Everyone Has a Story

In a lively interview format, Joe Williams engages us with fascinating people who have amazing stories. Each session will be a fresh, in-depth look at an individual’s background and experiences along with their love for the path they have followed in their lives. While Joe will be the principal interviewer, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of guests, as well, and, toward the end of the

session, will have the opportunity to share their own unique stories. Our special guests will include:• Frederick and Janet Drummond, on the rich history of their lives and the Drummond Ranch;• Cecil Epperley, former banker and coach, on his days playing for the legendary Henry P. Iba at OSU in the early 1960s;• Susan Ellerbach, Executive Editor of the Tulsa World, on the state of journalism, her career, and being the fi rst woman Executive Editor of the World;• Steve Bell, a talented musician who, in his early days, toured with such groups as the Captain & Tennille, Harlem Riot, and Lou Rawls. Today he and his family own Bell Camper Sales.• Bob Fraser, CEO of Woolaroc, on his life and the little known stories of Uncle Frank’s ranch, wildlife preserve, and art museum.Joe Williams’ credits his formal education to OSU where he earned a B.A. in journalism and advertising management followed by an M.A.in mass communications. He then contin-ued on to multiple careers in the army, radio, newspaper, corpo-rate management consultant, and educator. He has authored several books, founded his own management consulting fi rm, received international recognition and holds more than 120 national awards for his writing, design, and research. He says his “real” education came through a love of adventure, taking risks, making mistakes and also grand successes. Joe’s last OLLI class took you on his 500-mile pilgrimage over the Pyrenees of France and across northern Spain to the tomb of St. James the apostle in Santiago de Compostela.

Successful collectors know what they like, but, more to the point, they make deliberate, informed decisions based on research and knowledge of the items they intend to collect. Discover what defi nes an antique or a work of art, what makes it desirable, what makes it valuable. Learn about the categories of antiques: metal, ceramics, wood, and textiles, along with types of artwork, such as paintings, prints, and other mediums. Find the research tools that will help you make sound judgments about the quality and desirability of the pieces that catch your eye. You’ll also learn about auctions, tag sales, and appraisals. Bring an item of interest to the fi nal class meeting for discussion and appraisal. Appraisers and lifelong collectors John West and Ed White will help you refi ne your research skills, broaden your knowledge base, and sharpen your collector’s instincts.

Clutterbusting 2: Clearing the Way!

Clearing clutter is a process, an on-going assess-ment of what is important to you and your happi-ness. You may have learned the basic steps toward keeping your world tidy, but it takes practice to make it a habit and enjoy the benefi ts. Whether you’ve been here before and need a refresher or this is your fi rst time approaching the task, Kevin Bennett will help you learn how to get rid of the

things in your life that no longer serve you. Based on the book Clutterbusting by Brooks Palmer, we’ll explore how we use clutter to protect ourselves, control others, and cling to the past. We’ll also learn how clearing clutter makes room for clarity, sweeps away confusion, and helps us experience the joy of connecting with others. With Kevin’s upbeat and compas-sionate guidance, you’ll fi nd yourself clearing the way for new and exciting things to come into your life. Kevin Bennett is a lifelong Bartlesville resident with a passion for big ideas and broad perspectives. He makes his living as a real estate investor and enjoys learning, taking classes, and traveling with his wife, Cindy. Kevin has taught six previous classes for OLLI.

