PAST FILMS: 2010 Friday, December 17, 2010, 79:30 PM Film: "JOYEUX NOEL" (116 min, Christian Carion, 2005) In 1914, World War I, the bloodiest war ever at that time in human history, was well under way. However on Christmas Eve, numerous sections of the Western Front called an informal, and unauthorized, truce where the various frontline soldiers of the conflict peacefully met each other in No Man's Land to share a precious pause in the carnage with a fleeting brotherhood. This film dramatizes one such section as the French, British and German sides partake in the unique event, even though they are aware that their superiors will not tolerate its occurrence. A great story of both peace and caution for the holiday season. (Event is FREE and open to the public! ..but Donations are kindly accepted). Friday, December 10, 2010, 6:30 to 9:30 PM (Film at 7PM) TRANSITION FRIDAY! An Evening Focused On Positive Solutions at a Local Level! Is water a commercial good? Or is it a human right like air? WATER ON THE TABLE is powerful new, characterdriven, socialissue documentary thatexplores our relationship to our most precious natural resource. The film intimately shadows Canada’s own water crusader Maude Barlow over the course ofa year during her term as the UN Senior Advisor on Water to the President of the GeneralAssembly. While still giving voice to the powerful interests that insist that water is justanother resource to be bought and sold, it solidly and factually lays out the undeniableconclusion that what is at stake is our very future, and potable water must be included as ahuman right. For more information on the film, go to: www.wateronthetable.comInformational & Resource Sites:Seattle Public Utilities: www.seattle.gov/util/Friends of the Cedar River Watershed: www.cedarriver.orgEarth Systems NW: www.earthsystemsnw.comTransition Seattle: www.transitionseattle.comSustainable Wallingford: www.greenwallingford.ning.comThe Washington Water Trust: www.washingtonwatertrust.orgPrior to the film (6:30), there will be an opportunity to visit with our guests, and watch afilmshort or two. Friday, December 3, 2010, 7:00 to 9:30 PMFilm: “THE MEAN WORLD SYNDROME Media Violence & the Cultivation of Fear” (51min, Jeremy Earp, 2010) A new film based on the late George Gerbner's groundbreaking analysis of media influenceand media violence. For years, debates have raged among scholars, politicians, andconcerned parents about the effects of media violence on viewers. Too often these debateshave descended into simplistic battles between those who claim that media messagesdirectly cause violence and those who argue that activists exaggerate the impact of mediaexposure altogether. THE MEAN WORLD SYNDROME examines how media violence formsa heightened state of insecurity, exaggerated perceptions of risk and danger, and a feardriven propensity for hardline political solutions to social problems. A century ago, railroad tycoon Edward H. Harriman decided to form of one of the mostambitious scientific expeditions the world had ever seen. He invited the top authorities in thecountry: geologists, botanists, foresters, ornithologists, paleontologists, zoologists, painters, photographers, writers to join him on a 9000mile exploration of the coast of Alaska. Over acentury later, Thomas Litwin of Smith College organized an expedition to follow the path ofthe original one. Again, it was stocked with a constellation of scientific brilliance. THEHARRIMAN ALASKA EXPEDITION RETRACED presents a unique look at 100 years ofchange in Alaska, and in American attitudes towards the environment and indigenouspeoples.Download the flyer HERE. This one is notfor the fainthearted, because the combination of documentary and a fictionalized "future" astold by the narrator carries double the impact of a purely factual film. That said, the messageis conveyed creatively and clearly. Pete Postelwaite is entirely believable as the wearyarchivist of the future, who is still in disbelief at the facts available to humanity in 2010 andhow easy it was for even the most wellintentioned of us to ignore them at times.SUSAN DAVIS is the founder of the Tipping Point Network, an informal networkofnetworksfounded in 2006 to catalyze a tipping point in sustainability sectors like organics, renewableenergy, green building and integrative medicine. Using the “Key Initiator Network Strategy”she brought together innovators like Van Jones; Alisa Gravitz of Green America; RayAnderson of Interface Carpet; Ocean Robbins of YES!; Marion Rockefeller Weber of theFlow Fund Circle & many others. Her new book is called A Trojan horse of Love, “theheartfelt story of how, over the last thirty years, 20 tiny groups of leaders have created apowerful new method of innovation to manifest sustainability based on love, trust andgenerosity.” She is a President of Capital Missions Company, an early pioneer of SociallyResponsible Investing with ShoreBank, and a Harvard MBA. The form isa "dramaticdocumentarymusicalsatire" and the content is our country's most taboo topic:Class, Power and Privilege in our nominally democratic republic. We have to ask, alongwith host and screen writer Mr. Lewis Lapham: "To what end the genius of the Wall Streetbanks and the force of the Pentagon's colossal weapons? Where does America discover thewisdom to play with its wonderful toys?" Friday, February 26, 2010, 7:00 to 9:30 PMFilm: “THE DIAMOND EMPIRE” (102 min, Janine Roberts, 1994)This astonishing documentary investigates how an advertising slogan invented by MadisonAvenue executives in 1948 has come to define our most intimate and romantic rituals andideals. THE DIAMOND EMPIRE, which sent shockwaves through the transnational diamondindustry when it first appeared, systematically takes apart the myth that "diamonds areforever." It exposes how one white South African family, through a process of monopoly and fantasy, managed to exert control over the global flow of diamonds and change the very way wethink about courtship, marriage, and love an achievement all the more stunning given thatdiamonds are in fact neither scarce nor imperishable. Zeroing in on how "the diamondempire" managed to convert something valueless into one of the most coveted commoditiesin history, the film provides a riveting look at how marketing and consumer culture shape notonly global trade and economics, but also our very identities.(Event is FREE and open to the public! ...but Donations are kindly accepted

Her outrage and determination fueled a political chainreaction that forever changed the lives of older Americans, repealing mandatory retirementlaws and proving that "old" is not a dirty word. With a disarming mixture of humor, shock value and common sense, Maggie went on tochampion universal health care, nursing home reform, shared housing and consumerprotection. Out of what political activist Ralph Nader called "the most significant retirementin modern American history," Maggie created one of the most potent social movements ofthe century one that was committed to justice, peace and fairness to all, regardless of age.
