PATRIOT LEAGUE NOTEBOOKLAFAYETTE HOPING TO AVOID A REPEATLafayette has been picked to finish last in the Patriot League preseason poll in eachof the past three seasons, but for the second time in three years the Leopards are offto a 5-1 start and leading the League through six games. Lafayette hopes the simil-iarities to the 2008 team end there, as the Leopards lost seven of their last eightLeague games and fell in the Patriot League quarterfinals after the hot start.

HOME-COURT ADVANTAGEHome cooking is on the menu for Patriot League teams, and the host schools aredominating through the first six League contests. Home teams swept Wednesday’sgames and have won 11 of the past 12 Patriot League contests to improve to an 18-6record in League action. Lafayette, Lehigh and American are all perfect in threehome League games, while no team has a losing record on its home court. On theother side, only Lafayette, at 2-1, is at or above .500 on the road in League action. The home success is consistent with the entire season to date. Lehigh and Lafayetteare both 9-1 at home, while Army is 8-1 and Navy holds a 7-3 mark. Patriot Leagueteams are 49-26 at home this season and 24-68 at road or neutral sites.

LEHIGH’S HALL STARTS A NEW CLUBLehigh senior guard Marquis Hall entered a very exclusive club on Wednesday; infact, he’s the only member. Hall became the fourth Patriot Leaguer to go over 500career assists, and the first in League history with more than 1,300 points and 500assists to his name. Last year, American’s Derrick Mercer, the Patriot League Playerof the Year, became the first with 1,200 points and 500 assists. Hall is now 32ndwith 1,377 points, fourth with 503 assists and 19th with 159 steals in the Leaguecareer record book.

NAVY’S HARRIS COMPANY ALMOST AS EXCLUSIVEWhile Hall holds a singular spot in League history, Navy senior Chris Harris hasnow accomplished a feat that only one other Patriot Leaguer had ever done before. With his 150th career steal on Wednesday, Harris entered the Patriot League recordbook in that category. It is his fourth spot in the League record book, as Harris is al-ready in the charts as a 1,000-point scorer (1,434) and top 10 in three-pointersmade (258) and free-throw percentage (85.0). The only other Patriot Leaguer to oc-cupy a spot in those four categories was Bucknell’s Kevin Bettencourt, who starredfor the Bison from 2002-06.

MORE FOR THE RECORD BOOKSIn addition to Hall and Harris, four other players have a spot somewhere in theLeague record books. Colgate’s Kyle Roemer is the active career scoring leader with1,474 points, good for 22nd place. He is also five treys away from the top ten inLeague annals. Lehigh’s Zahir Carrington is in the 1,000-point (1,123) and 500-re-bound (585) clubs. Army’s Josh Miller is 20th all-time with 315 assists, while HolyCross’ Andrew Beinert is eighth in career three-point percentage.

FIRST-YEAR SUCCESSAmerican’s Vlad Moldoveanu and Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum are nowhere near theLeague record book, but they’re certainly on a pace for big things with huge firstseasons. A transfer from George Mason, Moldoveanu is lighting up the League in hisfirst go-round with the Eagles. His 23.0 points are the top mark in League action, and his 8.7 rebounds are second. Moldoveanu’s 37-point effort against Navy onWednesday was the highest in League play in almost exactly two years. McCollum isfourth in League action with 21.0 points per game, and third for the entire season at16.2. Each player has three consecutive 20-point efforts.

30 A REGULAR OCCURENCE IN 2010Another day of Patriot League games meant another 30-point effort for a PatriotLeague player on Wednesday. This time, it was American’s Vlad Moldoveanu scoring37 points at home against Navy, the most since Greg Sprink did it in the samematchup for the Mids two years ago. Patriot League players have scored 29 points ormore seven times in League action already after nobody did so last year. Lehigh’sC.J. McCollum and Navy’s Chris Harris have each hit or exceeded that numbertwice, while Colgate’s Kyle Roemer and Holy Cross’ Devin Brown have done it once.Nine 30-point performances have been recorded for the entire season after just sixwere last season. Harris has three of those efforts. Also, there have been eight 80+point efforts for teams in League action after just four were recorded last year.

PATRIOT LEAGUE NOTEBOOKWE’RE GETTING CLOSERThe early Patriot League action saw plenty of big differences, as 12 of the first 16 Leaguecontests were decided by double digits. But things have tightened up of late, with six ofthe last eight League games decided by single digits. Bucknell has provided its fans themost drama, as five of the Bison’s first six League games have been decided by fivepoints or less, including an 81-76 overtime win against Lehigh on Wednesday. Of the 10League games decided by single digits, seven were within five points or less.

COACHING MILESTONESAmerican’s Jeff Jones earned his 300th career win on Saturday against Holy Cross, afterearlier recording his 150th win at the school. He’s certainly not the only Patriot Leaguecoach with a milestone number this year. Lafayette Head Coach Fran O’Hanlon sur-passed the 200-victory plateau and also became the Patriot League all-time leader ingames coached. Emmett Davis won his 150th career game, all at Colgate, and Navy’ BillyLange won his 75th in Annapolis. Bucknell’s Dave Paulsen recorded his 275th careerwin on Jan. 13.

SUPER SOPHOMORESSix of the top 10 and eight of the top 13 scorers in the League are sophomores. Colgate’sYaw Gyawu, Navy’s Jordan Sugars, Holy Cross’ R.J. Evans, Lafayette’s Jim Mower, HolyCross’ Devin Brown and Army’s Julian Simmons are all in the top 10 in scoring on theLeague leaderboard. Sugars, despite standing just 6-foot-3, is second in the League with8.2 rebounds per game, with American’s Stephen Lumpkins third in rebounds (7.9) andsecond in blocked shots (1.7) per contest. Sophomores hold four of the top seven spotsin three-point field goals per game, and five of nine in three-point field goal percentage.

SUCCESS VS. NEC, IVY LEAGUE IN NON-LEAGUE PLAYThe Patriot League finished its non-League schedule with a 49-70 record, with 30 of thewins coming against rivals from the Northeast Conference and Ivy League. The PatriotLeague finished 17-7 against the NEC, and put up a 13-8 mark against the Ivy League.
