Blessing of Advent Wreath at Home

All make the sign of the cross. The leader begins Our help is in the name of the Lord. All respond: Who made heaven and earth. The leader may use these or similar words to introduce the blessing: In the short days and long nights of Advent, we realize how we are always waiting for deliverance, always needing salvation by our God. Around this wreath, we shall remember God’s promise. Then the Scripture is read: Listen to the words of the prophet Isaiah: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shown. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing. Isaiah 9:1-2 The reader concludes: This is the Word of the Lord. All respond: Thanks be to God. After a time of silence, all join in prayers of intercession and the Lord’s Prayer. Then the leader invites: Let us now pray for God’s blessing upon us and upon this wreath. Holy Water is sprinkled on the wreath.. After a short silence, the leader prays: Lord our God, We praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, Let your blessings come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R. Amen

ADVENT MATERIALS WEEK 2 5

First reading Isaiah 11:1-10 On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD. Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide, but he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the land’s afflicted. He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his hips. Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the cobra’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD, as water covers the sea. On that day, the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the nations, the Gentiles shall seek out, for his dwelling shall be glorious. The Word of the Lord Commentary on Isaiah: Isaiah prophesizes that a branch, a new shoot, would spring up from the stump and root from which King David came (Jesse being the father of King David). We have all seen a new shoot coming from a rotted tree stump, a new branch coming right out of the ground where there is a root from a tree several yards away, particularly with willow or poplar trees. Even so, in the darkest days when the kingdom of David was about to collapse, Isaiah saw a day when One would arise from David’s lineage to bring justice and peace to all peoples. This desire seems to reside deep down within us, almost as a part of us. We all long for a day when justice and goodness rule, and where peace and harmony exist. Those who create violence and pain have silenced this part

of their humanity. Advent, the coming of Christ and a new year brings hope that we will all live in peace one day. Question for Understanding Can you describe the kind of life about which the prophet Isaiah is speaking? Question for Discussion Being Christian is being committed to the way of life Christ brought in the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth. What would it take for you and all people to live in this kingdom? Responsorial Psalm Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13,17 R. Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for

ever. O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son; he shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment. R. Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for

ever. Justice shall flower in his days, and profound peace, till the moon be no more. May he rule from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. R. Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for

ever.

For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save. R. Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for

ever.

May his name be blessed forever; as long as the sun his name shall remain. In him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed; all the nations shall proclaim his happiness. R. Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for

ever. Second Reading Rom 15:4-9 Brothers and sisters: Whatever was written previously was written for our instruction, that by endurance and

by the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another, in keeping with Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I say that Christ became a minister of the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, to confirm the promises to the patriarchs, but so that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written: Therefore, I will praise you among the Gentiles and sing praises to your name. The Word of the Lord Commentary on Romans: There had always been a thread running through all of Jewish Scriptures that the Gentiles too would eventually be called to salvation, not just the Jews. Paul quotes from the three sections of the Hebrew Bible (The Law: Deuteronomy 32:43, The Prophets: Isaiah 11:10; and The Writings: Samuel 22:50 and Psalm 18:49 and 117:1) to show that God is fulfilling that promise now in Jesus Christ by bringing Gentiles into fellowship with Jews. Question for Understanding What kind of relationship is St. Paul saying we should have with those outside our company? Why? Question for Discussion How could you fulfill the calling of today’s second reading? Gospel Reading Matthew 3:1-12 John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: A voice of one crying out in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I.

I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” The Gospel of the Lord Commentary on Matthew: Conversion is not accomplished by just making a few surface changes to the externals of our lives. The Greek word for conversion is metanoia: “a complete turnabout!” We need to change directions, to reorient our lives at the very depth, from the inside. We must turn around and go in the opposite direction from where we had been heading. In John the Baptist, we find God at work with both power and tenderness. He is insisting that the people of God do not just rest on their heritage or their name to be saved. Instead, they must live a life of conversion, of turning away from sin and of turning to God. For us too, we cannot just rely on the fact that we are Catholic Christians as if that were enough. We must live out the call to be Christian in name and in deed. This will show evidence of our faith in Christ and our love for his Father in heaven. Question for Understanding What is the meaning of John the Baptist’s preaching in your own words? Question for Discussion What evidence is there in your life that you are on the path of repentance and so are bringing your life into harmony with the will of God?

Let’s get ready to live the spirit of Advent in

our homes……beginning on November 27!!

The Catholic Church designates the four weeks before Christmas as Advent, a time to “prepare the way of the Lord” for His coming as our King and Savior at Christmas. Our church teaches us that by celebrating the liturgy of Advent each year, we call to mind this ancient expectancy of the Messiah
