Reflection Jesus came to give us back our selves, our truth, His truth within us. Perhaps we listen to “old” voices whose sounds are so familiar that they drown out “new” voices which are like newly-purchase shoes and are not comfortable when first tried on. When Jesus prays, “Be open” He is speaking both of the physical and interior ears. He is speaking of how the man can listen to what he now is free to speak having had his mouth opened as well. He is invited to be open to what Jesus is saying about his past, present and future. We are primarily who God has said we are. In Christ we take time to hear it over and over again. In prayer, in the Sacraments, we are invited to be “open” to our true selves and name.

Grade 8 students led first Sunday Mass

What a refreshing sight to see so many children attended the 9:00 AM Mass on Sunday, September 2, 2018. Led by the Class of 2019, the students read, sang, and carried the gifts to the altar. Children have always been called by Jesus to pray, worship, and be taught how to give thanks to God. Fr. Tomas Burke, C.Ss.R., pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, encourages the participation of children not only in their Friday school-led Mass but also during Sunday liturgy. By their regular attendance at Mass, children are welcomed and are taught to pray with the congregation as well as to learn the practice of quiet meditation, away from technology and the fast paced world around them.

Let us pray for our school children that they may continue to grow in the knowledge and love of God.

SH Faculty engaged in high-level Professional Development “Data Day” Friday, October 31, 2018 was Professional Development Day, commonly known as PD day, not only for Sacred Heart Catholic School faculty but also around the Orlando Diocese schools. At Sacred Heart School, principal Mrs. Shelley Niswonger led the faculty into exploring and analyzing data from ITBS test scores and performance instruments compiled by Resource Teacher Mrs. Peggy Zelenty. The day started early with fun ice breakers from Math teacher Mrs. Diane Halsema, followed by discussion and analysis of student performances based on all instruments and student data from previous year. The morning collaboration was wrapped up with goals and

action plans that will inspire student curiosity, implement a more challenging academic environment, and promote critical and creative thinking among students. In the afternoon, teachers collaborated, prepared lesson plans, and shared cross-curricular lesson planning strategies. It was a packed day for the faculty! Fr. Tom Burke, C.Ss.R., pastor, visited to say hello to the staff.

May God continue to bless our teachers and may they look to

Jesus, the greatest teacher, always!

Faith, Prayer & Ministry News

Celebrate with Vincentian ministers and volunteers on September 16

We are a network of friends, inspired by gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need. St. Vincent

de Paul members from Sacred Heart & St. Gerard’s churches are gathering on September 16 at 10:00 a.m. for Mass at St. Gerard’s Church. We are wearing blue SVdP shirts and sitting together as a group in friendship and devotion to our founders whose feast days are September 9 (Blessed Freder-ick Ozanam) and September 27 (St. Vincent de Paul). Our spiritual advisor, Deacon Lou Bar-tos, has honored us to speak about St. Vincent and our work. After Mass, the congregation is invited to join us for brunch in the Gathering Place.

WE BID A FOND FAREWELL- To Carol Hummel and her husband Jake as they relocate to Colorado to be closer to their family.

The Hummel's moved to New Smyrna in 1989 from St. Louis, Missouri.

They joined Sacred Heart Church soon after and it didn’t take Carol long to become active at the Parish. As a member of the CCW, Carol served a President and headed

many committees over the years, including coordinating luncheons for the homeless and helping with CCW Card Parties. She helped with the annual Mothers Day Baby Shower delivering gifts to Grace House. Carol made it a priority to attend the CCW

Conference held yearly at Lake Yale.

Carol also served on the Bereavement Committee’s Reception team and could always be depended on to lend a hand setting and cleaning up and bringing bake goods. As an ardent Pro Life supporter, Carol led Wednesday’s Rosary Group at an abortion clinic in Daytona and was very happy and proud when it was shut down. She also led, along with her husband Jake, annual Right to Life Chain in front of Sacred Heart Church.

Carol and Jake were regular Mass attendees and we will miss their familiar faces. We wish them well as they embark on their adventure and extend Happy Anniversary wishes to them as they celebrate 57 years of Marriage in October.

May the Lord continue to Bless them.

Lord God almighty,

bless our grandparents with long life, happiness, and health.

May they remain constant in your love and be living signs of your

Presence to their children and grandchildren.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Celebrates two historical events: the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, in 320 under the temple of Venus in Jerusalem, and the dedication in 335 of the basilica and shrine built on Calvary by Constantine, which mark the site of the Crucifixion. The basilica, named the Martyrium, and the shrine, named the Calvarium, were destroyed by the Persians in 614. The Church of the Holy sepulcher which now stands on the site was built by the crusaders in 1149.However the feast, more than anything else, is a celebration and commemoration of God's greatest work: his salvific death on the Cross and His Resurrection, through which death was defeated and the doors to Heaven opened. The entrance antiphon for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is: "We should glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, for he is our salvation, our life and our resurrection: through him we are saved and made free."

St. Gerard’s is desperately in need of Ushers.

We are blessed with a very spiritual atmosphere because of all parishioners. Now we have a need for men and women to volunteer to be Ushers to help keep our Mass running smoothly and reverently.

We would like Ushers at both doors for every Mass, to be able to welcome everyone to St. Gerard’s personally, and we need your help to do it. Please help us to continue our spiritual atmosphere so that all parishioners will benefit.

Heavenly Father, we could never thank our military men & women Policeman, fireman and 1st Responders enough for their courageous service and sacrifice to our country and its people. Show

“There are different gifts but the same Spirit, there are different ministries but the

same Lord . . . To each person the manifestation of the spirit is given for the

common good.” Every person is called to contribute to the liturgy in a manner suited to his or her unique talents. It takes the help of many people serving in a variety of different liturgical ministries to help the liturgy flow smoothly and enable the participation of the assembly. At the present time, there is a serious need for volunteers in all ministries at St. Gerard’s. We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the gifts God has given you and consider volunteering your talents for one of our ministries.

Training: Training is provided to help you get started in all the listed ministries.

Scheduling: Liturgical ministers are scheduled at the Mass time of their preference as often as fits their schedule and are asked to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled Mass begins.

Contact: Please see the list of ministries below. Call the leader of the ministry you are interested in to volunteer or for further information.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR

MINISTRIES AT ST. GERARD’S

WE NEED YOUR HELP . . . To keep the Sacred Heart & St. Gerard roster up to date-

In order to better serve our parish we strive to maintain a church roster that is as accurate as possible. We ask that our registered parishioners call the parish office at 386-428-6426 to inform us when changes to your information occur including name, address, telephone number, a move out of the parish, the death of a family member who is a registered parishioner, etc. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

ALUMINUM POP TAB COLLECTION

The POP TAB collection period for 2018 – 2019 is in full swing, and I reach out again to all of you who savor that special libation, that sports an aluminum POP TAB, to please save it for the Ronald McDonald houses in Orlando. They depend greatly on these

yearly collections, donated by the schools participating in their program. These collections help offset the cost to shelter, comfort and care for the families as they wait for their child to be cared for. Our collection of POP TABS, combined with the POP TABS collected by the families and friends of Chisholm Elementary School in NSB, weighed-in at 122 lbs this past collection period. That’s a lot of POP TABS. There’s a picture of the POP TAB collection on the bulletin board in the vestibule at St. Gerard. Check it out!

Thank you again and God Bless.
