St. Bridget Liturgical Ministers

The May/June schedules have been sent out. If you do not get yours by email there are printed copies in the binder in the sacristy. Schedul-ing requests for July/August should be made by June 1. Call the parish office ( 860-643-2403) or email

[email protected].

Funeral Altar Servers Needed

We are in need of adults who could assist the priest at funerals - partic-ularly at St. Bart’s. Male or female - if you are retired and would like to serve in this very rewarding ministry, a current, experienced altar server would be happy to have you shadow them until you feel com-fortable on your own. If you are only available on the weekend, we could use you then. To volunteer or to get more information call the parish office at 860-643-2403.

"The ‘basic need’ is our first

economic objective, not growth, not increasing the

per capita income. You should not ask the question: ‘How much has the economy grown?’ You should ask, ‘How many

people are now getting a balanced meal?’"

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 6, 2018

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Assisting our neighbors in need

May 6 Sixth Sunday of Easter

In the Gospel today, Jesus says to us, “This is my commandment: Love one another as I have loved you ...You are my friends if you do what I

command you.” Your support of St. Vincent de Paul fulfills the commandment to love one another as Jesus has loved you.

Is there an individual or family you know who needs assistance ? Please tell them to call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we

can be a sign of God’s love to our neighbors in need.

We want to help !

860-670-7016

Leave a message and an SVDP member will return the call.

All calls are handled in complete confidence.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul welcomes " all who wish to live their faith by loving and serving their neighbor."

We are a lay volunteer organization. All donations made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are used directly for the benefit of

our neighbors in need. We are looking for new members! Please come and meet us and learn:

What we do Who we help How we help

All meetings are held at St. Bartholomew’s meeting room: St. Bridget’s SVDP meets at 7:00 PM on the second Tuesday of every month.

St. Bartholomew’s SVDP meets at 7:00 PM on the first Thursday of every month.

Please consider joining us at either meeting – or both!

SVDP April Showers - For Babies - THANK YOU !!!

Your wonderful donations of adorable outfits, toys, diapers, wipes, onesies, sleepers,

shampoo, diaper cream, blankets, crib sheets, towels, washcloths, and monetary dona-

tions are AMAZING !

The layettes will be put together for distribution through our town social worker to sup-

port new moms in our community and provide a warm, wonderful welcome to their new-

born.

Thank you for joining with us to help welcome the newest members of our community.

Qualified Charitable Distributions

For those of you at least 70-1/2 with an IRA, you are eligible to take a Qualified Charitable Distribution or “QCD”. Your financial services agency

can directly send a contribution amount you specify to any qualified charity you support, including Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish. You cannot re-

ceive the money yourself; it must be sent directly from your IRA financial institution. You can contribute as often as you want, monthly or once a

year.

A QCD will cut your federal and state income taxes. It may also lower the tax amount on your social security income. - you will lower your

AGI and pay less federal tax; you will lower your state tax since federal AGI is lower and you may lower the fraction of your Social Security income

that is taxed. For more information, contact your financial advisor.

St. Teresa of Calcutta Weekly Offertory Weekend of April 28-29, 2018

Collection Boxes: $ 9,315.00 Online Donations: $ 3,175.84 Total: $ 12,490.84

Thank you for your continued generosity.

Lectio Divina

The practice of Lectio Divina can

be traced back to the 5th century. It

focuses on reading Scripture with

the express intent of hearing God’s

personal message in the words. Know

the background, understand the rationale,

and learn how you can do this. Lectio can

be a powerful tool for deepening our con-

versations with God.

Nancy Billias, parishioner (and cantor) and profes-sor at the University of St Joseph in West Hartford, will offer her reflections on Lectio Divina … when, why, and how to engage in this prayer practice. Tuesday, May 8th, at 7pm at St Bart’s

Live the Gospel

Pope Francis tirelessly proclaims a Church full of hope and joy. Recently he did so by releasing his third “exhortation”, entitled Rejoice and Be Glad. In the justice center, there are copies of a few reviews on this letter. If you would like to read a copy, you can find it online at https://zenit.org/articles/gaudate

-et-exsultate-on-the-call-to-holiness-in-todays-world-full-text/ I have ordered copies from USCCB and will sell them at discounted cost of $10. John Ryan, [email protected], or 860-643-2403x104, or tell me after Mass.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

BIRTHRIGHT, as usual, will distribute baby bottles after Masses on Mother’s Day, May 13 weekend. We ask that you take the bottles home, fill them with coins, cash, or check and return them to the Birth-right volunteer stationed after Masses on June 2nd

and 3rd. As you will see from the insert inside the bottle, you may make a donation in honor of or in memory of a loved one. Birthright will send an acknowledgement card of your gift of life. This is an opportunity for our parish members to have hands-on involvement in a project that saves the lives of unborn children and makes a lasting difference in the mothers’ lives. Thank you for any help you can give.

Bread for the World Offering of Letters 2018

This Offering of Letters campaign by Bread for the World that we do as a parish every spring has proven successful in influencing Congress to ena-

ble people in our country and around the world to feed their families and move out of poverty. Our simple act of signing a letter to our Congressmen

has been effective in edging us ever closer to the United Nations goal of ending hunger by 2030! It only takes a minute to do, but it is a powerful tool

in reducing unnecessary hunger here at home and all over the world.

As St. (Mother) Theresa, our parish patroness said:

I USED TO PRAY THAT GOD WOULD FEED THE HUNGRY . . .

BUT NOW I PRAY THAT HE WILL GUIDE ME TO DO WHAT I CAN DO.

I USED TO BELIEVE THAT PRAYER CHANGES THINGS,

BUT NOW I KNOW THAT PRAYER CHANGES US AND WE CHANGE THINGS.

