Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time— Veinteavo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Mission Statement Through the teachings of Jesus Christ and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we, as Catholic Christians, strive to teach our youth, evangelize our community and renew our faithful. We will promote the principles of the Catholic Church through Scripture, Sacraments, prayer, almsgiving and penance — helping each other to seek eternal salva-tion with God in heaven.
If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and chil-dren, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

The Tactics of the Enemy Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I don’t go to the movie theater very often, but recently I went and was astonished at the previews for the upcoming movies. (Have you noticed the previews last forever?). Well, I was surprised because it seemed like every other movie was a movie that dealt with demonic possession. This is sick and it is scary. It used to just be “The Exorcist” and that was the only movie. Now many are being released. It can cause us as Catholics to wonder what we really believe about the devil. I recommend a book by C.S. Lewis called “The Screwtape Letters” to understand the tactics of satan and his demons. But we have to always remember that the only power satan has is the power we give him. Many of the saints write that the devil is like the general of army who is laying siege to a walled city, who keeps looking for holes in our defenses, trying to breach the walls and destroy us. But, as St. Francis de Sales tells us, “Let the Enemy rage at the gate, let him knock, let him push, let him cry, let him howl, let him do worse; we know for certain that he cannot enter, save by the door of our consent.” This metaphor helps us understand Satan and his tactics, but we must distinguish his “ordinary” and his “extraordinary” activity: The most common “ordinary” activity of Satan is to put ideas — thoughts — in our minds in order to influence our reason, memory, imagination and ultimately our will. The kinds of thoughts that the Devil tries to tempt us with are: deception (lies to distort the truth); accusation (to make us feel worth-less); doubt (to diminish our faith); enticements (attract us to want something God forbids or to obtain them through illicit means); and provocation (to put ourselves in “the near occasion of sin” so that we will fall). Not all temptations are from the devil. Some can be from our own weakness, but the devil will at-tack where we are weak. The “extraordinary” manifestations of the devil’s work are where he is in the physical world. The most common is an “infestation” of a place. I get calls all the time from people — often times non-Catholics — asking me to bless their house because it is haunted. (Funny enough, I never get calls from people saying, “Father, please come to my house to pray with me. I have angels in my house.” Ra-ther, it is always an invitation to drive out evil spirits.) Then there is “oppression” of the devil, which are demonic attacks on a victim’s exterior life, for example, influences on their bodily health, finances, work situation, and family and other social relations. It may even include physical assaults. “Obsession” with the devil refers to a more severe and relentless form of the struggle in the victim’s interior life, a wres-tling with disturbing thoughts planted by the Enemy. And then, of course, there is “possession” by a de-mon (or by the devil) which is not exactly like a Hollywood movie. Possession is when a demon takes over a person’s body and occasionally makes them act, although the victim is not normally aware this is happening. However, a demon can never “possess” someone in the sense of “owning” a person. All human beings belong to God and are His personal possessions. The power of Christ is so much greater than that of Satan. God’s power is infinitely greater than that of the demons. As Catholics, the best way to avoid the power of Satan is to never engage in Ouija boards, witchcraft, sorcery, fortune-telling, séances and the like. If we know of evil manifestations of the devil in our lives or in the lives of our loved ones, we should never refer them to curanderos to do so-called “white magic.” We must go to the Church (and refer others to the Church), because only the pow-er of Jesus Christ can cure us of our evil and keep us from the grasp of the evil one. In fact, the grace of Jesus is like a whipping cord to drive out the power of the evil one in our hearts. We need to let the zeal for Jesus consume us and never, never, never give up the fight!
Yours in Christ, Fr. Lowry

Lowry
