CHRIST CHURCHMOTHERS’ UNION12 July 2016 A visit to Rochester

For the July meeting, twelve members visitedRochester Cathedral. We had a very goodhumorous lady guide who gave us an insight intothe history of the Cathedral since its’ foundation in604AD.

She also told us about some of the less wellknown aspects of the Cathedral. At one point shelifted up a carpet to show us part of the 14th

century tiled floor, then she helped us to find thetiles which had been wrongly laid in the choirtransept. We were shown the outline of the originalSaxon Cathedral which is outside the west door.We admired the baptismal fresco which waspainted and dedicated in 2004 to mark the 1400th

anniversary of Christian worship on the site andwe learnt how a fresco is painted. She also pointedout a wooden door dating from the 11th century, the chapter room doorway and a memorial in thenave, constructed from “Coadestone”.

Our guide gave us an account of the lady calledMrs Coade, who in the 18th century perfected aprocess for making an artificial stone which iscalled after her. It was used at BuckinghamPalace, St Georges Chapel Windsor and manymore important sites. A great lady of her timeAt the end of the tour we enjoyed a cream tea inthe Cathedral tea room.Mothers’ Union meetings are open to all andeveryone is welcome, pick up a 2016 programmefrom the back of the church, and come and help uscelebrate 140 years of Mothers’ Union. Do join usfor our fundraising “tea at three” event onWednesday 17 August.

Christians

Against

PovertyOn Monday 25th July Gravesend Deanery opena Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre.Christians Against Poverty is a national debtcounselling charity working through a network ofcentres based in local churches. CAP offers hopeand a solution to anyone in debt through its unique,in-depth Debt Help service.

CAP aims to show God’s love in action byproviding sustainable poverty relief through debtcounselling, advice and practical help. CAP’sunique ‘hands on’ approach empowers people tohelp themselves out of poverty and be releasedfrom the fear, oppression and worry generated byoverwhelming debts. We are providing sustainablepoverty relief as our service teaches clients vitalbudgeting skills that will last a lifetime.

The charity operates through a growing network ofUK debt centres, all opened in partnership with alocal church. CAP began in 1996 when JohnKirkby, armed with a £10 donation, started to helppeople in his local community who were trapped indebt.

The charity is now a fast-paced, growingorganisation whose vision is to answer the national

problem of debt in the UK by having at least oneCAP Debt Centre operating in every major townand city to enable anyone to access its life-changing service.

Carey Laughland is our Debt Centre Manager andthis is her account of her first visit.

"It was to a normal street, neat gardens busilybeing mowed by various neighbours. A had beenreferred by another debt organisation who were nolonger able to help . Having become unemployedand suffered ill health A was now on benefit andwas seriously in debt.

The enormity of the task hit me is, in a very shortspace of time, in this case 2 hours. You learn a lotabout a person both directly and indirectly debtrelated. They have to open to strangers their wholefinancial situation, this may including admittingthey just don’t know who is owed what as variousdebt companies are now involved and they haveadded their fees etc. Most people are in debt for atleast 5 years before reaching out, often they havelived with the “shame” of the situation living adouble life of reality and illusion.

Personal details not normally discussed are, letters and statements collected. I very much feltthe grace of God during the visit, opening the way, easing conversations. No opinions are given, nojudgements, it’s a fine line of impartiality and love.

Support to people like A is needed for our DebtCentre in the form of a prayer team andbefrienders. Each time I visit a client I need to takea befriender, this is someone who will walk thejourneys out of debt with a client, being a friendand showing the love the of God. Maybe sharing askill, taking them out for a pint and a coffee. Abefriender will make three visits with me or about2 hours each across a 6 week period, after that thecontact is very much up to the client andbefriender.

The need is very real in Gravesend and our centrecovers DA11, DA12, DA3, DA4 and DA10. can’tput it better that John Kirkby Founder of CAP andso I’ll end with some words from him.

“I am overwhelmed by what God has done. To seethousands of lives changed every year is trulywonderful. I do believe that God has given us a21st Century answer to one of the most pressingsocial needs within society today. Jesus metpeople's needs with love, compassion andpractical help. Our desire is to simply do the sameand watch the miracles unfold. Please get involvedin this amazing, God inspired ministry.”

If you would like to be a befriender, part of theprayer team ,think you could give occasional timeto help with events or if you would like to make adonation to either the local of national CAP serviceplease contact Carey [email protected]

The 100th Anniversaryof the First Day ofthe Battle of theSomme1st July 1916, remains an important day in thehistory of this country and Veronica and I werevery fortunate to be awarded two tickets in thelottery to join the official commemoration at theThiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Battle.I have previously attended commemorations atThiepval including the 90th, and others in differentparts of France and Belgium, but this was the mostmoving by far.We were on the Somme for five days and in thattime visited some of the 150 cemeteries andmemorials maintained by the Commonwealth WarGraves Commission (CWGC). These ranged fromthe imposing Thiepval Memorial itself, commemorating 72,194 soldiers whose bodiessimply went missing or were unidentified in thecarnage of the six month long Somme battle, including six soldiers commemorated on ChristChurch’s own Memorial. to small roadsidecemeteries often containing fewer than 100graves. Two lasting impressions will stay with us:firstly the enormous and devoted care of theCWGC itself towards the sites, with staff at everycemetery and memorial engaged in preparingthem to be at their best for July 1st. Secondly andmost memorably the number of visitors or ‘pilgrims’we met at every site, most of whom had no ticketsfor any of the Commemoration events, but who justwanted to be there for the Anniversary, each withtheir own story to tell.Of course the focus was the Thiepval Ceremony, which many of you will have watched on television. This took place at a time of high security, combined with a venue in very rural Franceapproached only by narrow roads down which

