Devotions
Only seed that sinks into rich soil—our very hearts—can produce
fruit. Our daily Gospel living is about tilling and fertilizing and
constantly preparing the “soil” of our hearts so that we can receive
Jesus’ seed-word and nurture it to bear fruit. We must let Jesus’
seed-word sink deep within us so that it can bear fruit in our daily
living, “achieving the end for which [God] sent it” (first reading)!
Most of us hear God’s word proclaimed primarily during
the Liturgy of the Word at Mass on Sundays. It is naïve to think that
we can go to Mass cold, without having prepared the readings, and
be attuned enough to God’s word to hear and remember the message
well enough to live it. One way to deepen our Gospel living is to
take quality time each week—alone or with others—to sit with
God’s word and become attune to the message. This is how we
cultivate our hearts to hear God’s word, so it is not wasted on barren
hearts.
We also hear God’s word through the words of others. A
challenging remark that moves us to new action on behalf of others,
a critical remark that causes us to look at our own behavior and
choices, a kind remark that brings us joy are all ways God’s word
comes to us, and ways we can sow the seed of God’s word in the
hearts of others ~Living Liturgy

Education Series
This week’s episode is a beautiful explanation of the Mass!
“Bishop Barron explores the ancient practices of the Church’s
worship that have endured the test of time – straight to this
very day. The Eucharist is the central practice of the Catholic
Faith – the ‘source and summit’ of Christian life. In this epi-
sode, Word Made Flesh, True Bread of Heaven: The Mystery
of the Liturgy and the Eucharist’, Bishop explains the words,
gestures, and meaning of the Church’s Eucharist. We gather
on Monday evenings from 6:30 – 8 pm, and repeat the week’s
episode on Wednesday morning at 9:15, after Mass. We gath-
er in the Social Room.

and answer it lovingly.

Annecy, the birthplace of Saint Francis de Sales, patron saint of the
Diocese of Wilmington, is an alpine town in southeastern France,
where Lake Annecy feeds into the Thiou River. It’s known for its
cobbled streets, winding canals, and pastel-colored houses. Rome,
Italy’s capital, is a sprawling, cosmopolitan city with nearly 3,000
years of globally influential art, architecture and culture on display,
including ancient ruins such as the Forum and the Colosseum. It is
the home of Vatican City, headquarters of the Roman Catholic
Church, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, as well as the
burial place of Blessed Pope Pius IX, the diocese’s founder. Assisi is
a hill town in central Italy’s Umbria region. It was the birthplace of
St. Francis, one of Italy’s patron saints.

The parable of the sower is one on the most recognized
parables. It is found in three of the gospels and is one of the few
parables that Christ takes the time to explain. While we all hope to
be that seed which lands in good soil and bears fruits, we also must
recognize that there are three other types of soil that endangers us
from being fruitful. This week as you reflect on this parable, ask
yourself how fruitful are you? You have received the word, but are
you living by it and spreading it to others? Do you struggle in our
overly secularized world, falling prey to worldly priorities? Jesus
warns us of these pitfalls so don’t turn a blind eye to them. He has
called us all to be fruitful and multiply, what are you doing to an-
swer this call?
