WillowwoodFALL OPEN HOUSE

We all want a garden that looks great 12 months a year. So,

why do we tend to plant for spring only? Tulips, daffodils,

and spring flowering trees bring joy after the winter

months, but their charms are short-lived. Start learning ways to create

an autumn garden at Willowwood Arboretum’s Fall Open House on

Sunday, October 4, from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

There are fall blooming bulbs and trees that flower in autumn

when others are already losing their leaves. However, the true secret

to a successful fall garden is understanding a plant’s life cycle and

incorporating those changes into your garden design. Bark, twig, and

ripened seed capsules can be winning design components. Coordinate

these changes, and you will have a fabulous fall garden.

Guided tours of Willowwood’s garden, resplendent with these

changes, are offered throughout the day. Observe and learn, then re-

think your fall garden aesthetic to include plant decline, dormancy,

and even death, for a layered effect, rich in hue, texture, andmovement.

Light refreshments are provided by the Willowwood Foundation.

The cost of this program is $5 per car. Please bring exact change.

Reservations are not required for this program. Should the weather be

questionable, please call.

For information and weather updates, please call

 973.326.7601.

SeedlingsPlant the seeds for the love of nature in your child! Seedlings,

a new program at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris

Township, is specifically designed for children ages 3 to 4. Every

Monday morning, preschoolers and their adult caregivers discover

the wonders of nature in a safe and supervised setting. Each week

features a different theme based on the changing seasons and what

is growing in the gardens.

Under the direction of Gwen Montgomery, Senior Program

Horticulturist, we’ll begin with story time under the Story Tree

and complete the class with a 5-senses outdoor exploration of theArboretum. Ms. Montgomery, for 17 years, has taught children

how to ‘see’ the natural world and be comfortable in nature.

“Theme-based learning is appropriate for children this age as it

engages their multiple intelligences,” she said. Themes include

changing leaves, hibernation, plant life cycles, and seeds. It’s an

opportunity for parents and caregivers to socialize, too. So, start

your week out right with Monday mornings at Seedlings.

This program runs Monday, October 5 through November 23,

10 a.m. to 11 a.m. rain or shine. The cost is $75 per child

for 7 classes and includes Family Membership inThe Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum. If

you are already a Family Member, the fee is $40.

 For more information, please call

 973.631.5004.

Celebrate Lenape Day at the Great Swamp!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 3, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. to spend a fun-

filled afternoon learning about the history and culture of the native people of New

Jersey at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township. Many

people mistakenly believe that the Lenape no longer exist, but at this unique event, you can meet

present-day Native Americans of the Ramapough Lenape and discover the ways their lives have

changed over hundreds of years. For thousands of years, before the pioneers arrived in the area, the Lenape Indians lived in these

forests, hunting for deer and bear, living in wigwams, fashioning dugout canoes from tulip

poplar trees, and carving their tools out of rock and bone. They lived close to the land, existing

in balance with nature. And now you can take part in a Lenape Celebration!

Bring the entire family to see the Ramapough Lenape tribe present a traditional drum circle,

dancers in regalia, handicrafts vendors, authentic tools and artifacts from hundreds of years

ago, and a historical speaker and storyteller, all gathered around a model wigwam in the forest.

Everyone can enjoy activities and crafts, such as molding a clay pot by the fire, making a fire

without matches, and playing the real games that Lenape children played to hone their skills.

Take a guided walk on the wooded trails to discover how the Lenape used local plants to meettheir needs for medicine, food, housing, and tools! Explore the interior of the wigwam, set

up as it would have been hundreds of years ago.

Admission is $5 per person age 3 and up.

Rain or shine.

 A Civil War Christmas

on the Home Front and the Soldiers’ Encampment

Experience holiday life during the Civil War both on the home front and at a soldier’s winter encampment at Historic Speedwell in Morristown, from

12 noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, and Sunday, December 6, 12 noon to 4 p.m.

The 2nd  NJ Brigade soldiers prepare camp for the holiday season away from home,

including food preparation outside authentically reproduced huts. Winter huts are built to

house some of the troops and provide extra warmth, while other soldiers sleep in traditional

fly tents. Burning fires keep the lonely soldiers warm, but also help cook their special

holiday meal. Just outside the carriage house, the troops write letters home to their loved

ones, and receive holiday care packages from home. A small tree found in the local woods

is decorated with popcorn and dried fruit, providing a touch of home.

On the home front at the historic Vail

house, listen to the family read actual

letters from Union troops written to their

loved ones. Experience the family’s

reaction to the diaries and letters. Visit

the Vail Home decorated to the mid-19th

century, and see how a home from the

same period as the Civil War was prepared

for the holidays with simple, yet elegant

decorations and a formal, set table for aholiday meal.

Officer’s BallYou are invited to attend a Civil War era Of ficer’s

Ball recreated in the 1849 Carriage House at Historic

Speedwell. Period fiddle music fills the air, and you can

either dance or pull up a bale of hay and tap your feet

inside the festively decorated room with fresh pine and

ribbons. Watch how Civil War of ficers in their best dress

uniforms invite women clad in all their finery to dance.

An authentic period dance instructor teaches re-enactors

and visitors how to properly dance these historic pieces.

Take part in a traditional holiday craft workshop, and

make a craft to take home. Taste hot mulled cider and

cookies as you warm up near the outdoor fire. The

Friends of Historic Speedwell Gift Shop is filled with

unique holiday decorations, gifts, and stocking stuffers!

Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors (65+), and $5

children ages 4 to 16.

Morris Park

Alliance Update

Congratulations to the Stein team for coming in first placein the Morris Park Alliance Golf Outing held at Berkshire

Valley Golf Course on June 16! The team of Joel Stein, Dave

Amlen, Jim Lombardi, and Dave Dennison each received a beautiful

Tiffany & Company crystal bowl. Funds raised this year support the

All Access Playground shade structures located at Central Park of

Morris County in Parsippany, and new exhibits at the Great Swamp

Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township. Both are facilities

of the Morris County Park Commission.

The Park Alliance recently received two grants from generous

area businesses. Recreational Equipment Incorporated (REI) is

supporting enhancements and repairs to the overnight campground

area at Lewis Morris County Park in Morris Township with a grant

of $20,000! Bayer Foundation is providing $2,000 for the planting

of pollinator attractive plants in the Cooperative Garden at Central

Park of Morris County. Encouraging the pollinators, bees and

butter flies, to visit gardens is a very important goal as their numbers

decline throughout the region.

You can support programs and facilities of the Morris County

Park Commission, or donate for general support of the Park Alli-

ance, by contacting Denise Lanza at [email protected] or

973.326.7615. Recognizing the importance of parks to life in Morris

County is a position shared by all.
