Introduction

It’s an exciting time in the life of Cheam Parish which is a Team Ministry blessed with three churches: The Parish Church of St Dunstan, St Alban-the-Martyr and St Oswald’s, each with its own distinct character and style.

We are looking for a creative and visionary leader who will help us discern and grow our mission and ministry. Someone who will embrace and manage change, facilitating growth and development across the Parish. An inspiring and collaborative leader, who will nurture and unlock the considerable potential in people for the broad and diverse range of ministries and mission activities that our Parish and each church needs to venture into growth. We look enthusiastically towards growing our mission and ministry.

What we offer:

• An attractive opportunity to lead a Parish comprising three complementary and different churches with friendly, supportive and generous congregations, PCC and DCCs.

• A committed ministry team, comprising clergy and lay ministers. • Parish administration.

A very warm welcome awaits you in Cheam, which is located on the south-west London/Surrey border in the London Borough of Sutton. The Parish is in Sutton Deanery, part of the Croydon Archdeaconry and Episcopal Area in the Diocese of Southwark.

The Area Cheam is on the South-western border of Greater London, adjoining Surrey. It is a constituent part of the London Borough of Sutton. The parliamentary constituency is Sutton and Cheam. A settlement since Anglo Saxon times, Cheam is recorded in the Domesday Book. Its charter dates from the 13th century. Henry VIII built his extravagant Nonsuch Palace in what is now Nonsuch Park. A rural village until the arrival of the railways and the motor car, the character of the area changed dramatically in the 20th century. Cheam has retained its suburban village character, surrounded by substantial suburban housing development and North Cheam retail and residential area. For further information please see ‘About the Parish’.

‘The thing I love most about Cheam is …’ We asked our congregations and this is what they said:

… the welcoming, friendly atmosphere; … its sense of community; … the mix of ages, long-established residents and plenty of young families

and children; … unpretentious people; … excellent facilities all within walking distance; … a safe place – almost crime free; … excellent public transport – central to all areas; … its village atmosphere, situated on the edge of Greater South West London; … Nonsuch Park; … its history.

The Parish boundary and area of ministry: Cheam is mentioned in the Domesday book and St Dunstan’s was serving the community at that time. It is still the Parish church, serving the village and south of the Parish. As Cheam grew in the twentieth century, St Alban’s and St Oswald’s were built to serve the newly emerging communities. Each church serves a distinct area and has its own style, strengths and character. The churches are located as follows:

• the Parish Church of St Dunstan’s, located in Cheam Village

• St Alban-the-Martyr serves the north-east of the Parish, and

• St Oswald’s serves the northern end of the Parish.

The Diocese of Southwark and Deanery of Sutton The Cheam Team Ministry is part of the Deanery of Sutton which is in the Croydon Archdeaconry and Episcopal Area, in the Diocese of Southwark.

The Diocese of Southwark The Diocese of Southwark is one of the 42 dioceses of the Church of England. We are in the Province of Canterbury and are part of the worldwide Anglican Communion which has nearly 70 million members. The Diocese of Southwark is twinned with three Anglican Dioceses in Zimbabwe. The Croydon Episcopal Area is twinned with Central Zimbabwe Diocese, the Woolwich Area with Manicaland and the Kingston Area with Matabeleland. The Diocese, which was founded in 1905, covers South London and East Surrey. The area of London north of the River Thames is served by the Diocese of London. The Diocese is divided into three Episcopal Areas - Croydon, Kingston and Woolwich - each with an Area Bishop, two Archdeacons and a team of clergy and laity who carry out various roles relating to vocations, minority ethnic Anglican concerns, women’s ministry and readers. Southwark Cathedral is on the River Thames near to London Bridge, and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

The Diocese of Southwark serves the 2.8 million people in the 16 Local Authorities of South London and East Surrey through 356 places of worship – a Church of England presence in every community – and 106 church schools educating over 37,000 young people. Area: 317 square miles Parishes: 293 Churches: 356 (190 listed)

Terms of the Appointment The role of Rector for the Cheam Team Ministry became vacant following the appointment of the Revd Canon Darren Miller as Archdeacon of Ashford, Kent in January 2018. The appointment of Rector for the Cheam Team Ministry is made under the Ecclesiastical Offices (Terms of Service) Regulations 2009, under which the post will be held under common tenure. The stipend is paid on the Diocesan Scale for Incumbents. The Parish has a concern for the health, well-being, personal and professional development of its priests, with the expectation, that:

• all legitimate working clergy expenses are paid in full; • proper holidays and days off are taken; • time for training (CME), reading weeks, personal development, retreat

and academic study is also supported. The Rectory

The Rectory is situated in a quiet road less than five minutes’ walk from St Dunstan’s Parish Church.

Built in 1999, the Rectory is a detached house with integral garage of brick construction, comprising four bedrooms, two bathrooms, lounge, dining room, separate study, kitchen, utility room and downstairs cloakroom. The property has all main services, including gas central heating. There is a lawned garden to the rear and landscaped garden to the front with a short driveway and path. It was most recently inspected in January 2018.

Nonsuch Park is home to Nonsuch Mansion, a popular wedding venue. Parts of Cheam Village and Cheam Park are in a conservation area.

