Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His St. Anthony Family. A Holy Community through Holy Communion! Your brother in Jesus,

The “Saint of the Week” is from the “Blessed Among Us” features that are written by Robert Ellsberg, author of numerous books, including the newly released Blessed Among Us.

Joke of the Week

Saint of the Week Blessed Titus Brandsma

Carmelite Martyr (1881-1942) Titus Brandsma was a Dutch Carmelite priest. In the 1930’s he was named by the bishops of Holland as spiritual advisor to the nation’s several; dozen Catholic newspapers. When the Nazis invaded Hol-land in 1940, Brandsma was at the center of an in-tense discussion in the Church regarding the level of resistance to be offered to the new regime. Brandsma spoke fot the majority who opposed any compromise with the Nazi order. In December 1941 an edict declared that all Dutch newspapers were obliged to run Nazi adver-tisements and propaganda. Brandsma met person-ally with the editors iof each Catholic newspaper to explain why it was impossible to comply with such an edict. He was arrested on January 19, 1942, and even-tually sent to Dachau, home at the time to another 2.700 imprisoned clergy. There he endured weeks of brutal treatment, all the while maintaining his prayerful equilibrium. “We are here,” he said, “in a dark tunnel. We must pass through it. Somewhere at the end shines the eternal life.” As his health deteriorated, he was dispatched to the hospital, a center for sadistic medical experi-mentation. There on July 26 he was killed by a le-thal injection of acid. In 1985 Titus Brandsma was beatified by Pope John Paul ll, the first victim of the Nazis to be officially declared a martyr. “I see God in the work of his hands and the marks of his love in every visible thing, and it sometimes hap-pens that I am seized by a supreme joy which is above all other joys.” —Blessed Titus Brandsma

Christmas Eve - Candlelight Masses 4:00 PM & 12 Midnight

Christmas morning 8:30 AM & 10:15 AM

Her class assignment was to interview an “old person” about his life, so my niece asked me, “What was the biggest his-torical event that happened during your childhood?” “I’d have to say the moon walk,” I replied. She looked disappointed. “That dance was so important to you?”

Gaudete / Rejoice! Sunday The third week of Advent begins with Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete, meaning “Rejoice,” is the first word of the opening antiphon for the Mass on this day; Gaudete in Domino semper (Rejoice in the Lord always). The joy of Gaudete Sunday shows in the use of rose as the liturgical color—for example, on the Advent wreath. The Gospel readings for this Sunday re-veal to us the reason for our joy: the coming of Jesus. He is the Word made flesh, the Christ, the Son of the living God. Lord, I rejoice at the Good news of Your Coming. Make my heart ready.

Third Week of Advent Wreath Prayer Our hope is in the coming of the Lord. (two purple and one pink candle are lit) Let us pray that we may grow in love for each other as the Lord comes to us. (pause for silent prayer) Renew us in Your love, Lord, for with You we have nothing to fear. You provide light for our darkness and warmth in the cold winter air. We sing Your praises for all You have done for us. May we approach this holy Christmas season with a true spirit of gratitude. Amen.

An Advent Reflection Expectation was high for the Mes-siah’s coming; in fact, many asked John the Baptist whether he was the Messiah. But as he explained to the crowds who gathered, his water was no match for the fire of the Holy Spirit to come. John issued a warning, how-ever: “every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire” (v. 3). This prompted the worried listeners to ask, “What then should we do?” In your Advent prayer, ask yourself, “What then should I do?” When you act with the intention of preparing for the Christ, the possibilities for the fruit that you might bear are endless. With God, nothing is impossible!

Advent Prayer of the Week Thank You, God, for all of Your blessings, especially for the people in my life. Please help me to stay on the Advent path, and keep my heart focused on Christ in all that I say and do as I pre-pare for His holy birth at Christmas. Share with family or someone why I rejoice today: Jesus moments.