Please CHANGE THINGS by signing a letter to your Congressmen on the weekend of May 19th or 20th.

Brake the Cycle of Poverty

The annual trip of this parish ministry is fast approaching … Saturday June 23rd for almost a week … cruising the byways of Connecticut, visiting

parishes, shelters, and politicians’ offices spreading awareness of poverty in our state and the Christian message that we are called to do something

about it.

1) We are looking for folks who would like to join us for one or more of the six days … either riding a bike or driving a support vehicle (or riding

shotgun).

2) We are also looking for another support vehicle … so if you could drive yours with us that would be great.

Either way, please contact Lou Terzo at [email protected] or 860-268-8145 - with any questions you might have.

The Power of Risk It’s hard to meet anyone these days who does not know what’s wrong with the world around them. The problem is that it is almost equally difficult to

find anyone who not only knows what’s wrong with things as it is to find those who intend to do anything about it.

Like write a letter to someone who has the power to change things, maybe. Or make a donation to groups that are trying to do what I would like to see

done, perhaps. Or go to a public rally or protest on the subject. Or call together a group to address the matter.

It has something to do with integrity, with the obligation to stop complaining if I myself never do a thing to make life better. It is also about holding

myself responsible “if the unjust prosper” as the psalmist says, and I have done nothing whatsoever to avoid that.

It isn’t what we believe in that really counts. It’s what we do about what we believe that makes all the difference. It’s that which will affect both our

lives and the lives of others as well. excerpt from Sr Joan Chittister’s May 2018 Monastic Way

Power of “No”

When the world seems to be going in one direction and your soul seems to be drawing you in another, remember the warning of Edmund Burke: “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.”

* Are you “of good conscience”? * In what direction is your soul “drawing you”? * Do you “remain silent” or speak out?

This year’s Closing Keynote Speaker will be Fr. Stephen Sledesky. Pastor of St. George Church, Guilford. Fr. Sledesky's talk will be: "Home is Where

the Heart Is".

Jesus calls us to continual conversion, to 'change our hearts' and inspire others to change as well. The world needs that change, but the world is so big! Fr. Sledesky will encourage us to start at home, grow our own hearts, our families'

hearts, our parishes' hearts, and our towns' hearts ... to reflect Jesus' call.

In addition to Fr. Stephen, the conference will have an exciting Open-ing Keynote Speaker Joan Rosenhauer from Jesuit refugee Services and CRS. And include twelve engaging workshops in English and Spanish (list of workshop descriptions in justice center and at parish web site), lunch, exhibitors.

ALL that for the discounted St Teresa cost of only $20 for the whole day. Just register with John Ryan by June 4th

Exploring Spirituality This year, Exploring Spirituality has focused on Fr. Richard Rohr’s Two Major Tasks of Spiritual Life. Special emphasis has been on how living in the second stage can help to bring calm out of chaos for us and those around us. On Thursday, May 17th, Exploring Spirituality will have its final presentation based on Sr. Joan Chittister’s The Gift of Years. Unlike other evenings in the past, this one will be like preparing a wonderful, flavorful stew together. You’re asked to bring your experiences of aging with you to place in our communal pot: your transformations, fears, accomplishments, the things you let go of, and the new transforming things you’ve picked up; the dreams, the memories, the sadness, joys and the experiences of

agelessness; your spiritual growth, the things you appreciate and the

wisdom you’ve gained through the years. All of your offerings will be deliciously seasoned with the wisdom and experiences of Sr. Joan’s Benedictine spirituality shared through Chris Seethaler. Please join us in the Fr. Hussey Hall at 7:00 PM on May 17th. We’re really looking forward to cooking with all of you! See you in the Exploring Spirituality kitchen. (For questions or additional information please call: Chris @ 860-633-1414.)

Children’s Education

What about older children who have not been baptized?

What about older children who have not received communion or confession?

Many times children have not received one or more of the sacraments or they have missed being part of our children’s religion program. This hap-pens for many reasons and should not be a source of embarrassment. We will have a summer program for children who would like to prepare to re-ceive the sacraments. The program will be a way for students to catch up on what they have missed and get ready to prepare to receive the sacra-ments.

If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact the Religious Education Office at 860 643-2403 ext. 105 or [email protected]. We would love to hear from you.

Thanks, Kim’s Class: Saturday 4/28 the students in Kim’s confirmation class participated in Rebuilding Manchester. They were

responsible for all of the yard work at the address assigned. Everyone

worked really hard. Thanks to all who participated in helping out the

community. Great Job!

We would like to welcome everyone to the RCIA process. It is

a place to ask questions, to find out who we are, to find out

what Catholics believe, a place to be welcomed. Perhaps you

have questions, maybe you are married to a Catholic or you are

a non-Catholic who is raising your children in the Catholic

faith but you feel left out of a very important part of the lives of

those you love. Maybe God is calling you or someone you

know to join our faith. Or maybe you were baptized but never

Parish of Saint Teresa Calcutta, Saint Bartholomew Church

Saturday, June 2 9:00-4:00

Lunch will be provided.

Too often we have learned to see the religions of the world in competitive terms of difference and divisions. Let us ponder together the common ground, the wisdom and spiritual treasures that underlie them. We shall consider the ancient religions of India, China, and Japan. We shall look to the Abrahamic religious of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Together we shall take a look in a one day workshop. Cost: $20.00 per person- payment due at registration.

Deadline is Wednesday May 30th.

PEANUT BUTTER A JELLY is the food of the month for our Feed the Hungry Drive. Please help us stock the MACC Community P{antry. It’s real easy.

Just add one food item to your shopping list this week, bring it to church next weekend, and put it in one of the containers at the church entrances. The SCC will take your donation to MACC. Thank you for helping out.
