Creation Care Ministry News As we approach Thanksgiving may we remember to pray for the many workers who enable the feast that comes to our tables. Turkeys from ranches, cranberries from bogs, potatoes and green beans from farms, corn or wheat all require labor at each step of growth, harvest, processing, shipping, unpacking, and display before we place into our shopping cart. May we pray for the Earth’s good soil and well-timed rains unhindered by climate change. May we pray that the Poor be fed and filled. “As long as the earth lasts, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). See you at the Creation Care table November 23-24! We will have sign-up sheets for plots in the St. Thomas More Garden for All Seasons. The cost to build a raised bed plot is about $250 and irrigation costs will be about $10 per month.

PIES. PIES. PIES. It’s that time of year again when we celebrate the blessings God has provided us in the past year. While we feast at Thanksgiving including home baked pies, others are not so fortunate. Through your generosity in the past, STM has provided desserts for Bro Benno’s Thanksgiving dinner as we will this year...but we are expanding our outreach to include Operation Hope for abused women and children and La Posada House, a residence for men. Your help is needed for APPLE and PUMPKIN PIES. Please be generous and bring them to the Parish Office November 27, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, between 8:00am and 12:00noon.

St. Bonaventure Clothing Drive THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. You outdid yourselves! A FULL truck load of clothing made it to the Mission. It will go to provide much needed items, free, to some of the poorest in our nation...the Navajo. Your generosity is awesome! The collection was so successful that the truck was filled and departed for New Mexico before the 1:00pm Mass. BUT, it will be back soon to load up again and take the items donated at the 1:00pm Mass and in the Parish Office during the week! Thank you to the Youth who schlepped all the extra items to temporary storage in the Parish Center. A special thanks, also, to our Knights for providing the muscle to load the truck. We could not do it without their help. —Deacon Tom

Next week is the First Sunday of Advent. As we look ahead to a new church year, I share this from one of the wiser people I have known. A Church periodical I once read suggested we should have a “someday week,” because there are already so many observances during the year in behalf of this, that and the other thing. Why not one more? The article also said that scarcely a week passed that one does not say, “Someday we’ll…” Someday is the day we are going to take our family or just the grandchildren to the Zoo, or Sea World, or Disneyland. Our someday is the day we are going to turn off our TV and read a good book so that we will really learn something new. What would this world be like today if the apostles had answered our Lord’s call to follow him by saying, “Someday?” We have all heard friends say, “How good life is going to be someday, when I can finally retire.” I retired 24 years ago, but I am still an active person who enjoys life each day and I look forward to each new day. Instead of someday, now is the acceptable time to become more involved in the life of your parish Church or Cathedral. Please don’t think of the Church as a pyramid with your rector (pastor) or vicar at the pinnacle. Rather think of your Church as a circle with Jesus Christ in the center and a community of clergy and laity together, gathered around ministering to each other. The reason we gather each week in God’s house is to scatter—to go out and bring others into Christ’s holy fellowship. St. Francis of Assisi once wrote, “You may be the only Gospel your neighbor will ever hear.” Yes, what we do often speaks louder than what we say. Perhaps it is you who will

be the only one to carry Jesus’ message to someone who knows him not. Why was there such tremendous power in the early Church? Because all the followers of Christ understood that they had a ministry to perform. When the Church began to place the responsibility for ministry on the ordained professionals it was no longer the salt of the earth or the light of the world. Problems that do occur in churches may well stem from our attitude of just coming to get, rather than coming to give. Christ’s ministry through us begins once we really become concerned for others we know who are ill or lonely and in need of help or support. St. Paul once said for us to live our lives now and not to wait for that someday. We must share our joys and sorrows as well as life’s triumphs and defeats. Our Lord asked Simon, Andrew, James, and John to leave a profitable business and follow him. As we seek to follow Christ in today’s world, we must mirror the concern that the Church is essential to God’s plan of salvation. We can lead a good life apart from Christ, but not a Christian life. Once I saw a child on TV dig deep into a peanut butter jar and bring out a mound of glistening goodness and spread it on a piece of bread and then bite into it. This ad really caught my eye as I, too, am addicted to peanut butter. But, this reminded me of many other commercials—a fork full of fluffy pancakes, dripping with syrup; chocolate stretching from the end of a candy bar; pizza with cheese melting, a double-decker hamburger with a bite missing. All say, “Taste and see how good it is.”

