The Ilokano Literature and Language Program (ILLP) started in 1972. Since then, it has graduated many students who needed to complete their two-year language core, or for their master’s language requirement. Among these students are those whose ancestors came from the hardy stock of Ilokanos from the plantations. A good number of students are also taking Ilokano as their foreign language requirement.

A large number also take it as their attempt to reclaim their heritage and their way of demonstrating their commitment to the promotion and preservation of the language of their ancestors. In 2002, ILLP started its own Ilokano Language and Culture tract for their Bachelor’s degree in Philippine Language and Culture. Since then, it has graduated 20 students who are ell employed in various organizations and rendering a variety of services: education and teaching, health care, information, social services, and library and information sciences. Some are doing their graduate studies or working for their teacher’s certification program.

Across the years, ILLP has been involved with a variety of language and culture projects, including continuing Community Language Programs with a number of civic and cultural organizations. These programs have been responsible for staging plays aimed to equip the community with the conversational skills in Ilokano and the cultural competencies needed in dealing with the large Ilokano population of the islands. ILLP, in tandem with UH Manoa GEAR UP, has been since involved with the Ilokano Program at Farrington High School in Honolulu since 2002 and Waipahu High School since 2010.

Today, ILLP continues to serve the needs of the State of Hawai’i and the nation. It serves the international community through its linkage with the Nakem Conferences movement.

STAR-SPANGLED BANNERComposed by Francis Scott Key

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

O say does that star-spangled banner yet waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Timpuyog:An Ilokano Language Student organization

Timpuyog is the organization of students enrolled in the various courses offered by the Ilokano Language and

Literature Program at UH Manoa.

These courses cover up to 400-level of Ilokano language, on Philippine critical

discourses, on popular culture, on Philippine drama and performance, on Philippine

cinema, and on the translation and interpretation studies in Ilokano.

Timpuyog aims to bring together these students in these various courses in the effort

to equip them with linguistic and cultural competencies, and to make them aware

of the importance of the Ilokano language in the State of Hawai’i and the history of

Philippine diaspora in particular, with Ilokano itself as historically the language of Filipino

diaspora in the United States of America.

Timpuyog works in tandem with the Ilokano Language and Literature Program

(ILLP), holds fundraisers for the Ilokano B.A. Scholarship, and for its members as

they train for more responsible roles in the community.

Recently the organization has been involved in fiestas, cultural festivals, and relief drives.
