Devotions

Fifth Sunday of Easter

May 13 & 14 2017

Jesus’ claim that he is “the way and the truth and the

life” is a sweeping one that dares us to see Jesus as eve-

rything we need to come to the fullness of risen Life

ourselves. The “way” is not always appealing—dying

to ourselves, self-giving for the sake of others. The

good news and truth is that we follow Jesus’ way in less

dramatic, everyday ways. Our simple acts of reaching

out to others, alleviating their suffering, or eliminating

their need is how we follow Jesus’ way. But more: this

is how we ourselves become the way! As we do Jesus’

works, we become more like him— we take on his care,

his love, his passion for others. As we do his works, e

ourselves become the way to the Father for others. No

greater work can we do!

Marriage Moments Mother’s Day " No one has greater love than this, to lay

down one's life for one's friends." (Jn 15: 13) In addition to

Jesus, who has given their life for you? Perhaps it is your mother, or

someone who has been like a mother to you. As a spouse, be mind-

ful of laying down your life each day for your beloved.

Parenting Pointers Generally, a mother's love for her child is assumed and hope-

fully reciprocated. Yes, show love for your mother (or someone who

has been like a loving mother to you) this weekend. Identify and

share an act of sacrifice made on your behalf by your mother. What

a gift!

Are you Being Called to God? Today’s first reading tells of the calling of Stephen and six others to

serve the early Church as deacons. God still calls deacons to serve

the needs of the Body of Christ by preaching, baptizing, officiating

at marriages and by giving witness through lives consecrated to God.

If you think you might have a calling to some form of religious min-

istry, let’s talk. Call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Direc-

tor of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113; voca-

ated. Please pray for an increase in vocations in our diocese, and for

our retired priests.

May 14, 2017

This week’s gospel message from John provides us

with the hopeful reminder, that through Christ we

are saved. Our faith in Jesus has saved us and ensured us a place in

His kingdom. Christ not only provides us a fulfilling sense of hope,

for what is awaiting us in the hereafter, He also gives instructs as we

travel to the place He has prepared. Reassuring us that He will be

with the Father, Jesus sends us out to do great things in his name.

This truth should instill in us a stoic faith that motivates us to do His

work. Are we living like we believe the truth Christ revealed? He

has called us to great things. What great things has He called you to

do? Don’t let fear hold you back; Jesus has reassured us that through

Him these things can be done. Go out and do these things in Christ’s

name.
