Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A Reflection on Family Trees

by Bill Kramer Life, Justice, and Peace Committee

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.” Romans 8: 14-17 Searching for one’s ancestral roots has become a popular pastime for many. Most of us have some curiosity about who our forbearers were and where they came from. For most people, it is a healthy curiosity, but it can also be an ego trip. The nativist movement of the 1840’s lorded it over the immigrants from Ireland and central Europe and lobbied for their exclusion from the society of “true” Americans. The “My ancestors came over on the Mayflower” syndrome. I once attended a parish retreat in which the retreat master opened his very first homily by reading aloud the entire genealogy of Jesus from the opening chapter of Matthew’s Gospel! He must be kidding, I thought. How many times can you hear the phrase “became the father of” and still stay awake? But in fact the genealogy of Jesus contained a profound message, as the retreat master pointed out. The message lay simply in the astonishing diversity of Jesus’ human ancestors, which included pagans as well as Jews, farmers as well as kings and patriarchs, sinners as well as saints, and how God’s plan for his people was able to work through such diversity. Just as God filled the natural world with incredible beauty and variety, so he also fashioned us, each of us different but at the same time each of us created in his image and likeness.

So it really doesn’t matter whether our ancestors came over on the Mayflower or from the slums of Dublin or from an African slave ship. As Saint Paul wrote, “we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.”
