KDSAP in expansion: University of Toronto, Canada
T he University of Toronto (U of T) KDSAP has established in 2011 after its first president Cheryl Cui
participated in KDSAP events during her one-year, 2010-2011, student exchange program to Massachu-
setts Institute of Technology (MIT).
“I feel KDSAP is a very meaningful program and can help a lot of people. This is why I have decided to start
KDSAP at U of T”, said Cui.
After awarded the start up grant from U of T’s Bioengineering Department, Cui successfully recruited 45
members and identified a screening site. During the 5-hour pilot screening, 97 people has been screened.

A Taste of KDSAP: Rutgers University, New Jersey
S arah Chang, a Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) student (class of 2015) of Rutgers Uni-
versity in New Jersey, has been volunteering with KDSAP since 2009 when she was working at the Bos-
ton Children’s Hospital. Chang was inspired by KDSAP’s philosophy: to truly serve the underserved
communities and brought KDSAP to Rutgers. Two kidney health screenings has been held at a Chinese church
near by the school and were very well received.
“To serve -- to truly serve -- is to wash the feet of another without pretext or pretense, without ego or
elaboration. To serve is to look for someone's story in their eyes as you bridge a language barrier. These are
the lessons Dr. Hsiao imparted before we entered the community, and, at April's kidney screening, a group of
dedicated people and I did more than man stations and collect samples -- we served, “ Saurabh Sinha, RWJMS
Class of 2015, gave this quote, after listened to KDSAP founder Dr. Li-Li Hsiao’s lecture and served at the
community kidney health screening.

program for the general public initiated by KDSAP
students. The topics covered by health professionals and a
kidney disease patient for BKHS include: 1)How do
your kidneys function, what causes kidney dis-

About KDSAP The Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP) is created and
founded by Li-Li Hsiao, MD, PhD in March, 2008. The first KDSAP chapter is regis-
tered at Harvard College where Dr. Hsiao has served as the official advisor. KDSAP
has two key objectives: Student career development and Community Outreach.
Dr. Hsiao has created many innovative programs within KDSAP for the benefit of
students. KDSAP offers several speaker series and programs each semester that ex
pose students to the scientific and medical professions and facilitate the development
of mentor-mentee relationships. KDSAP members may also participate in the com-
munity outreach branch: Community Kidney Disease Detection (CKDD). CKDD
runs monthly screening in medically underserved communities per request. KDSAP
members also have opportunities to develop leadership skills through organizing and
managing CKDD screenings while providing kidney health screenings.
KDSAP is one of the first models that strategically targets undergraduate students
early in their educational career to help address the current nephrology workforce
crisis. As of the end of 2011,KDSAP’s existing chapters including: Harvard College,
North Quincy High School and Brookline High School. KDSAP has gained nation-
wide and international attentions and several institutions have requested to start
KDSAP at their institution.
