BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST: GOD WITH US

St. Therese of Lisieux was asked under obedience to write her autobiography when she was diagnosed with Tuberculosis in her early twenties. She writes how she remembers her First Communion at age eleven: “Ah! How sweet was that first kiss of Jesus! It was a kiss of love; I felt that I was loved, and I said: “I love You, and I give myself to You forev-er!” … That day, it was no longer simply a look, it was a fusion; they were no longer two. Therese had vanished as a drop of water is lost in the immensity of the ocean. He was the Master and King of her heart. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Precious Body and Blood of Christ. We also cele-brate this weekend First Communion for a number of our children. We pray that, as St. Therese so beautifully put it, each one may receive from Jesus the kiss of Love that comes from the heart of God. As you and I receive Jesus into our hearts and souls, we in turn live in His own Sacred Heart and Soul. Jesus within us wants to live each day. He has not locked Himself in. Within you and me, He is in the midst of the people of to-day. Jesus is going to meet each person you and I encounter, rich and poor, intelli-gent and ignorant, young and old, saint and sinner. Each one is a person He came to look for, through you and me. Each one he came to save. Each one who speaks to Him, He has a word of reply. Will you and I be His mouthpiece? Will you and I be his heart full of love? How can you and I receive the Kiss of God through Jesus’ Precious Body and Blood? At the Last Supper with His dearest friends, He took bread, broke it and said: “This is my Body.” Then he took the chalice of wine and said: “Take and drink, this is my Blood, poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins.” And now in the year 2020 we are his dearest friends with whom He shares His own Flesh and Blood. What a treasure we have been given! The Eucharist has been called the greatest work of God. His real Pres-ence is the reflection of the wisdom, the immensity and the eternity of God. Yet so humble is His Divine Presence among us. The only thing that shields us from the glory of God which we could not behold in this world and live, is a little flour and water we call the Con-secrated Host. The words of St. Thomas Aquinas in the hymn “ Down In Adoration” say it so well: “Faith will tell us Christ is present, when our human senses fail.” The Eucharist has been called the triumph of the Church and even its very life. It is the fountain of Grace and the magnet for all those who truly seek His presence. No wonder that so many of us have been hungering and thirsting for His loving Presence in our hearts. St. Augustine says it so beautifully what this Feast is all about: “Behold and see what you are, believe what you see, and become what you believe.”

Congratulations to the following students who will be re-ceiving Jesus for the first time in Holy Communion. May they continue to grow in love and appreciation for this special gift received at Mass and may it help them to deepen their connection with Jesus as they continue to

celebrate and worship each weekend.
