Focusing on the Gospel
Mark begins a new theme in his gospel with today’s reading
that will be central to his story of Jesus: the obtuseness of
people to the power and authority of Jesus. The people of
Jesus’ own hometown reject his message. They consider Je-
sus too much “one of them” to be taken seriously. They are
too obsessed with superficialities—occupation, ancestry, ori-
gins—to realize the presence of God in their midst and to
allow themselves to be affected by that presence.
Jesus redefines the meaning of authority as understood by his
kinfolk: Jesus’ authorities is not deprived from his ability to
manipulate the fears, suspicions, apathy, or ignorance of those
around him but from the spirit of mercy, justice, and compas-
sion that he is able to call forth from them. The authority his
hearers see in Jesus is rooted in wisdom that comes from ex-
perience and a lived commitment to act justly and selflessly.

Catholic Charities taking
applications for energy
assistance The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP),
administered in Delaware by Catholic Charities, is now taking
applications for the 2018-2019 heating season. This federally-
funded program assists low-income Delawareans who need help
in meeting home energy costs. LIHEAP makes payments directly
to home energy suppliers. The LIHEAP benefit is based on a
household’s income, size, and type of fuel.
You may be eligible for assistance if your total household income
falls within income eligibility guidelines. For example, a house-
hold of 4 can have no more than $50,325 in annual household
income (before taxes).
In order to qualify, you must make an appointment with a Catho-
lic Charities office for a personal interview. Regular office hours
are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Marriage Moments In a healthy marriage both spouses strive to be good and strong.
But, sometimes it is through recognizing our weakness that we can
grow stronger. Can you identify a weakness in yourself that has
punctured your pride and made you a better spouse?
Parenting Pointers
July 13 is Friday the 13th which means bad luck to some
people. Why not turn the tables and make it a lucky day for
someone today. Can you think of a way to make someone feel lucky
today?
Diocesan News Are you Being Called to God? In today’s first reading, the author of the Book of Wisdom says,
“they shall know that a prophet has been among them.” Through
lives of chastity, poverty, and obedience, religious women and men
throughout our Diocese serve as prophets: their consecrated lives
point to the Kingdom of God, and they remind us that it’s worth
giving up anything for the sake of that treasure. Do you have what it
takes to live that way? If you think so, please call or write Father
Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Voca-
tions (302-573-3113, [email protected]). Be sure to visit our