Great Decisions 2018

Gordon Stallings and OLLI @ OSU in Bartlesville pres-ent Great Decisions 2018, America’s largest discussion program on world aff airs. The program model investigates a diff erent topic each week, discussing the most critical global issues facing America today. The waning of Pax Americana?During the fi rst months of Trump’s presidency, the U.S. began a historic shift away from Pax Americana, the inter-national order that was established in the wake of World War II. Since 1945, Pax Americana has promised peaceful international relations and an open economy. Russia’s foreign policyRussia is projecting an autocratic model of governance abroad and working to undermine the infl uence of democ-racies. Russia caused an international uproar in 2016, when it interfered in the U.S. presidential contest. China and America: the new geopolitical equationIn the last 15 years, China has implemented a wide-rang-ing strategy of economic outreach and expansion of all its national capacities. Where the United States has taken a step back from multilateral trade agreements and discarded the Trans-Pacifi c Partnership, China has made inroads. Media and foreign policyState and non-state actors today must maneuver a complex and rapidly evolving media landscape. Foreign policy is tweeted from the White House. Cyberwarfare, hacking and misinformation pose complex security threats. U.S. global engagement and the militaryThe global power balance is rapidly evolving, leaving the United States at a turning point with respect to its level of engagement and the role of its military. Some argue for an “America First” paradigm, with a large military to ensure security, while others call for a more assertive posture overseas. Global health: progress and challengesThe collective action of countries, communities and organizations over the last 30 years has literally saved millions of lives around the world. The world now faces a mix of old and new health challenges, including continuing epidemics of infectious diseases, and rising rates of chronic disease.

Korea, Vietnam & The Importance of LBJ

Korea and VietnamJoe Todd, with video camera in hand, has interviewed more than a thousand individuals for the sake of preserving what should never be lost. Using these interviews, letters, and photographs, he presents the personal accounts of Oklaho-mans’ wartime experiences. During the fi rst three weeks of this course, he will introduce you to the Korean and Vietnam Confl icts beginning with a history of Korea and including inter-views with veterans and U.S. prisoners of war. To honor the centennial of World War I, he will also talk about the veterans of that war and the history of the USS Oklahoma, from the time the keel was laid in 1912 until she capsized in Pearl Harbor. Joe L Todd earned a degree in Anthropology from OU followed by graduate work at the University of Texas. As a member of the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1994, he has served in Vietnam, Iraq and Kuwait (Operation Desert Storm), Surinam, and Haiti. He worked at the Oklahoma Historical Society from 1971 until he retired in 2001. The Importance of Lyndon JohnsonThe Great Society, Medicare, Medicaid, the War on Poverty, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, counterculture, feminism, the sexual revolution, the space race, Vietnam. All these either originated or grew to maturity during the administration of Lyndon Johnson, and every one of these initiatives profoundly infl uence American culture to this very day. During the second three weeks of this course, you’ll examine how these issues grew to such importance, the role of Lyndon Johnson in that process, and how they combine to make him, for better or worse, one of the most important presidents in American history.Dwight W. Short is an OU graduate and Certifi ed Public Accountant. Dwight has been active in community aff airs and politics since his high school days, and he cultivates a scholarly interest in political and historical matters. In particular, he is interested in how politics infl uence law and how law, in turn, infl uences politics. He believes that freedom does not just happen. It is an arduous and often perilous journey, requiring all actors in the political process to strive constantly to fi nd common ground.

The Genius of Elia Kazan

Bartlesville Unitarian Universalist Church of Bartlesville 428 S Seneca Ave.

Charlie Taraboletti is News Director and Operations Manager for KWON-KYFM-KRIG-KPGM radio in Bartlesville. He’s a long-time fan of good cinema. He enjoyed photography while in grade school and high school, both behind the lens and in the darkroom. As a teen-ager you’d fi nd him in the theater Saturday afternoons watching a good movie more than once, particularly murder mysteries or suspense films. As you would expect with most newsmen, Charlie enjoys telling a story, so he appreciates how a great story-teller might do it.

The recipient of countless awards and honors Elia Kazan was known as a prolifi c fi lmmaker, who drew out the best dramatic performances from actors fortunate enough to work under his direction. Kazan’s fi lms garnered 59 Academy Award nomi-nations and received 21 Oscars as a result. He was a complicated man caught up in the real-life drama of the House Committee on Un-Amer-ican Activities when he testified in 1952 and drew the ire of friends and colleagues, a stigma that stayed with him for the rest of his life. Kazan had a preference for topics that expressed personal and social issues important to him. He strove for cinematic realism and he looked for unknown actors to fi ll the roles. He had a gift for fi nding them and for creating great classics. Join us for a look at the life of the cinematic genius, Elia Kazan.
