Parish Newsletter 7th / 8th January 2017 Baptism of the Lord "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?" Jesus didn't need to be washed clean of any sin, and John the Baptist knew it. But nonetheless, Jesus was humble enough to be baptized like the rest of us. This humility is at the heart of Jesus' mission on earth. As Saint Paul says, Jesus "emptied him- self...coming in human likeness...he humbled him- self" (Phil 2:7-8). He did not need to become hu- man, to be born of a woman into a poor family, or to suffer and die on the cross. Rather, Jesus freely chose to do all of these things out of love for us. And in the process, he gave us a model to follow. By being baptized, Jesus emphasized the im- portance of participating in this sacred action. And later in his ministry, he confirmed the significance of baptism when he instructed his apostles to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28:19). Through baptism, we become disciples of Jesus. As baptized Christians, we are both called and equipped to be Christ's followers, his pupils, and his friends. Today, we might ask ourselves if we are embrac- ing this calling wholeheartedly. Do we follow Je- sus' example of love for God and neighbour? Do we study his word and live by his teaching? Do we nurture our relationship with him, as we would with any friend? Jesus humbled himself for our sake. Let us show our gratitude by being his faith- ful disciples today and every day UNWANTED CHRISTMAS GIFTS WANTED: Gifts such as games, clothing, hats, scarves and toiletries wanted by Crosscare for the homeless. Staff in Dublins Pro Cathedral are ap- pealing to the public to donate unwanted presents to homeless people. The unwanted gifts are taken into storage by Crosscare – the social care agency of the Dublin Diocese – who redistribute them as gifts to people in their homeless and residential projects this time next year. People can leave their unwanted gifts at the crib in St Marys Pro Cathedral from now until 15th January. THANK YOU HAPPY NEW YEAR: Fr. John, Fr. Denis and Fr. Baptism of the Lord

"I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?" Jesus didn't need to be washed clean of any sin, and John the Baptist knew it. But nonetheless, Jesus was humble enough to be baptized like the rest of us.

This humility is at the heart of Jesus' mission on earth. As Saint Paul says, Jesus "emptied him-self...coming in human likeness...he humbled him-self" (Phil 2:7-8). He did not need to become hu-man, to be born of a woman into a poor family, or to suffer and die on the cross. Rather, Jesus freely chose to do all of these things out of love for us. And in the process, he gave us a model to follow.

By being baptized, Jesus emphasized the im-portance of participating in this sacred action.

Today, we might ask ourselves if we are embrac-ing this calling wholeheartedly. Do we follow Je-sus' example of love for God and neighbour? Do we study his word and live by his teaching? Do we nurture our relationship with him, as we would with any friend? Jesus humbled himself for our sake. Let us show our gratitude by being his faith-ful disciples today and every day

FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF JESUS: This baptism was a very public one and was recorded for all generations to know about and understand, and it is important for several reasons. First, it pictures His death and resurrection. Second, it symbolizes the believer’s identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. Third, it marks His first public identification with those whose sins He would bear. Fourth, the event was a public affirmation of His Messiahship by the testimony that came directly from heaven. Water baptism is used as a way to identify. In Jesus’ day, when a Gentile would convert to Judaism, he would have to be publicly baptized to identify him as a convert. Obviously, Jesus was not converting to anything. Jesus’ baptism was an identification of Jesus with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus was baptized to publicly announce Himself as God’s Son, and to pronounce the beginning of His ministry with the Holy Spirit’s power. Jesus did not “need” the Holy Spirit. However, to set an example for us, Jesus emptied Himself and relied upon the Holy Spirit’s power. Jesus' baptism and reliance upon the Holy Spirit is an example that we are to follow in our own lives.

CHRISTMAS OFFERING ENVELOPES: A big thank you to all who have returned the Christmas Offering envelopes. If you’ve not had the opportunity and would like to make an offering envelopes are available at the back of the church. The Christmas Offering goes to help support the priests in the Diocese and the Parish. Thank you for your prayers and continued support, especially at this time.

EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT: Takes place every Sunday afternoon from 3pm - 6pm in Holy Rosary Church and every Thursday after 10 am Mass until 11:30, except if there’s

a funeral. Exposition in St. Kilian’s Church each Monday 7am -10pm and each Wednesday 7am - 1pm. All are welcome.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY 2015 will be observed from 18th January to the 25th January. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is a privileged moment of prayer, encounter and dialogue. It is an opportunity to recognise the

richness and value that are present in the other, the different and to ask God for the gift of unity.

IRISH COUNTRYWOMAN’S ASSOCIATION, Delgany Guild, will hold their First Guild Meeting of 2017 in St. Patrick's worship and recreation centre, Church Road, Greystones, at 8pm on Monday 9th January 2017.

RELIGION IN SCHOOL: Religious education is transmitting a holistic world view with very sound values that underpin a lot of the stuff that is valuable in our society, according to Seamus Mulconry, general secretary of the Catholic Primary Schools Management Association (CPSMA).

Mr Mulconry was responding to a proposal to take religion out of the core primary school curriculum. The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) has proposed that the ‘core’ curriculum should be a minimum of 60 per cent of each school day, dealing with maths, English and Irish. The other 40 per cent of the day, designated ‘flexible time’, would be for roll call, assembly, breaks, and discretionary curriculum time, including the school patron’s religious programme.

Agreeing that there was a problem of curriculum overload in primary schools, Mr Mulconry said that abolishing religion was not the answer and consultations on the issue should not be “obsessed” with religious education.

“We don’t think any consultation should be obsessed with religion,” he told the Irish Times. “We think there should be an objective appraisal of what the issues are and not simply a focus on one thing.”

“Religious education is transmitting a holistic world view with very sound values that underpin a lot of the stuff that is valuable in our society. When people are thinking of cutting it down or dumping it they need to do some very, very serious thinking. It defeats the purpose really of having a faith-based school if they can’t have religious education as part of the core curriculum.” The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment consultations will run through the spring of 2017.

LUISNE ON THE MOVE! From 23rd January Luisne courses will be run from the Kilcoole Community Centre. Meditation and prayer will continue at the convent for

January and February. For new booking arrangements please see www.luisne.ie. Early booking is a priority. ANAM CARA, the organisation that supports bereaved parents, is holding its next Parent Evening on Mon 9th Jan from 19:30 to 21:00 in the Glashaus Hotel, Belgard Square West, Tallaght, Dublin 24 (please note change of venue). This event is open to all bereaved parents regardless of the age your child died, the circumstances of their death, or whether the death was recent or not.