Whitehall Park Lane The Library is adjacent to St Dunstan’s Church in Cheam Village, which is next to the village War Memorial.

Cheam War Memorial The Royal British Legion, Cheam Branch North Cheam centre is 1 mile north of Cheam Village. Within the area there is a large Sainsbury's supermarket with adjoining café and neighbouring park, a number of independent shops, restaurants, cafés and a post office. Subject to planning, the site of a 1960s building, Victoria House, at the North Cheam crossroad, is to be redeveloped, expanding commercial and residential property. Having been derelict for some years it is very much in need of renewal. The northern boundary of the Parish is marked by the London Road, designated the A24, with neighbouring areas of Worcester Park to the north-west and Morden to the north-east, Sutton to the east, Ewell to the west and Belmont and Banstead to the south. Cheam has a population of about 26,000, the demography of which is changing. Education and Schools St Dunstan’s, Cheam, C of E Primary School St Dunstan’s Primary School is a larger than average, voluntary aided Church of England primary school with a maximum of 488 children on roll. The most recent

OFSTED Inspection (July 2017) judged the school to be ‘good’ and the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) in January 2018 validated the school as ‘outstanding’. The school serves an intake of predominantly White British families in Cheam, although there are an increasing number of pupils from a variety of ethnic groups. The Team Rector is an ex-officio member of the Board of Governors. There are very close and supportive links with the Parish of

Cheam, especially St Dunstan’s Church. The Headteacher and Rector work in close partnership. The school also has very effective and mutually supportive links and relationships with the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education and the London Borough of Sutton. The leadership and management of the school provide an exceptionally clear vision to create and maintain an outstanding church school, giving a very decisive Christian direction to the school which is held in high regard by the community. Christian values and the mission statement underpin all policies. Mission Statement St Dunstan’s - excellence in Christian education ‘Our School fosters a Christian ethos and provides a high quality of care and education for every member of the school community. Christian values are promoted through the whole curriculum. We aim to motivate everyone to engage fully in the broad range of educational opportunities provided to develop their potential. We encourage all our pupils to achieve high standards and to grow as happy, confident, compassionate, independent young people who show respect for others, have a desire to learn and who are eager to make positive and caring contributions to the wider community, its people and environment.’

15

The school would particularly value a Team Rector who:

• Will engage with staff, children and families from diverse backgrounds, offering pastoral care and support for the whole school community.

• Will be an active, ex-officio member of the Board of Governors who will regularly visit the school, lead acts of collective worship and contribute a depth of knowledge and experience through the Faith Group and to the RE curriculum.

• Is approachable, kind, understanding, enthusiastic, resilient and a critical friend to the Headteacher, leadership team, staff and pupils.

• Will actively seek and encourage ways of further integrating school with the local church through, for example, worship events in school and church, music and/or the arts.

Please see Appendix 1 for more details and the school website: http://www.stdunstans.sutton.sch.uk Other Education links: There are a number of other schools, pre-schools and nurseries in the Parish and wider area, the church having links with some through its clergy and use of its church buildings, including Cheam Park Farm Nursery and Primary Academy, Cheam Fields Primary, Westbourne Primary and Little Oaks Pre-school Nursery Forest School. Secondary Schools include Cheam High School, a large mixed comprehensive school and Nonsuch High School, a selective school for girls. St Raphael’s Hospice St Raphael’s Hospice is in North Cheam on the boundary with Worchester Park. It offers hospice care to people with life-limiting illness living in the boroughs of Merton and Sutton (predominantly Wimbledon, Merton, Sutton and Cheam). The service includes high-quality medical and nursing interventions, as well as support to family and friends. The Hospice fully recognises and respects cultural, ethnic and religious differences and patients of all faiths or none are welcome at St Raphael’s. The multidisciplinary team do everything possible to relieve symptoms, sustain quality of life, support end of life care and care after death. Hospice care is tailored to individual needs. Hospice services include:

• Specialist care provided by doctors and nurses • Care at home or in the Hospice, out-patient clinics • Day therapy (Jubilee Centre) – social/creative opportunities, as well as

access to complementary therapies • Support for family/children/friends • Spiritual support • Counselling and Bereavement support

Cheam Team Ministry has an active role in the Chaplaincy Service, taking a once a week Eucharist in the Hospice Chapel and visiting residents and those in the day centre.

Worship, Liturgy and annual services The Eucharist is celebrated at each of our churches as the main Sunday Worship using Common Worship Order 1, which is also used at some of our mid-week services. The Book of Common Prayer Eucharist is used at the 8am Sunday and Wednesday mid-week services at St Dunstan’s. For a full schedule of services across the Parish please see ‘Our Regular Services and Activities’. Evensong is held on the first, third and fourth Sundays of each month, with a quiet reflective service of Compline available on the second Sunday. The Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the Aumbry at each of our churches. Crucifer and acolytes lead processions at the Entrance, Gospel and Recession and there are very