10,000 visitors had to travel. The solution was veryFrench, with the whole area for miles aroundclosed to road traffic, all visitors making their wayto a single marshalling point at Albert Airport, where security checks were carried out, then bycoach to Thiepval, theoretically a half hour journey. Here we were all supplied with breakfast beforeand a substantial lunch afterwards. We were fortunate to be shown to seats near thefront, where we were witness to an event bothdeeply moving and dramatic, projected on giantscreens for everyone to have a good view of allevents. We were delighted to come across Harryand Evelyn Green also seated in the auditorium. The scene was set with original film recordedduring the Battle accompanied by the BBCSymphony Orchestra. French and British Militarybands played, Guards Regiments marched, aceremonial gun salute by the Royal Horse Artillerygreeting the arrival of the Royal Party and otherdignitaries.

100th Anniversary continued fromprevious page

The ceremony itself will last long in the memory, with an inspirational programme unfolding beforeus. Narrated by Charles Dance, Joely Richardsonand Jason Isaacs, it comprised poignantly chosenmusic and readings, linking back to the battle. Aswell as war poetry, many of the readings werepersonal reminiscences, some delivered bydescendants of the fallen, with footballer SolCampbell reading an eye witness account of thedeath of a member of the Footballer’s Battalion. Allwill remain in the memory, especially a hauntingrendition of ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ by theMorriston Orpheus Choir, accompanied by theBand of the Welsh Guards. The formalCommemoration concluded with Charles Dance’smoving rendition of ‘Aftermath’ by SiegfriedSassoon, ‘Abide With Me’, prayer by theArchbishop of Canterbury, ‘For the Fallen’ and thetwo Minutes Silence, which brought a lump to thethroats of all present.Proceedings continued with the wreath laying, andVeronica and I took the opportunity to place aMemorial Cross at the Thiepval Cross of Sacrifice, commemorating those remembered on the ChristChurch Memorial. These included Percy Doddwhose name is one of those inscribed on theThiepval Memorial, and his brother Frank, bothfamily connections of Harry Kingsbury of ourcongregation. This battle, part of the war to end all wars with itsmillions of victims: the dead, and the wounded -many of who suffered for decades afterwardsincluding both my grandfathers who survived theSomme, but paid a heavy price; and the vastnumbers back home, who lost loved ones, spent alifetime nursing them, or simply had to cope indifferent ways from the shortage of men from thatgeneration……

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Funding announcedfor projects topromote growthand changeNine dioceses will receive a significant cashinjection to support major growth and changeprojects under Renewal and Reform. TheSpending Plans Task Group of the ChurchCommissioners and Archbishops’ Council hasawarded £7.8m to projects from nine diocesesfrom the stream of Strategic DevelopmentFunding, which is to be expanded from 2017 aspart of Renewal and Reform. This is the thirdtranche of Strategic Development Funding to beawarded in the 2014-16 triennium and now bringsthe total allocated through to just under of £15m.The aim of the funding is to complement theformula-based funding distributed to dioceseseach year, so they can benefit from additionalresources to make a significant difference to theirlong-term mission and financial strength, bysupporting major growth and change activity whichfits with dioceses’ strategic plans. Proposals will beevaluated throughout to ensure that learning forthe wider Church can be captured anddisseminated, complementing the new process ofdiocesan Peer Review, which is also a key part ofRenewal and Reform. The funding was awardedafter a competitive process, in which dioceseswere invited to put forward initial applications to theTask Group. Those proposals which were judgedto meet the criteria most strongly were invited tosubmit detailed project plans. Thirteen applicationswere received in the first stage, of which eight wereinvited forward to the second stage, together withone which had undertaken further work on itsproject plan. All nine projects

have subsequently been awarded funding, complementing the dioceses’ own investment inthe work being supported. John Spence, chair ofthe Archbishops’ Council Finance Committee, said: “I’m delighted that the Archbishops’ Counciland Church Commissioners have been able tosupport some exciting proposals, and help thesedioceses turn their strategic plans into reality”

Government support for vulnerablechurch buildings welcomed

Nearly 300 Church of England parishes are toreceive grants for urgent repairs to their churchroofs in the second round of awards from theListed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund.Awards between £10,000 and £100,000 havebeen offered towards the urgent repair of roofs, gutters and drains, failure of which is the principalcause of decay in historic churches. In total, 401listed places of worship will benefit from awardsfrom the £25 million funding package given by theTreasury. This follows the 501 awards announcedin the first round in Spring 2015..Visiting St Philip & St James, Hallow, constructionof which was partly funded originally by Lea &Perrins, makers of Worcestershire sauce, theBishop of Worcester, Dr John Inge, lead bishop forcathedrals and church buildings said: “Thesegrants will be an enormous help to churchcommunities who take care of some of thiscountry’s most precious built heritage. It is verygood that the Government has recognised thathelp is needed.”The Fund, administered by the National HeritageMemorial Fund (NHMF) on behalf of theDepartment for Culture, Media and Sport, wasannounced by George Osborne in the 2014Autumn Statement and subsequently extended fora second round due to heavy oversubscription.Overall, the Treasury has allocated £55 million tothe scheme.
