ROMAN ROADS
BRITAIN : I I
IVAN D. _ARGARY M.A.,F.S.A.
THIS iS the first comprehensive survey of the Roman roads in Britain since the work of Thomas Codrington more than fifty years ago; and the most complete account of the Roman roads of any country in the world.
The result of Mr. Margary's work has been eagerly awaited and his researches have been undertaken with the co-operation of the Council for British Archaeology as a project of importance.
Today Roman roads may appear as existing roads or tracks, or may not be visible from the ground; they may appear on maps or not be recorded at all. The purpose of the present work is to discover how and where the system of Roman roads ran in its heyday; how to identify and trace them; and what we can expect to see if we examine them.
Mr. Margary, who is also the author of Roman Ways in the Weald, has personally travelled all the routes described, and over the years has added much to our knowledge of the subject. His simple and ingenious system of road numbering, and the reference index, enable the reader to find instantly in the text and on the maps a road and its branches in any particular area. Every road has been shown on the maps, which have been specially drawn for the book and include a coloured folding general map.
To allow of more detailed description than has hitherto been possible, Mr. Margary's book is to be published in two volumes, dividing Britain at the line of the Foss Way-Bristol Channel. Volume I covers the country south of that line, and Volume II will follow in 1957.
' The book is one which should be on the shelves not merely of the specialist but also of all who have an interest in the shaping of England and an urge to refresh their history with the open air '-SIR MORTIMER WHEELER (Nature).