17

experienced Sacristans and well-supported teams of servers at each church. Intercessions and Lectionary readings are lay lead, with the Gospel being read by Clergy or lay-Reader. Prayer for Healing is offered once a month at the main Sunday Eucharist at St Dunstan’s and at mid-week services at St Alban’s and St Oswald’s. Baptisms normally take place on Sunday afternoons, as separate services to the main worship. They may also take place from time-to-time during the main Sunday morning worship at each of our churches. Baptism and wedding enquiries are taken during ‘Office Hour’ – a surgery-style session held at the Parish Office on the first and third Saturdays of the month, with Wedding Preparation taking place on a Saturday morning or mid-week evening. Holy Week is kept in full and, in addition to our own services, a number of Christmas services and concerts are held in our churches for local schools and nurseries. Cheam's main Remembrance service, which includes the Uniformed Scouting and Guiding Associations, and the Parish’s annual bereavement service are held at St Dunstan’s. Children and young people There are well-established Sunday Schools at each of our three churches. They meet during term-time only during the main Sunday worship. Lead by teams of dedicated and hardworking leaders and helpers, they are currently exploring resources from ‘ROOTS’ Children and Young People for use at each session. The Uniformed Scout and Guide groups have connections with our churches, attending ‘All Age’ worship events for particular seasons of the year. St Dunstan’s hosts the Guides’ annual ‘Thinking Day’ Service in February each year. We are looking towards ways of developing our provision for children, families and young people and have a Parish Messy Church starting in June 2018, after which it will ‘tour’ the Parish with quarterly season events. We are also currently exploring provision for a Parish Youth Group, with plans for it to meet bi-weekly on a Sunday afternoon at St Oswald’s Church. The setting up of parent/carer and baby/toddler groups at St Oswald’s and St Alban’s Churches are also planned for 2018. The Music Programme The Parish has always had a very strong music tradition. Music in worship is lead by our RSCM-affiliated robed choirs of mixed voices. The musical genres and styles of each church are very similar. We have three very talented Music Directors at each of our churches, who work hard to develop each of their choirs and music. Each choir provides a good lead for our main Sunday acts of worship, which usually includes an anthem, leading hymnody and a sung Mass setting. The music strongly enhances and reflects the seasons of the church year. We are also blessed with other organists and musicians who provide cover for the Music Directors and lead other events, for example, regular music recitals. St Dunstan's

Page 18: Parish of Cheam Profile FINAL V1.0 - Anglican Diocese of … · 2018-07-31 · 3 Introduction It’s an exciting time in the life of Cheam Parish which is a Team Ministry blessed

18

maintains a deputy organist post and a small but enthusiastic Mothers’ Union choir who sing typically on the first Sunday in the month, not least to give the church choir a regular break. Our organists will play for funerals and at St Dunstan’s Church are supported mid-week, subject to availability, by the Mothers’ Union Choir. In terms of shared choral events, the choirs are invited to St Dunstan's for a Good Friday performance of usually a Requiem, and to Nine Lessons and Carols on Advent 4, and to St Alban's for an Advent ‘Carols by Candlelight’ service. Overall, whilst proud of our musical roots, the challenges being faced by the Music Director at St Dunstan’s and even more so at St Oswald’s and St Alban’s churches, get greater, primarily with the lack of suitable ages in the congregations from which to recruit new membership. This is something a new Rector will need a vision for. The Music Director of St Dunstan's Church maintains strong links to St Dunstan's School but the challenges of recruiting have become more so with changes to modern family life. Membership of the choirs is at its strongest when the congregations from which they draw have a wide age profile. Shared events The Parish used to enjoy regular joint choral events; however, these have diminished in recent years due in part to the low numbers in St Alban’s and St Oswald’s choirs. There are some attempts for our three churches to join forces from time to time, not only in music but for courses, prayer groups, fundraising and social events too, but rarely in the past have Parish/Team events been successful in bringing the churches together. The exception to this is the Children's Good Friday Easter Workshop which is very well attended. The congregations have in the past had a tendency not to mix, perhaps due to a perceived diversity, rather than focusing on the things that are shared and which we hold in common. Christian Education Programme The learning opportunities made available during the past 3 years have included Admission to Communion for Year 3 children and above attending St Dunstan’s Primary School, Confirmation classes for young people and adults and seasonal courses in Advent and Lent, attracting those already connected with the church. It would be good to develop the programme to include courses or events to attract newcomers. Pastoral Ministry Our Southwark Pastoral Auxiliary has many years’ experience living and working in the Parish. There are a small number of people who assist with ministry to the sick, house-bound and elderly, taking home Communion and following up on funeral visiting. Expansion of the pastoral ministry team is something that needs to be developed as a forthcoming priority.