T F S

Then I began to wonder if we are not all living commercials, because the things we do and say sell something all day long; be it assurance, doubt, fear, faith, discouragement, anger, peace, or love. As Christians we are doing God’s commercials for the best product in the world. There is no one who doesn’t need it. What is our product: Christ’s Gospel. This means that we must be willing to offer more than lip service to the problems of unemployment, undernourishment, and inadequate housing. Once we show forth in our lives what we believe in our hearts, a new spirit will develop in this community. Our responsibility is to know the Christ and to make him known. Remember that the seeds of tomorrow are sown today. What the world needs to see in you and me is Christ as we radiate his love. Not on the Feast of Someday, but now!

Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

Dear Brothers & Sisters, I would like to take a minute as we make our way towards the end of Stewardship Renewal Month. We have been reminded that stewardship is spirituality! The giving of ourselves in various ministries helps us grow spiritually, and helps others grow as well. I personally grew up with the concept of Time, Talent, and Treasure being a focal point of my upbringing. My husband Josh and I, knowing that we had little Treasure, have focused raising our children on giving our Time and stretching our Talents. While we have not always been confident about our Talents, we knew Time was always something we could offer. Throughout the years what that looked liked has always differed. We know what a struggle it can be at times to keep our focus on helping out the Church. Through prayer and determination we strive to focus on being good Stewards. I want to say thank you to those who have volunteered their time and support to the children of our Parish! Working with children, no matter what the age, is an amazing feeling. By becoming stewards (volunteers) in our REACH program, not only is it a wonderful way to explore your own Faith, but rewarding in the response the children give you. We are still in urgent need of stewards (volunteers) to help our young people grow spiritually. Preschool, Middle School, and High School teams are trying their best. But we still have need of volunteers at each level! Please take the time to sincerely pray about giving of your Time and Talent to helping the youth of our Parish. You have so much to offer! Email [email protected] or call the Office.

Bible Study News

STM’s NEW Youth Band for Middle School, High School, Young Adults and beyond will meet on Wednesdays from 6:00-7:30pm in the Parish Center

Lower Level. There is space for you to participate in Praise Music where you are comfortable. We are looking for Potential singers and instrumentalists, whether singing or playing in the background or leading up front we have a spot for you! We are flexible and accommodating, and we always have a way to fit you in. We’ll begin playing and singing in Church December 24. See you Wednesday @ 6:00pm!

This next Bible Study will start on January 9 and end on February 19. Paul’s letter to the Galatians speaks directly to the heart of Christians and addresses the most important question we can ask: “What must we do to be saved?” It speaks of the extraordinary gift of salvation that Jesus has won for us, and how we can unite ourselves to Christ’s redeeming sacrifice. In Galatians, we learn what it means to have this filial relationship with God the Father, how he honors us as his children, and how we must honor him as our loving Father. You can also join to study at home at your own time. Ask Patt Goeltz how. Please see Patt Goeltz at [email protected] for more information.

STM Young Adults in your 20s, single or married—Join us for Bible Study. The book of Matthew brings the history of Christ to life. We see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who fulfills the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament, establishes the New Law, and inaugurates the Kingdom of Heaven. Matthew: The King and His Kingdom, on Mondays at 7:00pm in the Parish Center Upper Level. Contact Rory Griffin at [email protected].

Towers of Faith is a movement that has arisen due to the vision, leadership and generosity of several of our Parishioners. We stress that this is about the love and thought behind the gift, and not about the gift amount.

These individuals (several anonymous) have included STM in their estate planning. This helps to ensure their ongoing support and a legacy for our Parish. Towers of Faith is a valuable portion of our future support.

Examples of the various future planning vehicles are:

Designated Beneficiary Accounts, Wills, Living Trusts, Life Insurance, Stocks and Bonds, Real Estate, and

STM Endowment with CCFSD (Catholic Community Foundation of San Diego)

Parishioners who have already included STM in their estate plans are Towers of Faith participants. If you are interested, please contact us. Your participation is most welcome and appreciated!

