Third Sunday of Advent

Who did you come to see? A version of this question is posed

by Jesus many times in the Gospels. He asks it of Andrew and

John when they begin to follow him. He asks it of Mary

Magdalene in the garden of the resurrection. He asks it in

today’s Gospel. “What did you go out to the desert to see?”

There is something innately human about “seeing.” Animals

have eyes — some with much more powerful vision than our

own — but that’s not the kind of seeing Jesus is talking about.

We could phrase the question several other ways. “What are

you looking for?” “What are you longing for?” “Whom do you

seek?”

It is in seeing for ourselves that our suspicions or hypotheses

are confirmed, that our desires discover their fulfillment, and that

we can rest for a moment in certainty. John the Baptist sought

certainty of Jesus’ identity. “Are you the one who is to come, or

should we look for another?” Jesus sends word to him based on

the testimony of sight, observations of the mighty deeds Jesus

has begun to work. “Go and tell John what you hear and see.”

God recognizes our desire to see. In the Incarnation, the Word

is made flesh. The invisible is made visible. The supernatural is

made manifest in an infant who can do little more than the most

natural of movements as he feeds, cries, sleeps. We don’t need

to wait for Christmas to see God. The work of God is all around

us. Those blinded by sin “regain their sight.” People overcome

backgrounds of poverty and violence to make world-changing

contributions. Addicts grow and heal. Truth is spoken, and

people listen. Let’s pray for the grace to see God’s movement in

our lives this week. How have you seen the work of God?

Question: With Christmas fast approaching, can you give me some practical tips to prepare myself and my family that will help us stay grounded in what this holiday is really about? With all the commercialism, it’s easy to stray.

Answer: Happy times and events bring fond memories and a renewed sense of love and kinship with others. The anticipation is half the joy of the event itself. The coming of the Lord is that kind of event that people have been looking forward to for generations with fervent hope and desire. It gave them strength and courage as they waited for the coming of the Lord. We know that Christmas is rushed. Sales begin in August and carols blare long before the season begins. Everyone laments the commercial aspects of the season, but as Advent begins, do something to help you be more mindful of the Lord’s coming. Use an Advent wreath, or enthrone the Bible prominently, or read the readings from the Bible assigned to each day. Postpone the tree and decorations until closer to Christmas. Establish new family rituals, customs and prayers that help remind everyone that we are preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Fasting, daily Mass, a special celebration of reconciliation, reaching out to those alienated from family or society, and visiting the homebound manifest the love of the Christ Child and the Holy Family. Resist the temptation to rush the season. In his own time and in his own way, God will come. Our task is simply to be watchful and ready.

Third Sunday of Advent

Gaudete Sunday derives its name from the opening prayer of the Mass for this day, where we pray, "Gaudete in Domino

semper" (Rejoice in the Lord always). So in the midst of Advent fasting and devotions, we rejoice because the time we have been

preparing for is almost at hand. You may see rose-colored vestments and additions to the church environment due to this special

Sunday.

A day like this is always good to remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. The life of a Christian is not always easy, but it is one

of joy. If we keep our heads bowed too long, no one will be able to see the smiles on our faces.

The New Evangelization calls us to spread the good news with a joy that can be infectious. I remember being at a Eucharistic

Congress one time where there was a booth set up by an order of sisters promoting vocations. I couldn't help but to take notice of how

much they laughed and how they smiled. I thought, "Who wouldn't want to see what they are about?" Does our joy in the Lord serve

as an invitation for others to seek out Christ?