19

Spiritual Development and Renewal There is an annual pilgrimage to Walsingham, usually in April each year. The Parish has visited Greece, Turkey and most recently Malta. Occasional quiet days are held in the Parish, together with those run by the Diocese and within the Deanery and Episcopal area. Prayer Life There are four prayer groups that meet regularly in church, house groups and at St Dunstan’s Primary School. Parish Structure, Governance, Organisation, Finance and Communication Good governance is key and provides a clear framework allowing the Parish to function and fulfil its statutory and compliance obligations. The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is the decision-making and statutory recognised body of the Cheam Team Ministry. Under Church Representation Rules, the Annual Accounts are presented by the PCC, having previously been passed by each church’s District Church Council (DCC). The PCC is a registered charity, number 1134780. Members of the DCCs are either ex officio or elected by the Annual District Church Meeting or Annual Parochial Church Meeting in accordance with the Church Representation Rules. The PCC operates through the DCCs, which meet between full meetings of the PCC. The PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the Team Rector, in promoting the whole mission of the church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. It also has the maintenance responsibilities for the Parish’s property. The Financial Statement of the Parochial Church Council for the year ended 31 December 2016 is given in Appendix 4. Parish Support Fund Since January 2016, parishes have been invited to support the shared responsibilities we have as a Diocese by making a pledge to the Parish Support Fund. Parishes make a pledge (that is a commitment to pay a certain amount for the year) which is realistic, challenging and generous. Giving provides the resources for mission and ministry in every parish in our Diocese. PCCs across the Diocese are responsible and accountable to each other for how much they give. An information pack to help parishes consider their pledge is issued annually to all PCC Secretaries, Treasurers and Clergy. It includes an information sheet, specific to Cheam Team Ministry, showing the indicative costs of ministry for the parish. The Parish then considers its budget and pledges by the end of June each year, a realistic, challenging and generous sum for the forthcoming year.

Church Halls The Parish and its churches own and manage three church halls. Each is managed by a Hall Management Committee, with a Booking Secretary for each. More details are given below. Separate finance and accounts are kept for each and incorporated overall into the Parish Accounts. ‘Curate’s House’ in Cheam Village This property is currently let, providing valuable additional income to the Parish. The Parish will need to consider the position if the house is required as home for a Curate in future. The Vicarage, North Cheam The Vicarage, currently the home of the Mission Priest, is located next door to St Oswald’s Church. It was completed in late 2015 and is in good decorative order and maintenance. Communication ‘The Week’, a weekly-bulletin news-sheet publishes to subscribers via Mailchimp and gives congregations full Lectionary readings and details of church and Parish events. There is a monthly magazine called ‘Yours Faithfully’ funded through advertising and subscription. The Parish website is currently under review with plans to upgrade as soon as possible. The Parish has a Facebook and Twitter Account. After a period of inactivity, we are in the process of reconvening the Communications Group to look at our information streams and how we can improve and standardise our communications and overall reach. ‘The thing I love most about church is … ‘ We asked our congregations and this is what they said:

… fellowship and worship; … all welcoming, loving and friendly; … stability and friendship; … peace and tranquillity when you need it most; … it is my soul; … beauty and tradition; … ritual; … sense of continuity; … the quiet, peace and tranquillity of the 8am service on a Sunday morning; … where the family of Jesus meet and share in the life-enhancing

whether it succeeds – it tries its best.

Parish Ministry Team

The Mission Priest was appointed in July 2016 with incumbent status as Team Vicar for St Alban-the-Martyr and St Oswald’s Churches (two of the three churches in Cheam Team Ministry). The focus and priority of the Mission Priest’s role is the development of St Oswald’s and St Alban’s churches linking them to the needs of each of the local communities, in the context of the Parish’s overall mission. The Assistant Curate (PTO) has ministered in the Parish on a part-time self-supporting basis for many years, regularly taking main Sunday Services and some weekday cover, occasional Offices (Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals) and has particular responsibility for leading St Alban’s Friday Drop-In, having founded the group fourteen years ago and leading a team of dedicated helpers. The group attracts some fifty or so people to the church on a bi-weekly basis. The Parish has two retired clergy who, when available to do so, also assist with services and very occasionally funerals too.

The Parish Office is open Tuesday to Friday mornings and is managed by a very competent Parish Administrator with many years’ experience both in the Parish and in related sectors too (including education and health). Training Parish - the Parish has a tradition of being a training parish and has helped shape and form many curates over the years. Although not essential, the Parish would like to continue this tradition. There is provision for a Curate’s home, which is currently let. Review by the PCC of the financial impact of any decision would be needed in advance.

The Parish Church of St Dunstan In the 1990s, the Parish of Cheam was reorganised into a Team Ministry, led by the Rector based at St Dunstan’s Church in Cheam village. It is by tradition the focal point for civic worship in Cheam; this includes the annual Service of

Remembrance and the opening of the annual Charter Fair in May. We observe Holy Week in full and at Christmas there are a variety of services for the whole community of Cheam. The main Sunday Service (CW Order 1) is at 9.30am. This is a family-friendly choral service with a regular attendance of 100-140. The Sunday School which is concurrent with the service during term time is attended by between 6 and 16 children aged from 4-10 years. They are currently introducing resources from ROOTS (children and young people). The churches in our Parish are planning to hold a Messy Church touring each of the churches during the coming year. The first will be held at St Dunstan’s. The 8am BCP Eucharist accommodates those parishioners who prefer a quieter more contemplative service. The 6pm

services on Sunday evenings include Evensong and a monthly ‘Reflect’ quiet service. The main weekday services are silent prayer on a Monday evening, CW1 Eucharist on Tuesday morning and BCP Eucharist on Wednesday morning.

