An Autobiography of a Vocation: Chapter XVI
I will conclude with saying that by the end of my studies at St. Joseph’s Seminary I knew that all I really wanted
to be was a pastor of a parish, a father to the people entrusted to my care.
My call to be a priest – check.
My call to be a pastor – check.
The only thing now is to be a saint. Not a canonize saint. I am not even concerned with people recognizing me
as saintly, I simply want to go directly to Heaven when I die. I want to avoid purgatory. I want to see my Lord,
rest my head upon His chest as St. John did at the last supper, bask in His mercy for certainly when I am in heav-
en it will be because of His mercy and I will glorify it for all eternity. I want to see the Face of God and be lost in
the infinite depths of the mystery of the most Holy Trinity. I want to see Mary, the mother of my Lord and my
mother. I want to see all the loved ones who have gone before me. I want to be at rest and peace and be able to
say as St. Paul, I have finished the race and I have won. Remember my saying “I am not what I appear to be be-
cause I am striving to become what I am not”? If I appear “holy”, know I do not count myself as such. Yes, if I
am in the state of grace, I am holy, but not as I ought to be, especially as a priest – to whom much is given, much
will be expected. If the Lord should call me now, have many masses said for me for I am sure I will be in Purga-
tory. We are to judge no one, this means to Heaven or Hell – only our Lord makes that judgment. I am not even
judging myself, but only expressing what I expect. It would be presumptuous of me to expect Heaven and des-
pair to expect Hell when all I have to do is to call upon His mercy with a true intent of repentance.
My transition back to my home diocese of Rochester is only a part of this final vocation, to get to heaven, be-
cause I know the only way is following our Lord’s will. If I am wrong in discerning this as His will, then I will
be back, but if it is His will, may I follow to where He calls. Peace of soul is essential in discerning and our Lord
has granted me that. Joy is the fruit and the sure sign of God’s will. A vocation is a calling to follow the will of
the Lord. It requires a dying to one’s own will. It requires sacrifice. Just as it is in the vocation of marriage.
When it is offered in love, it bears the fruit of Joy. I have found immense joy in following the will of the Lord:
St. Mary’s in Washingtonville, as parochial vicar, teacher at Cardinal Hayes High School, pastor at Good Shep-
herd in Rhinebeck. The joy of being a pastor and becoming truly a father to the people under my care more than
compensates for the sacrifice of marriage and children. But God’s will was that I must move on and become pas-
tor and father for the people of St. Patrick’s in Armonk. I could not imagine that I could be filled with that joy
again like I had at Good Shepherd and yet, “wow”, in six short years I am overflowing with joy. This is the fruit
of doing God’s will. I did not want to leave Good Shepherd and I did not want to come to St. Patrick’s but God
knew better. Now I can honestly say I don’t want to leave St. Patrick’s. But for the certainty that God is calling
me to make this move, I would not. I love you all dearly as a pastor and as a father and the joy that God has
granted me has come through you. But now my Lord calls me to move on so that I might obtain that final call-
ing. While it is difficult and painful to leave, as I said earlier I am at peace and the sadness at my departure does
not negate the six years of joy in serving you. Each joy I receive builds upon the previous, and I expect or at
least hope, that in the end, with all the places the Lord will have called me to serve, the joy will be so great, only
to be exceeded in the final call, the final home of Heaven. This is my hope and prayer for myself and for you.
As always,
In Jesus and Mary,

Fall 2019
BLAZE is coming to
St. Patrick’s
Blaze is the Walking with Purpose ministry for 7
th
and 8
th
grade girls. It was created to counteract the
way our society drives girls to question their identity,
worth and beauty. Girls in their tween/teen years are
filled with questions. They have doubts, they desire
clarification, and they want to share their thoughts in
a space that will allow them to make their relation-
ship with God personal and meaningful.
Beginning in Fall 2019, the girls will meet twice per
month for a one hour session. As the girls are
introduced to the Bible in a relevant and fresh way,
they will hear Jesus telling them how loved and
beautiful they are!