Gracious and loving God,

As the autumn season continues its transformation; and the days become shorter, the earth cooler;

as we anticipate joining family and friends in joyful celebration on Thanksgiving Day,

we pause to give You thanks and praise for the abundant blessings You

have bestowed upon us:

For life and health, safety and comfort, food and nourishment, we are sincerely grateful.

Through your Spirit, open our hearts so that we may be even better stewards

of these rich and unmerited gifts.

Show us how to be a blessing for the poor, sick, lonely and all who suffer.

And help us nurture the gift of faith, revealed to us by your Son, Jesus Christ,

our greatest gift, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,

one God forever and ever. Amen.

Sacrificial Giving Sacrificial Giving is the process of consciously examining one’s household income and making a decision to give a percentage of it to the Church. If the “leap of faith” of tithing seems to be too great for you, we ask that you consider the “gradual approach.” Please examine and review not only the dollar amount that you presently give to St. Thomas More, but the percentage of your gross household income that dollar amount represents. When you add up all your gifts to St. Thomas More, what percentage is that amount of your gross household income? Maybe it is ½%, 1%, 3%, or more? You are encouraged to increase it by a percentage each year until you have made that leap of Faith and are tithing. Remember that the Lord is never outdone in generosity. Pray that more and more of us are willing to be challenged by the Biblical directive to give back to the Lord a tithe of all that we have and are.

Saint Thomas More Stewardship Renewal and Commitment Month Director of Stewardship Talk— November 23-24, 2019 Hello, I’m Kim Wright, Director of Stewardship here at STM. And I’d like to talk to you about Stewardship Renewal and Commitment Month. This year’s theme is: “STEWARDSHIP IS SPIRITUALITY”! Over the past two weekends you have heard two beautiful stories of Faith and Spirituality. The Williams Family told us “How they became Catholic – that point in your life when you become chosen by God.” And Fr Mike told of the moment, “when he realized that he was no longer praying, that he had “stopped talking to God” and of his return to conversation with Jesus, saying: “Jesus, I open my mind, my heart, and my soul to you…talk to me…let’s begin a conversation…I want to be your Disciple…I want to continue your mission and your ministry for this time and this place.” … Didn’t they just inspire you to be more, to do more, as you continue your journey in Faith? In this season of Thanksgiving and with Grateful hearts, we also: take time to thank and express our gratitude to ALL

those who have graciously served in this past year and we take time to challenge ourselves to look into our

own hearts and souls and prayerfully determine how we would like to renew our Faith commitments to God, ourselves, and to STM.

At this time, we would like to recognize those who have “cheerfully” given of their Time, Talent, and/or Treasurer. While we would like to acknowledge all of you by name, I’m afraid we’d be here all day... What a Blessing! Know that we know who you are, and more importantly, know that God knows who you are. I’d like to ask EVERYONE to please stand. Just by being here, you are serving and making our Parish, the wonderful Faith Community that it is. Please look around, be recognized, and give yourselves (and each other) a well-deserved round of applause! All of us, together, make up the St Thomas More Faith Community, our Church Family! It is because of YOU, that we are here today, “unfinished”… but fulfilling the mission of St Thomas More: “To worship God, teach and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and serve God’s people in word and deed.” Thank you! Thank you! And thank you! (Please be seated!) Learning from Fr Mike, I’d like to share a little story with you. It’s a “St Peter” story, that goes like this:

Page 14: Pastor’s Column...2019/11/24  · Prayer List (Call 760-758-4100 x102 to add a name for four weeks.) Gunnery Sgt. Fernando Andrade, Jr. Lt. Devon Czarzasty Major Branden M. Felker,