The very youngest members of our congregation meet for Tiny Tots on a Tuesday afternoon. Babies and pre-school children with their parents or carers meet for play and a short service followed by refreshments. The Parish Support Group supports the families of the recently deceased across the Parish; those in mourning are also encouraged to attend the annual bereavement service in October. A house group meets monthly to share their thoughts and ideas on a variety of topics supported by prayer. Two prayer groups meet monthly on Monday afternoons. The Parish undertakes an annual Pilgrimage to Walsingham and in the last decade we have followed St Paul’s journeys around the Mediterranean visiting Italy, Greece, Turkey and Malta. We are a busy parish; there are a number of groups which meet on a regular basis, some as part of our outreach programme: The Friendly Club meets on a Monday for gentle exercise, a quiz, a cup of tea and ‘good company’. The Parish undertook to support this group when the London Borough of Sutton withdrew funding. The monthly Loaves and Fishes Lunch Group welcomes both members of the congregation and the wider community. The lunch is usually followed by a talk or a quiz. The bi-monthly Friday Drop In has a core membership of about 20 who meet for a drink, a chat and excellent home- made cake. Café Church at our local branch of Costa is a joint venture with another local church in a neighbouring parish. Attendance varies dependent on the theme of the evening; when local comedian Tim Vine spoke on Laughter it was standing room only. Knitting Club meets once a month. The 15 to 20 regulars, not all members of the congregation, meet to knit and chat. The group supports local charities, including hats and scarves for Sutton Night Watch; the neonatal unit of the local hospital, and charities supporting the dispossessed in Syria.

An important part of parish life is our local branch of Mothers’ Union. The branch celebrates its centenary in 2018. The membership of more than 50 comes together for a variety of social and spiritual meetings. MU provides support for the local women’s refuge and other deanery projects, raising over £1000 each year for the work of MU in the diocese. Cards are sent to babies baptised and couples married in the Parish. MU organise gifts of daffodils and simnel cake on Mothering Sunday. The Friday Drop in is held in the church hall twice monthly with 20+ regularly 'dropping in' for coffee and a chat.

St Dunstan’s Bell Ringers St Dunstan's Church has a peel of six bells and the earliest bell in the tower dates from early in the 18th century. When possible, the team of bell ringers meet for practice on a Thursday evening and also join with other teams in the area. They usually ring before the 9.30am Sunday service, for weddings and for special seasonal services during the church year. The bells are also rung to open the Cheam Charter Fair each May and for important national occasions when appropriate.

St Alban-the-Martyr

At St Alban’s, we serve the east of the Parish and hold regular community events. Foremost among these are our fortnightly drop-in sessions on Friday mornings, as well as our Spring, Autumn and Christmas Fairs. We have a strong social life with quiz nights, choir concerts, Advent/ Christmas lunch, Epiphany Breakfast and Summer Holiday Saturday drop-ins.

Our church was built in 1930-33 from parts of buildings fromthe old Cheam Court Farm in the village. This gives theGander Green Lane part of the Parish a building which although comparatively new, feels old and certainly has the character of a large barn. A new organ, choir stalls, Stations of the Cross, statue of Our Lady of Walsingham, font, storage cupboards and shelving have been installed in the last few years. The lighting system needs renewal due to obsolescence and the drafting of a faculty is currently in progress for this. The church has a kitchen and meeting room and thereis a separate church hall 300 yards further along GanderGreen Lane. This has one large hall and stage, a small hall, kitchen, toilets and an enclosed garden. It is in very good order and is well used by the church and many community groups including a preschool and a dance school. The hall has a bookings secretary/caretaker, is financially independent, and the DCC is committed to maintaining it as a community resource.

The Electoral Roll numbers fifty-four and represents a good mix of local people and those coming from further afield – usually people who used to live in the area. On an average Sunday there are around 40 communicants.

Worship is centred on the Eucharist. Common Worship (Order 1) is used on Sundays and weekdays. On Sundays

at 10.45am there is a Family Eucharist which is sung. It is followed by refreshments in the church. There is a weekday Eucharist on Wednesdays at 10.00am, followed by refreshments. There is a Healing Mass every first Wednesday of the month. Choral Evensong (Book of Common Prayer) is held on the first Sunday of the month at 6.00pm. Stations of the Cross are celebrated weekly in Lent, and Holy Week is kept in full. The Advent Carol Service, St Alban’s Day, All Souls’, Harvest, Remembrance, Christmas and Easter are among the liturgical highlights of the year and are well supported.

St Alban’s Sunday School Our Sunday School runs during term time only and has 5 leaders and 14 children on the register. Each week there is always 1 leader and 1 helper. Children are welcome to join our Sunday School from birth to 12 years old and weekly attendance averages on 5-6 children.

We arrange three trips during the year. Last year we took the children to Dean City Farm, Chobham Adventure Park and a Father Christmas visit. We also have a Good Friday Parish Easter Workshop organised by the Sunday School leaders and cross-Parish Sunday School teams. It is very popular being attended by approximately fifty local children.

