FIRST FRIDAY HOLY HOUR Friday, August 2 marks the first Friday of the month and this provides us with an opportunity to spend one hour in the presence of the Lord who continually shows his love for us in so many ways. Mass will be at 7:00pm followed by devotions in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.
From Monsignor Ron …
To trust in God means more than being on the receiving end; it means that we are prepared to make a life commitment to live with and for our God at all times. To walk in a trusting relationship with God on our journey of life means we have to follow Jesus. This means believing in Jesus to the extent that we freely agree to stake everything on him; faith in Jesus embraces our hearts and every aspect of our lives. It is the belief that our friendship with Jesus is the one thing really necessary in our lives. St. Paul puts forth this rather well in his letter to the Ephesians: "Indeed I account everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus, my lord."
In our Mass today we have the teaching of Jesus on prayer particularly in the teaching of the Lord's Prayer. The reason why Jesus has confidence in the power of intercessory prayer is found quite simply in the opening word: "Abba."
There are a number of lessons in this teaching that apply to all aspects of life:
* Prayer for Jesus was never simply about asking for things; rather, it is about having that intimate relationship with God. Prayer has power to change things when we have that intimate, trusting relationship with God our loving Father.
* Jesus did not simply teach the disciples a prayer; he told them a whole attitude, a way of relating to God.
* Jesus stressed the importance of persistence in prayer. For us this means to make efforts over time to try to be better people.
* We will also trust God when things do not work out precisely as we would want. He has given himself
to us totally, by giving us his Holy Spirit. We are confident that his love will never leave us.
* True prayer always lays us open to the possibility of change. Intercessory prayer is not a means of turning God into a genie in the bottle, ours to command. True prayer engages both God and the person praying. It is ultimately an act of trusting God's love and an act of obedience, expressing our readiness to follow God's Spirit.
* One of the keys to understanding the Lord's Prayer is found at the end of this prayer. I wonder how many of us realize that its plea for forgiveness is based on our willingness to forgive those who have offended us. The "Our Father" is more than a collection of words to be memorized. It is a prayer to be lived if we are willing to change and turn our lives completely towards God.
SECOND RITE OF RECONCILIATION
Saturday August 3 — The beauty of this rite of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is that in our preparation time we are offered guidance but also have the opportunity to support and be supported by our fellow parishioners as we prepare to receive this sacrament. I think that too often we underrate the importance of the sacrament and see it simply as a place to gain forgiveness for our sins. We need also to see it as a sacrament of growth and most of all is an encounter with Jesus who wishes to meet us in a personal way.

MINISTERS OF COMMUNION - First Sunday of the Month
COMING TO MASS – (Jesuit Publication):
If we go to the church, consciously aware that we are being drawn there by the Holy Spirit, and if we have a sense that
we are approaching something very special and impactful on our lives, we can prepare ourselves and our family to enter
the church in this spirit. It is different from entering a museum or a movie theater. We are entering the house of God in
which we become God's People, giving God thanks and praise for God's tremendous love and for the
nourishment we are about to receive.
HOLY WATER:
The first symbol which greets us at the door is water which has been blessed. When we dip our
hand in the water and sign ourselves with it, we can experience a sense that we are entering this
church, re-connecting with our identity as Baptised into Jesus' death and resurrection. If we do this
intentionally, it adds meaning to our journey into the celebration.
GENUFLECTING:
It is a rare and special ritual we do next. When we approach our pew or seats, we look up at the place where the
Eucharist is reserved - usually signified by a red vigil lamp - and we genuflect, recognizing that we are before our God
and Savior. If we really let that gesture have that level of meaning, we will do it consciously, slowly and meaningfuly.
We can also say, "Lord, thank you for your Spirit's drawing me here today. Thank you for the love we are about to
celebrate together." The Eucharist is there as a bridge between celebrations of the Eucharist - the presence of our Lord in
our midst, connecting the last Eucharist with this one. And, we reserve the Eucharist so that we can bring this Sacrament
of Communion to our brothers and sisters who are sick or dying.
