Welcome to Palm Beach Synagogue

In January 1994, a small group of dedicated people started holding traditional Shabbat services at Temple Emanuel in Palm Beach. This gathering was transformed into a community with the arrival of Rabbi Moshe and Rebbetzin Dinie Scheiner. Based

on the philosophy of outreach and inclusiveness, the Scheiners were passionate in their desire to “make a difference.” From its humble beginnings, Palm Beach Synagogue has blossomed into a flourishing center of Jewish life and activity that prides itself on being a place of warm welcome for Jews from all walks of life and all levels of Jewish observance, while maintaining its abiding adherence to traditional Jewish law and observance of mitzvot. With its inviting spirit, the Synagogue is a place where people are committed to the love and support of our fellow Jews, religious traditions, the community at large, and the State of Israel. Today PBS, housed in a beautifully renovated edifice in the heart of Palm Beach, two blocks north of the Breakers Hotel, offers unique programs in Jewish education and communal life, numerous youth activities, holiday services and celebrations, daily morning and afternoon/evening minyanim and weekly Shabbat services.

From the RabbiDear Friends,

Welcome to the Palm Beach Synagogue’s new combined Calendar and Program Guide. It’s a perfect marriage between quantity and quality. While a calendar marks the days of our lives, our Synagogue Program Guide offers opportunities to make the most of each and every day. The word “ZMAN” in Hebrew means both Time and Invitation. Every moment of life is not only a gift, but an invitation from G-d to join Him in creating something meaningful and lasting in our lives and the lives of our family. A calendar marks time, but our program guide is the invitation to fill our time with prayer, learning, kindness and friendship. The Palm Beach Synagogue Program Guide Calendar and its plethora of programs and activities for all ages and stages, will enable you in the New Year to not only count time, but make your time count. So as we embark on the Hebrew calendar year 5777, we are delighted and excited about our vast list of opportunities for learning, growth and community. We are grateful for our dedicated and wonderful membership and our exceptional Synagogue leadership and staff. It is thanks to all of you that Palm Beach Synagogue is such a spiritual and magical place. Dinie and I wish each and every one of you a Shanah Tovah Umetukah, a sweet and good New Year filled with love, joy and bountiful blessings.

Sincerely yours,

Rabbi Moshe E. Scheiner

From the PresidentI hope you like and find our new Calendar/Program Guide useful. We hope that it will foster meaningful attendance and participation at our Synagogue’s plethora of classes, lectures, social activities, and daily minyanim. I know of no other synagogue that offers Palm Beach Synagogue’s array of opportunities to enhance and elevate one’s Jewish life experience, at every age level, beginning at toddler and extending to ripe old ages. Our Synagogue is led by a Rabbi and Rebbitzen who are very special, and you, our members, are also very special, and you fully deserve what the Synagogue offers. ENJOY!

Adult EducationLiving with the Times: Our Weekly Torah CommandmentsShabbat: Class begins one hour before Mincha

The weekly portion to-do list explores the practical application of the commandments contained in the weekly Parsha. This intimate class enjoys an environment of learning and socializing. Following Mincha, everyone is welcome to join and enjoy Seudah Shlishit.

Seudah ShlishitShabbat after Mincha

Seudah Shlishit (Shabbat’s third meal) often has additional inspiring commentaries from Rabbi Moshe Scheiner or a guest speaker. We conclude with Ma’ariv and Havdalah services. The Talmud teaches that the unique spiritual dimensions of this meal assure that one who fulfills this obligation to eat the third meal merits favorable judgment in the world to come.

Tuesday Torah TopicsTuesdays, 12:15 PM

Enjoy an energizing discussion while analyzing the weekly Torah portion. We will explore insights into the relevance of the stories and commandments of our daily lives.

TanyaWednesdays, 7:30 PM

Written by Rabbi Schneur Zalman, the founder of Chabad, Tanya is the central text of Chabad Chassidism. Its stated aim is to show a path to realizing one’s potential and purpose by developing a deeper relationship with G-d. The Tanya compacts four millennia of Jewish wisdom to answer the great personal and existential questions of life. It seeks to achieve a change in the way Jews perceive themselves and revolutionize the way we think about G-d, the human soul and the world.

Ladies’ Living Room Learning— A Weekly Torah Class for WomenTimeless Wisdom and Relevant Tools for Contemporary Life.

Wednesdays, 10:30 AM at the home of Rebbetzin Dinie Scheiner

Pirkei Avot, a transmission of rich ethics and fundamental principles, is unique in that it is the only tractate of the Mishnah dealing solely with ethical and moral principles. This class will go beyond the classic text to explore the relationship between the beliefs of our sages and modern psychology. Please join us and explore this ethical guide of character refinement that will lead us to positive relationships and a more meaningful life.

Defining Your Role in Life: A Five Part Series with Rabbi Josh BroideOct 26, Nov 2, Nov 16, Dec 7, Dec 21

Who are you? What are your values? What are your ambitions? What is unique about you? Defining your role in life requires some thinking about your personality and your values. What is important to you? Are you impressed by the same things that impress others? If your desires and ambitions are similar to those of most members of the society around you, have you thought about your values consciously and chosen them for yourself? These classes will address these timeless issues with depth and clarity. Based on the teachings of Rabbi Dr. Akiva Tatz.

Each subgroup of teens will be assigned a mentor who has demonstrated successful leadership in his or her selected field and has received training in the curriculum. In the subgroups, the mentor will augment the discussion of the monthly topic through exploration of real life challenges faced by the mentor and explore with the subgroup in greater depth the lesson of the month.

Defining Your Role in LifeA Five-Part Series with Rabbi Josh Broide

Wednesday, Oct 26 • 7 PM

Free Will—The Real YouThe most important thing to grasp about being human is the fact that you have free choice. You make the decisions. You are responsible. We shall attempt to show that the secular world is not so sure about this, but as a Jew, you have to know that everything significant in life depends on this idea. Let us explore the concept of free will and understand why it is essential in coming to grips with who you really are. What are the components of human free will and what are its limits?

Rabbi Josh Broide is the Director of Engagement for the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach, as well as the Outreach Rabbi at the Boca Raton Synagogue. In 2015, The Jewish Daily Forward listed him as one the most inspiring American Rabbis. He also received the National Jewish Outreach Program’s Leslie Nelkin Special Service Award for his commitment to outreach.

OrdealsIt is a basic Torah idea that a major part of the purpose of life is to stand strong in ordeals. Now an obvious question arises: Why would Hashem test us if He knew beforehand what the outcome would be? If you can pass the test easily, where is the real achievement? If it’s impossible to pass, why would Hashem test us in the first place?

Passover ExtravaganzaSunday, Apr 2 • 11 AM

There are so many unique, once-a-year traditions associated with the Passover holiday. The PBS Kids’ Pesach Extravaganza will get you educated and excited to do them all! Take part in the Matzah Bakery where you actually make your own matzah by hand. And the highlight is definitely the student-led Model Seder. We will have all the Passover delicacies on hand, though some may think bitter herbs is hardly a treat. Work off the food you eat by making your way through the challenging Ten Plagues obstacle course. No better way to celebrate freedom!

Middle School Scavenger Hunt Sunday, Apr 2 • 1:30–3:30 PM

Middle schoolers from Palm Beach, Boca Raton and Boynton Beach will meet at The Boca Town Center Shopping Mall for a scavenger hunt. Each team will be given several challenges to compete for points. The team with the most points will be declared the winner!

PassoverFeb 10–Feb 17

A special Passover packet will be mailed with details on times of services, meals, pricing, and special instructions for Passover observance. All holiday meals require advanced registration.