St Oswald’s, North Cheam

St Oswald’s is situated to the North of the Parish and serves some two and a half thousand households in an area known as the Park Farm Estate. The church and its adjoining hall date to 1953 and 1937 respectively (the hall being built first to serve the spiritual and community needs of the then developing estate). A new vicarage was built adjacent to the church in 2015, and minor works to provide new vestries and a kitchen for the church were carried out at the same time. The area enjoys excellent transport links with central London and the surrounding area, and in addition to a range of local shops there are two large supermarkets close by. A well-regarded Nursery/Infants School is located almost opposite the church, and a Junior School is in close proximity. As such, it is a popular area for young families. The church is continuously maintained in a good state of repair and has been redecorated, and new lighting and heaters installed, within the past fifteen years. The church finances are sound and full and prompt payment of our contribution to the PSF is always made. Our worship is based around a Sunday morning Family Eucharist, with term-time Sunday School led by a team of leaders and helpers. There is a small, but very talented, choir, the music being led by our Music Director. Special occasions (e.g. Easter, Mothering Sunday, Harvest, Remembrance and Christmas) are

34

celebrated by a modified ‘All Age’ service, to which the local uniformed groups are invited. Sadly, numbers of young people attending these latter services have declined in recent years, and our MAP has identified as a priority for 2018 a need to develop our church facilities, services and outreach, to better serve the needs of children, young people and their families/carers.

There is a mid-week Eucharist on a Thursday morning, which includes healing on the first Thursday of the month. Home communion is offered to those who are unable to attend church regularly. A lay-led Lent course is offered each year in a local home, which is well attended, but we are mindful that we could do more to offer a wider range of courses to attract new interest. Members of the congregation have a strong tradition of fundraising for local and national charities. We hold annual Summer and Christmas Fairs which are well supported by the local community. The church is open each Wednesday for a coffee morning which attracts some older members of the community as well as from within our congregation. In association with AgeUK (Sutton) we offer a fortnightly ‘Sing for Joy’ session, which has proved very successful, with a regular attendance of some 20/30 participants. For the past two years, the group have performed at our annual Nine Lessons and Carols service.

Our adjoining hall is very well used by the local community and generates a significant contribution to church funds. A pre-school, which has close links with the church, meets there each weekday morning (and all day Fridays), and a variety of other groups meet in the hall on a weekly basis (several dancing groups, keep fit/well-being, karate, mathematics tuition, Townswomens’ Guild). We also have private bookings at weekends for children’s parties. This has tremendous potential for developing more creative links with our local community, which we have sadly so far been unable to exploit.

Our Mission Action Plan Following a process of reflection on our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and available resources across our Parish we have developed a Mission Action Plan for the 2018 period to direct activities and decision making towards our overall vision for the next five years. A full copy of our Mission Action Plan is given in Appendix 5. Diocesan Vision Statement The Diocesan vision is to be a people with hearts of fire, loving God, walking with Jesus and led by the Spirit. In 2017, the Diocese launched its Southwark Vision - that we seek to be a Diocese:

• Walking with Jesus and getting to know Jesus better as we journey on • Welcoming all, embracing our diversity and seeking new ways of being

church • Growing in numbers, generosity, faith and discipleship as we grow

God's Kingdom The Diocesan vision is founded on mutual commitment from all who make up the Diocesan family to walk together in the pilgrimage of faith, supporting, encouraging and resourcing each other in our common task. Parish Mission Statement Our Team Mission Statement within the context of the wider Diocesan Vision is:

‘Working together for the glory of God and to serve his people.’ Our aims and objectives for the current year - fall under the following three Priority Areas:

1. Welcoming through Worship – to develop our worship and offer a variety of forms to more fully meet the needs of our community.

2. Walking with Jesus through Developing Discipleship – cultivating and

encouraging a more personal and deeper relationship with God.

3. Growing our Younger Community. Our objectives for the next five years To be:

• a caring church with activities (subject to resources) reaching out to and serving the local community, whilst maintaining the teaching of the Gospels through the provision of regular Sunday and weekday church services under the visionary leadership of the Rector and team ministry;

• a welcoming, vibrant and expanding Christian community in Cheam; • a thriving church of mixed age range; • relevant to, and present in, the everyday lives of the majority of households

in the Parish.

37

Appendix 1 St Dunstan’s, Cheam, C of E Primary School The school community The majority of pupils are White British, with 32% of pupils from a minority ethnic background. The proportion of pupils who are learning English as an additional language has increased considerably over the past year and is now only slightly below the national figure. The proportion of pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is below average, as is the proportion supported at school action plus (support plus) or with a statement of special educational needs. The proportion of children known to be entitled to additional funding by the pupil premium is below average. SIAMS Inspection Every five years the school has a Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS), which is an inspection similar to OFSTED, but which focuses on the Christian distinctiveness of a church school. A SIAMS inspection took place in January 2018, which validated the school as ‘outstanding’. The full SIAMS report can be found at: http://fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdnassl.com/FileCluster/StDunstansPrimary/MainFolder/SIAMS-Final-Report.pdf The Chair of Governors and many other staff and governors have their own Christian faith, supporting them in their vocation to serve God and the school community. The Headteacher is well supported by senior leaders, governors and staff who are strongly motivated and have high expectations of achievement. The Team Rector leads collective worship every half term as well as a monthly Eucharist for KS2. He or she also leads Admission to Communion classes for Year 3 children in school, which has been confirmed as a worshipping community by the Bishop of Croydon. Confirmation is also offered as part of a Parish-wide programme. The school and Parish benefit from there being strong links between the Governing Body, the PCC and DCC. There are good links with the wider church and professional community. Daily collective worship is central to the life of the school and is fully inclusive. High importance is placed on the coming together of the whole school to worship and pray together. A variety of styles and traditions are used. School worship is evaluated to monitor the children’s understanding of the themes and for future worship planning. Collective worship themes (including SEAL), church services and RE, which is treated as a core subject, are all integrated within the very broad and balanced curriculum and embedded as part of the distinctive nature of the school. Children in the school’s Nursery have their own distinct and

