additional chapter and an appendix, the latter providing further information regarding the fate
of other members of the expedition. The first edition was published in French in Montreal in 1820.
The book is the most important source on John Jacob Astor's attempt in 1811 to establish the
first American settlement on the Pacific Coast. Franchère, then in the employ of the Pacific Fur
Company, was attached to Astor's expedition to the Columbia River to found a trading post at
Astoria. His narrative describes the difficult voyage out in the Tonquin, by way of Cape Horn, and
presents a faithful chronicle of events at Astoria from its founding until its surrender to the
Northwest Company in 1813. It includes an account of the author's five month overland return
journey three years later, up the Columbia River, through the Rockies and across the Canadian
prairies to Montreal It was the basis for Washington Irving's more famous novel, Astoria.

"The letters printed here are, with few exceptions, addressed to James Hargrave. They were
written at posts from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Pacific coast, and from the southern
limits of the Hudson's Bay Territory to the Arctic circle. They form what is probably a unique
chronicle of the north and west in the days before newspapers. An attempt has been made
to choose letters that throw light on the conditions of the country, the conduct of the trade,
and the life of the traders. Since the letters are private, they reveal much that was necessarily
omitted from official correspondence". Introduction.

In the early 1900s, Morice established a printing operation from a cabin behind his church at
Fort St. James, communicating with the outside world via the post office at Quesnel, and he
produced a collection of his essays, printed in British Columbia, by his own Stuart Lake
Mission Press, in 1902. Hence an argument can be made that British Columbia's first truly
independent publishing house was at Fort St. James and Father Morice began the tradition
of self publishing in British Columbia.

Hudson's Bay territory to Canada. It was comprised of 400 British regular forces and 800 Ontario
and Quebec militiamen. The expedition left Toronto in May 1870 and hoped to restore order and
relieve Fort Garry which had been seized by Louis Riel after the Red River Rebellion. In August the
expedition arrived to find Fort Garry deserted. The British force returned to Ontario and left the
militia to garrison the community. Riddell was an officer of the 60th Rifles in the expedition.
