain valuable skills. We are also working to find ways for you to connect with professionals in our community to expand learning beyond the classroom. These opportunities may include job shadowing, mentorships, internships and other career exploration experiences. If you're interested, talk to your counselor to learn more.

The Fine PrintYou are not required to declare a pathway, nor are you prevented from selecting courses in more than one pathway. The goal is to help you explore courses that might interest you and understand how classes and careers fit together.