Page 38: Parish of Cheam Profile FINAL V1.0 - Anglican Diocese of … · 2018-07-31 · 3 Introduction It’s an exciting time in the life of Cheam Parish which is a Team Ministry blessed

38

varied opportunities for daily worship and biblical teachings, reflecting the worship of the wider school and linked to the child initiated learning. Key stage worship twice a week enables themes to be explored in more depth and more specifically age related. This is led by staff, clergy and Sutton Schools Workers, a local Christian schools’ charity. Key Stage 2 children have joint ownership of the school Eucharist by reading the lessons, reading and writing prayers, and joining in the preparation and celebration of the Eucharist; all children are involved in the preparation of other worship, including setting up the worship table, choosing music, etc. Year 6 plan and lead worship for KS1 during the Spring and Summer terms. Worship reflects real life and world events, including The Bishop’s Lent appeal and prayers for events locally, nationally and globally. Year 6 children also participate in the annual Southwark leavers’ service at the Cathedral, as well as the school’s thanksgiving service. All Year 6 pupils rehearse and participate in leading this service where individual blessings are given and children are presented with the gift of a Bible to take with them into their new lives within the next phase of their education. The leadership team keep RE and Collective Worship as a priority for all and support subject leaders in further developing both themselves and their subjects. RE is treated as a core subject. All classes have prayer and reflection corners and RE displays. There are also RE displays across the school including the entrance hall, ensuring that the whole school community understands that RE is central to the school. Many distinctively Christian based actions enrich school life and are well received by all members of our community, e.g. regular Eucharist services open to the public, prayer tree and spiritual areas for all to offer prayers, Harvest gifts shared with the Spires homeless centre in Streatham and local foodbanks, ‘Thank You Tea’ for those who have helped in school, and regular school events and performances where members of the local community are invited.

Appendix 2 – About the Parish Demographics Cheam has a higher proportion of older, retired residents than other parts of the borough of Sutton. This is reflected in the age profile of the congregation. Only 32% of households have dependent children, 7% are single parent families. Three quarters of the population were born in England, less than 10% cannot speak English. The vast majority of the population is white. For more detailed demographics please see Appendix 3. Education There are four primary schools within the Parish: St Dunstan’s Church of England School, plus three local authority schools. All are below the national average of entitlement to free school meals. The number of children in the Parish for whom English is an additional language (EAL) is increasing. There are two high schools, Nonsuch School for Girls (selective) and Cheam High (mixed non-selective). Sutton’s five grammar schools are invariably near the top of the national league tables. Cheam High hold their Christmas celebrations in St Dunstan’s church as do a number of the primary and nursery schools. The only library in the Parish is in Cheam Village. It has an excellent children’s section. Hospitals and Care Homes There are no NHS hospitals in the Parish, but both St Helier and Epsom hospitals are accessible by public transport, but not necessarily by a direct route. More details for Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust can be found at: https://www.epsom-sthelier.nhs.uk The nearest psychiatric hospital is at Tooting Bec. St Anthony’s private hospital is at North Cheam, St Raphael’s Hospice is in the grounds of this hospital, our clergy being part of its Chaplaincy Service. There are several GP surgeries. The 2011 census records that the percentage of people in Cheam recording their health as good was above the national average. The London Borough of Sutton website identifies eight nursing homes and six residential care homes within or adjacent to the Parish boundary. All are privately owned. Sport and Leisure Sutton United’s football ground is on the Parish boundary, very closely located to St Alban’s Church. We would like to build a closer relationship with the football club (see Mission Action Plan Appendix 5). Cheam Recreation Ground and Nonsuch Park are the largest open spaces in the area; as well as opportunities for walking, running and football there is a children’s playground, tennis courts and a bowling green. There are a number of tennis, bowls, cricket and health clubs, and Cheam Leisure Centre has a gym, sauna and steam room. A member of the congregation runs a Pilates and dance studio.