Miss Mary Clark was the wealthiest woman in the small Virginia town of Clarkesville. Never married, she lived alone, in a mansion on top of the highest hill in town. She attended Church occasionally, although she never pledged- for she believed in a “freewill offering”. Driven by her chauffeur, she attended church every Christmas and Easter. When the plate was passed, she would proudly put her crisp new $100 bill on top of the collection. But that was all she ever gave. When the new wing at the church school was being built, the Vestry came to her for a major gift; they were trying to raise $200,000 for the project. She proudly gave her share of $1,000 and was so proud of it. When the new library was being built in town, she gave $100, and was insulted when nothing was named after her. At age 84, God called her home. Her estate of $5 million dollars all went to a distant niece, whom she had last seen 20 years ago, and who was married to a heart surgeon. When she arrived in heaven, St. Peter picked her up in the heavenly bus to take her to her new home. She drove past mansions, which she thought were fitting for a person of her station; but she was shocked to see her kind and generous maid, one of the most giving members of her community, living in one of them. And the bus kept going, passing through a section of modest houses-one occupied by a teacher from the high school; and continued past some row houses-one occupied by her childhood pastor; and finally, down a dirt road to a ramshackle house with no doors or windows and an unfinished roof. Miss Mary Clark was indignant. In her best upper-class pride, she asked, “What is the meaning of this outrage?” St. Peter responded, “This is the best we could do with what you sent up!” In the early church, Paul encourages the Corinthians (and us) to be generous, saying: The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. -2 Corinthians 9:6-8 Stewardship Renewal is a grace-filled time for spiritual growth for all of us, individually and for the parish as a whole. We are a Church family. And like our families at home, we all have responsibilities and obligations to help out; whether it is taking out the trash, washing the dishes, mowing the lawn, or making our beds. It takes everyone in the family, working together and sharing the work load, to keep our homes in order. The same is true in our Church family; the trash needs to be taken out, the landscape needs maintained, the kitchen area needs picked up, the bulletins printed, the worship aids assembled, the prayers said, the poor clothed and fed. And like at home, someone needs to pay the bills … There, I said it! J Well folks, that’s you and me, and thee and thou! We are the “Heads of our Church Household”, the Parish breadwinners. Have you cleared your hearts, souls, and minds of the needless clutter? You’ll find Stewardship Renewal Commitment Cards in this weekend’s bulletins, in the Parish Lobby, on our website, even in the restrooms. You can’t miss them. Please take some time in the next coming weeks to review, complete and return

#iGiveCatholic I am happy to announce St. Thomas More’s partnership with #iGiveCatholic. Now in its fifth year, the #iGiveCatholic Giving Day is celebrated annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving Day (#Giving Tuesday), a global day dedicated to giving back. #GivingTuesday is an annual day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end of year giving. #iGiveCatholic is a 24-hour online giving event to be held this year on Tuesday, December 3, 12:00am-11:59pm CST. Everyone will have the opportunity to go online and make a gift to St. Thomas More Parish. In making this gift, you are supporting this Parish and its organizations that have and continue to shape your soul! As I indicated in my Financial Update at all the Masses on the weekend of September 21-22, we are successfully addressing our financial difficulties, and we need the continued support of all our Parishioners as we “even the keel of the ship.” The Finance Council has been pro-active, and we have shown Parishioners ways in which special gifts, over and above the Offertory Collection and the Seasons Campaign, can be made especially for the #iGiveCatholic Campaign. The Special Ops Projects would be a great way in which to direct your special gift during this Season of Giving. In the bulletin, on the Director of Development page, Ron Briseno will give weekly results of what has been raised and what still needs to be raised for these special projects. For your convenience, you can make your donation in these ways: 1. By coming into the Parish Office and meet with Ron

Briseno, our Business Manager/Director of Development

2. #iGiveCatholic Campaign envelopes will be attached on the Bulletin the weekend of November 16-17. These may be used to make your #iGive Catholic donation

3. Go online anytime between November 18 and December 2, www.stmoside.org/igive

4. Or make your donation online on Tuesday, December 3, #iGiveCatholic Giving Day.

I am asking that everyone to go “over and above” and make this one-time special gift to our Parish on #GivingTuesday. As always, your generosity is most appreciated! On #Giving Tuesday, go online to #iGiveCatholic and make that gift of love to support STM which has and continues to shape our souls! Go to: www.stmoside.org/igive and click on “donate.” Thank You!
