With Monday of this past week we began our two months’ journey through what the Church has named, somewhat unfortunately in my opinion, “Ordinary Time.” In English and in Spanish the word ‘ordinary’ usually means something common, something not at all special. The Latin word from which it is taken, however, refers not to something common, but rather to that which is ordered or numbered. We use the same term when we speak of ordinal numbers, in other words: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, etcetera. So the Sundays of Ordinary Time are identified by their number. This Sunday is the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time occurs between the great Seasons of the Church year which are Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. As you know, Advent and Christmas celebrate that period during which we are anxiously awaiting the Incarnation, the birth of Jesus, and then the time immediately after Christ’s nativity. Lent/Easter is that period when we prepare ourselves through fasting, prayer and acts of charity to celebrate the greatest feast of all, the Paschal feast of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection from the dead. The Scripture readings in Mass during these seasons are focused on those events. On the other hand, during the many weeks of Ordinary Time we have an opportunity to reflect on the ministry of Jesus, his many miracles and cures as well as his preaching of the Kingdom of God. The Old Testament readings in our Lectionary are carefully coordinated with the Gospel readings to show how Jesus’ life and teachings are a fulfillment of God’s ancient covenant with his chosen people. We also read the letters of St. Paul to his communities of converts, letters which offer a profound theological and spiritual background to belief in Jesus Christ as Savior. So there is nothing ordinary about Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time is very much like our own lives. Between the great events that we celebrate or remember in a special way -- our birthdays, our wedding anniversaries, the deaths of our cherished loved ones and so on -- we also must honor the day-to-day, the regular rhythm of work and chores and leisure and sleep. For all of us who do our best to live in Christ and to follow him, there is much that is to be discovered in ordinary time, the precious hours we spend with family and friends, the great good that we can do as Christians simply by being kind to one another, to helping whomever we can, by merely offering, as Jesus says, a cup of cold water to someone who is thirsty. In such ordinary moments our lives are made rich and our souls touch the infinite. Fr. Ulysses

P. Ulises

Dear Community: While I will try in the next week to reply personally to all the many people who wrote Christmas cards to me, who sent me checks or gift cards or who handed me bags with candy or cookies or other kind presents – some with names and addresses, others anonymous -- I don’t want to let even another week go by without expressing my profound gratitude to all of you. I treasure with all my heart this vocation of priesthood that God has given me, and the opportunity to serve in a parish such as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is a great deal of work, to be honest, particularly in these days when the shortage of priests means we have to take on more will less help than in the past. But the love I have felt from so many of my parishioners makes it all worthwhile in every way. May all who read this know of my love and concern for you, the people I’m privileged to serve, and may God bless us all in this coming year and give us peace. Fr. Ulysses