40

Shopping There is one large supermarket (Sainsbury’s) in North Cheam (the Tesco superstore is just beyond the Parish boundary) and many smaller convenience stores, including Waitrose in Cheam Village. Morrison’s and Asda have large stores in Sutton. The larger shopping areas of Croydon, Kingston, Wimbledon and Sutton are easily accessible by public transport. In 2011, it was widely reported in the national media that 27% of shops in North Cheam were empty or derelict. The situation has improved, but continued uncertainty over the redevelopment of the former Victoria House continues to blight the area. There are Post Office branches in Cheam and North Cheam. Eating Out Cheam Village is noted for its restaurants; there are at least twenty eateries within a two-minute walk of Cheam Village crossroads. Lovers of Chinese, Indian, Italian, Thai and Turkish cuisine are well provided for. There are a variety of restaurants in North Cheam including the best fish and chips in the Parish. Entertainment The nearest cinema is in Sutton. Wimbledon’s cinema has an IMAX screen. The borough has no professional theatre though amateur dramatics is thriving. Transport There are two mainline rail stations in the Parish. Cheam station is served by Southern rail with direct connections northbound to Victoria and London Bridge, taking about 30 minutes. The Thameslink service to St Pancras and Luton Airport can be accessed by changing at Sutton. Southbound services terminate at Epsom, Dorking or Horsham. West Sutton station is on the Sutton to Wimbledon loop of the Thameslink service. Both stations are in London Travel Zone 5. Although neither the London Underground nor the Croydon Tramlink serve the area there are connections by bus to the Northern Line at Morden and the District Line at Wimbledon. The tram service can be reached either by bus or train. Buses are plentiful: among destinations served are Croydon, Epsom, Heathrow Airport, Kingston, Putney and Wimbledon. The Kingston and Wimbledon/Putney services run 24 hours a day.

A Brief History

• Listed as owned by the Abbey of Chertsey in 1018. • Recorded as Ceiham in the Domesday Book (Ham a dwelling, Cei

probably derived from a personal name). It was the property of Archbishop Lanfranc and valued at £14.

• Thought to have been designated a town by a charter of Henry III in 1259. • Noted for its potteries in the Middle Ages. • In 1538 part of Cheam was handed over to Henry VIII for the construction

of Nonsuch Palace which was demolished in 1801. • The Red Lion Public House and Whitehall, originally a wattle and daub

yeoman’s house, were built in the 16th century. • An article of 1792 by Daniel Lysons records the spelling Cheam had been

in use for about 200 years. He also records the existence of the manors of east and west Cheam and their connection to the Lumley family.

• The 1801 census records 616 Chemonians. • Cheam School was founded in Whitehall in 1645 before moving to Tabor

Court. Prince Phillip attended the school prior to its relocation to Berkshire. • Cheam was a rural village until the arrival of the railway and the motor car.

The Old Cottage on the Broadway is a rare survival from that era. • The Cheam Village Conservation Area was designated in 1970. • There are a number of listed buildings in the village including Whitehall, The

Red Lion, Nonsuch Mansion, the Georgian former Rectory, the Lumley Chapel and St Dunstan’s Church.

• St Dunstan’s was built in the years 1862-64 on a site slightly removed from the original site where the land was unstable. One of a small number of churches designed by FH Pownall, it is grade 2 listed. The 1891 lychgate and 3 tombs in the churchyard are also grade 2 listed.

• The chancel of the original church, now known as the Lumley Chapel, is the oldest building in Cheam, over 900 years old. The tombs of the Lumley family fill the chapel. Services are held there two or three times a year, particularly on St Dunstan’s Day. The building is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

• Cheam has its own gold post box recognising the achievement of the cyclist Joanna Rowsell at the London Olympics in 2012. Joanna attended Cuddington Croft Primary School and Nonsuch High School for Girls.

• The comedian Tim Vine and his brother Jeremy are both Chemonians. • The writers of the BBC Radio comedy series ‘Hancock’s Half Hour’ set his

home at the fictional address of 23, Railway Cuttings, East Cheam. • Other notable local people include:

o Alec Stewart (ex-England cricketer) lived in Cheam. o David Bellamy attended Cheam Fields Primary School. o James Hunt (1947–99) racing driver, lived in Cheam as a child and

attended Ambleside School. o Harry Secombe lived in Cheam for many years.

Appendix 3 Demographics

• Cheam is an urban village on the Southern tip of Greater London. It forms part of the London Borough of Sutton.

• The 2011 census records the population of the Cheam Ward (which is not equivalent with the Parish boundary) as 10,285, 52% female, 48% male. Cheam Parish has a population of approximately 26,000. The Sutton Equality and Diversity Card (2014/5) notes that Cheam Ward has the highest proportion of older and retired people in the borough, a trend which is predicted to continue. Life expectancy is above the national average.

• Sutton has a higher white majority population (78.6%) than other boroughs in SW London. The 2011 census records that 78.8% of the people living in Cheam were born in England, the next largest group were born in India. Over 90% of the population speak English; amongst other languages spoken are Tamil and Polish.

• The majority of residents identify as Christians, while approximately 20% profess to no religion. There are fewer Moslems than in comparable London boroughs. The 2011 census records 24 Jedi Knights in the ward.

• Sutton has a relatively low index of multiple deprivations compared to other London Boroughs. There are 17 Lower Super Output Area (LSOAs), in the borough, but none are within the Parish.

• Cheam has a greater level of residents with higher education qualifications than the national average, and fewer residents with no qualifications at all.

• Cheam has 20% more AB/C1 (Higher and Intermediate managerial or administrative or professional) households than the national average.

• The number of residents claiming benefits is less than the national average. • Anecdotal evidence would suggest that most of the people who live in the

Parish work elsewhere. Conversely, many of the people who work in the Parish live elsewhere. This is particularly true of full time workers.

• There is no industry in the Parish. • The most recent data from the Metropolitan Police suggests that levels of

crime in Cheam are very low. The nearest Police Station is in Sutton. • Further information can be found in the ‘Spotlight’ data - select Cheam at:
