Catholic Parishes of Mudgee, Gulgong, Kandos/Rylstone d 1 First Reading: Isaiah 50: 4-7 I did not cover my face against insult and I know I will not be ashamed. Responsorial Psalm: Ps 21: 8-9, 17-20, 23-24 R.v.2 All: My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? All who see me deride me. They curl their lips, they toss their heads. ‘He trusted in the Lord, let him save him: let him release him if this is his friend.’ (R) Many dogs have surrounded me, a band of the wicked beset me. They tear holes in my hands and my feet, I can count every one of my bones. (R) They divide my clothing among them. They cast lots for my robe. O Lord, do not leave me alone, my strength, make haste to help me! (R) I will tell of your name to my brethren and praise you where they are assembled. ‘You who fear the Lord give him praise; all sons of Jacob, give him glory.(R) Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 He humbled himself to become like us and God raised him on high. REFLECTION In this final Lenten Sunday we look again at the significance of Christ in our lives. We recognise him as our saviour, but we look more closely in order to discover just what kind of saviour he is. He has taken the form of a slave; he has been glorified with a name above all other names; he conQnues to suffer with us. We have not been saved through military power, but through the self-offering humility of Jesus. Though he was really in the form of God, Jesus came in the form of a slave. We have a saviour who was crushed for our iniquiQes, nailed to a cross as a convicted felon, and there endured the sense of abandonment. In the face of this, we must ask a fundamental quesQon: Why does God love us with such abandon? We have a saviour who was lihed up and exalted precisely because he empQed himself of his divine prerogaQves. He became one of us in order to show us how we are to live. Unlike conquerors who triumph by puPng down their opponents, Jesus was raised up because he himself was first willing to be put down. We have a saviour who first offered himself for us and then conQnues to offer himself to us as an example to follow. As he was willing to empty himself for our sake, so we are told to empty ourselves for the sake of others. © Dianne Bergant CSA

There’sAWidenessinGod’sMercy.

There’s a wideness in God’s mercylike the wideness of the sea, andforgiveness in his jusQce sealed forus on Calvary. There is plenQfulredempQon through the blood thatChrist has shed; there is joy for allthemembers in the sorrows of theHead.

For the love of God broader thanthemeasures of themind; and theheart of the Eternal is the mostwonderfully kind. But we make hislovetoonarrowbyfalselimitsofourown, andwemagnify his strictnesswithazealhewillnotown.

Restless souls, why do you scaserlike a crowd of frightened sheep?Foolish hearts, why do youwanderfromalovesotrueanddeep?Ifourlove were but more simple weshouldtakehimathisword;andourlives would be illumined by thegoodnessoftheLord.

HYMNSFORSUNDAYMASS IN FOCUS Blessed are the Merciful It seems to me that through my son’sgrowing-up years, I have felt every slightpain, misunderstanding, rejecQon, etc.,thathehasexperienced.Heneverwalkedto thesamedrummerandneverdreamedthesamedreamsashispeers.Tothisday, hehearshisowndrumbeat, and forbeingdifferent he has suffered, mostly unjustly.(Lots of joys in life too, not to overstatehere). In today’s gospel Jesus is on thecross, certainly unjustly, and sQll thecrowdsmockhim.Theleadershavenopityandevenoneofthethieveshangingbesidehim is jeering at him. The other one,though,understandsthatJesusisinnocentanddidnotdeservethepunishmentofthecross.Jesussaidtohim,“Todayyouwillbewithmeinparadise”.

Mercy … Mercy is the other hand ofcompassion. We feel for another and wearedrawntotaketheirpart.Wereallyanddeeply care - as the good thief did forJesus.“Blessedarethemerciful,”Jesussaidtothecrowd,“fortheyshallobtainmercy,”again as the good thief did. Ponder thevirtueofmercy todayand try toextend ittoanyonearoundyouwhoissufferingorinneed.

OnthisPalmSunday,Jesus, youaregreetedby the crowdwith songsof joy.May I toogreetyouwith loveandpraise.Thecrowdthat cheeredyou, however, turnedagainstyou on Good Friday. May I be your loyalfollower in good ?mes and in bad.Hosanna,Jesus,Iofferpraisetoyou, mayIgive you joy in all that I do today andduring thisHolyWeek.HavemercyonmewhenIfall.Amen.Copyright©2019GPBSeNews,Allrightsreserved. USEDWITHPERMISSION
