Third Sunday of Advent, John the BaptistWe are all called to continue to be witnesses to the true words of God. This third Sunday of Advent, we are joyfully anticipating the birth of Our Lord. How can we witness the truth in the next week? How can we do this without boasting yet quietly letting others see our joy of the coming birth?

Both Elijah and John are persecuted and yet stand steadfast with God. We are also called to continue our duty as Catholics and support our Church and Church leaders — to pray and stand up for our beliefs even in a world of indifference.

May we continue to spend the days preparing for Christmas by praying and doing our spiritual reading daily so that we are ready to celebrate after next weekend.

Amen? Amen!

Decorating the church for Christmas! Are you one of those people who love to decorate for Christmas? The smell of fresh pine and the sight of red and white poinsettias fills you with joy? Then join the Worship Commission on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 5:30 PM or later as we decorate our church for a beautiful Christmas celebration. Come join the fun with some of your fellow parishioners! The more the merrier and the faster we are finished. If you are a last-minute person, please do feel free to show up to lend a hand!

RCIA THIS WEEKPlease pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church!

At this week’s RCIA session, we conclude our semester of learning and conversion with an Advent Celebration and Review Night with the Candidates and Catechumens. At this class, we join in fellowship

and fun while playing a form of Catholic Jeopardy to review everything that we have covered thus far. We have discussed important topics such as prayer, the Trinity, faith, divine revelation, the Bible, salvation history, the person of Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the life of grace, the importance of the Church, Mary and the saints, and the four last things. As we embrace our Advent journey, please consider praying for a candidate or catechumen by name this season. We will soon be highlighting individual candidates and catechumens in the bulletin giving the greater parish community an opportunity to join in this Journey of Faith.

To study along with us, please log onto Formed.org (parish code YX2P22). You can view each of our lessons on this platform each week.

Credo (I Believe)Why did Jesus call apostles?

Jesus had a large circle of disciples around him, both men and women. From this circle he selected twelve men whom he

called Apostles (Luke 6:12-16). The apostles were specially trained by him and entrusted with various commissions: “He sent

them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal” (Luke 9:2). Jesus took only these twelve apostles with him to the Last

Supper, where he gave them the command, “Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19b).

The apostles became witnesses of Jesus’ Resurrection and guarantors of the truth about him. They continued Jesus’ mis-

sion after his death. They chose successors for their ministry: the bishops. To this day, the successors of the apostles exercise

the authority conferred by Jesus: They govern and teach and celebrate the liturgy. The cohesiveness of the apostles became

the foundation for the unity of the Church (Apostolic Succession). Preeminent once again among the Twelve was Peter, on

whom Jesus bestowed special authority: “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church” (Matthew 16:18). From

Peter’s special role among the apostles developed the papal ministry.

A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams

JOHN 1:6-8, 19-28

“There is one among you whom you do not recognize.”

Our faith is more than a set of rules or a series of teachings that we are required to believe; it is an encounter with a person, Jesus Christ. He takes the initiative to be present to us in many forms. Even so, there are times when we also fail to recognize Jesus.

God desires more than anything else that we live our lives in union with him. He sent his Son among us to share completely in our lives; Jesus knows the human experi-ence well, very well. Because of that, he guides us towards a way of life that is most beneficial for us, a way of life that doesn’t end on this earth but moves forward in the hope of eternal happiness, complete fulfillment of all our desires, in heaven. His encounter with us is marked by his call, “Follow me!” He is still calling each of us to follow him. He calls us through our contact with him in prayer, in the Eu-charist, through the words and charity of those around us, and through the teachings and guidance that he continues to speak through his Church. He is present. He is among us. We must strive to recognize him, and in recognizing that it is Jesus who calls us, we have the strength and confidence to move forward with him.

Becoming Catholic. Seeking faith? Curious about the Church? Want to learn more? Call us today at 513-871-5757, ext. 215.

Elmer Smith was born in Dayton, Ohio, on July 19, 1926. He attended the local public school his kinder-garten year and then went to St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart Latin School in Dayton through grade nine. For grades ten through twelve and the first four years of college, he studied at St. Gregory Seminary in Mt. Washington, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati, where he completed his bachelor of arts degree. He com-pleted his postcollege studies at Mt. St. Mary’s in Norwood, Ohio.

Father Smith was ordained a priest September 8, 1950, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Norwood, Ohio. From 1950 to 1951, he was a student priest at Angelicum University in Rome, where he received a degree of Licentiate in Sacred Theology. One of his most memorable life events was his visit to the Holy Land during the Christmas season of 1950.

After his ordination, Father Smith served many roles at many parishes including Assistant at Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Pleasant Ridge and Latin teacher at Purcell High School (1951–1955); Assistant at St. Agnes Parish, Dayton, Ohio (1955–1961); Assistant at St. Joseph Parish, Springfield, Ohio, and part-time religion teacher at Catholic Central High School, Springfield, Ohio (1961–1970); Administrator at St. Joseph Parish, Springfield, Ohio (1970–1974); Pastor at St. Joseph Parish, Springfield, Ohio (1974–1981); Pastor at St. Cecilia Parish (1981–2008); and Pastor Emeritus at St. Cecilia Parish (2008-2017).

Father Smith passed from this life on December 10. He was anointed in the sacraments just before his passing and lovingly cared for up to the moment he took his last breath. All who came to know Father Smith knew him as a kind, gentle and loving man who gave the time of day for anyone who crossed his path. He will be greatly missed. Father Smith has donated his body to science. His memorial Mass was Saturday, December 16, at 10:30 AM. May he be granted eternal rest in heaven.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace. - Numbers 6:24-26

We have openings for the first Friday, the fifth Monday, the fifth Thursday and the fifth Friday of each month. We ask that meals are delivered at 5 PM to the rectory in disposable containers.
