Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Some of you may have noticed the machinery in front of the Church of St. Sylvester this past week. We had to do about $15,000.00 worth of work on the bell tower. We haven’t been using the bells
for a long time because we were advised that ringing them could have resulted in further damage to the
tower. I hope that now all will be well. The money that is donated in the envelopes designated for build-ing maintenance is what we use when we have these extraordinary expenses. And if we don’t keep up
with these kinds of repairs we end up having to pay a lot more one day when the deterioration worsens.
I am hoping to do some work on the parking lot at St. Sylvester’s this summer. We had repaired
some damaged places in the parking lot last year but it looks like we need to do further repairs this sum-mer again. I would also like to re-seal the entire parking lot and possibly paint lines for parking. I am not
sure how much it will cost yet.
At St. John’s in Miltonsburg we did some work on the interior lighting during the Covid-19 shut down and the church looks great. We also repaired a slip alongside the parking area that was getting
worse and worse. We will soon be taking down one of the big trees that is damaging the retaining wall.
These expenses are all taken care of except for the tree removal but I don’t have the cost of that expense yet. I should have it soon.
Last year I indicated that I would like to get a statue of St. Sylvester to put inside the church
since the parish of St. Sylvester is under his heavenly patronage. The cost of such a statue which has to be
fabricated either out of fiber glass or wood depending on how much we want to spend costs between 7,000.00 to 9,000.00 dollars. We have about $2500.00 thus far. If you would like to help out with this
project just write a check and mark on the memo that it is for the statue of St. Sylvester. Thanks to those
who have helped so far.
Down at St. Joseph’s in Burkhardt we are in the process of selling the church property except for
the cemetery if we get permission from the Diocese. The windows, altars, statues, pews, and some odds
and ends of the Church are all gone now leaving pretty much an empty shell. We are in the process of removing the small organ in the choir loft as well. I’ll keep you informed of the progress.
At St. John Bosco in Sardis things are well taken care of and we haven’t had to spend much as
far as maintenance is concerned.
In our school we have had to take a long break from in-school classes of course because of the pandemic but we hope that things can get back to normal this Fall and classes can resume at the school.
We’ll know soon hopefully. We are still paying our teachers however because they have had to work hard
in directing the remote learning of our students. Their contracts stipulate that they are to receive a twelve month salary. That is why we continue to need your assistance year around for the school. Bingo is set to
start up again on July 7th and we hope that that will bring in some money to pay for the school expenses.
Again thank you for helping to keep our school going.
Bishop has given us Pastors permission this year because of the Covid-19 outbreak to administer
the Sacrament of Confirmation. Therefore, I will do so on Saturday, September 19th at the 5:00 p.m.
Mass. Rehearsal will take place on Friday evening, September 18th at 6:30 p.m. We have twenty candi-
dates who will be receiving this important sacrament. Please keep these young people in your prayers. I encourage the candidates to spend these weeks before their confirmation in prayer and study of the faith
so as to be properly disposed to receive what the Lord wants to give them. And I encourage the Sponsors
to spend some time with their candidate and to pray with them to the Holy Spirit as the Apostles did be-fore Pentecost when the Spirit descended upon them and enflamed their desire to serve the Lord no mat-
ter what. In our world today we definitely need the special graces of the Holy Spirit to be courageous in
the practice of our Catholic faith. I encourage those who are able to attend Mass every Sunday even though we are dispensed from the obligation to do so. To tell you the truth, I haven’t seen many young
people at Mass since we resumed public Masses in May. Confessions are being heard as well and so I
hope that everyone will feel free to make a good confession and do all that is possible to protect the faith
from being watered down in this very difficult time.
May the Lord be with all of you!!
Sincerely yours,
Father Timothy Davison

THE BROWN SCAPULAR The scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, also known as the Brown Scapular, is one
of the most popular and celebrated of Roman Catholic devotions. The sacramental (as the lay
faithful commonly use it) is a miniature derivative of the actual brown scapular used by the
Carmelites – the sleeveless outer garment falling from the shoulders which is worn as a sign
of their vocation and devotion.
Our Lady gave St. Simon a scapular for the Carmelites with the following promise,
saying, “Receive, My beloved son, this habit of thy order: this shall be to thee and to all Car-
melites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire…It
shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace.”
