Program NotesDear friends of Cantata Singers,Welcome to CSO’s third program of the season. We have chosen to frame our year’sconcerts by exploring complementary subjects, and so we offer you sequel to the Dance ofDeath program by looking at light.

This idea has fascinated composers and musicians throughout the centuries, and they haveused the frequent mentions of light (lux) in the biblical texts much to their advantage. Asidefrom the beautiful religious sentiments and thoughts evoked in these texts, composers alsofind in them the opportunity to explicitly incorporate explorations of light into the realm ofsound.

In keeping with the idea of framing, this concert will start and end with Lux Antiqua byJordanNobles. Written for spatialized choir, this work is a beautiful and rich exploration ofcolours andtimbres in the voices, further enhanced by the disposition of the singers and bythe composer’smasterful handling of harmony.

Next is the first of tonight’s Lux Aeternas, by the Canadian composer Stephen Chatman, oneofCanada's most prominent composers, who teaches at the Composition Division at theUniversity of British Columbia, Vancouver since 1976. This six-minute-piece was writtenin 1999 for Calgary’s Kantorei choir, and is more characteristic of Chatman’s later pieces,in which he gradually departs from modernism and engages on a path towardspost-modernism, spirituality, and a wider audience. These later secular and sacred choralworks embrace a predominantly pan-diatonic tonal language, lyricism, melody, and moretraditional musical gestures, forms, and compositional techniques.

Brahms wrote Warum is das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen in his period of “highmaturity”,around the time of the first two symphonies, when he decided to return afterfifteen years toa cappella composition on a sacred text with his largest and most powerfulunaccompanied choral work. Warum (wherefore), as it is usually referred to colloquially, features virtuosity both on the compositional level and in the assembly of texts, whichBrahms was in fact quite proud of. His clever selection of Bible verses rivals that of hisGerman Requiem, particularly the strategicplacement of the New Testament reference toJob, from whence the first section of the motet is set. The work is full of romantic harmoniesand sensibility, with a careful treatment of register in order to enhance the idea of coloursand light, without making it too direct and obvious.

Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque (Light and Gold) has become a staple piece of choralconcertsaround North America, and is famous for its performance by Whitacre’s VirtualChoir, whereeveryone involved did so from in front of their computers at home. The piecesets a short poem by Edward Esch, which is translated to Latin by Charles Anthony Silvestri. It reads “Light,/warm and heavy as pure gold / and angels sing softly / to the new-bornbabe.” Speaking of the piece, Whitacre has said: “A simple approach was essential to thesuccess of the work, and I waited patiently for the tight harmonies to shimmer and glow.”

The next piece is Hymn to the Creator of Light by the English composer John Rutter, whosecompositions quote from music and poetry from Gregorian chant to African-Americanspirituals,from Elizabethan madrigals to 20th century classical works, from Bach to theBeatles. It was therefore completely appropriate that Rutter would craft a choral work such

Page 5: Patrons, Supporters and Friends of Cantata Singers of Ottawa … · 2013-05-22 · upon them, O Lord, with your saints for ever, for you are merciful. Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,

as this one in memory of the 20th century Anglican composer Herbert Howells by quotingmany of the latter’s works as well as by directly evoking his musical style. After a dense firstsection, which uses the chromatic harmonies characteristic of Howells’s music, emanationof light occurs gradually above the composer’s reintroduction of melodies and themes fromthe earlier parts of the piece.

Kurt Sander’s O Gladsome Light uses what is considered to be the earliest known Christianhymn recorded outside of the bible that is still being used today. The hymn is featured in thevespers of the Orthodox Church, and has been used by many composers for its potent subjectand its evocation of light. Sander’s music has been heard throughout North America, Europeand Russia, and he is active in the field of sacred Orthodox choral music. His researchinterests include the history and aesthetics of Russian liturgical music, the cross disciplinaryrelationship between theology and Orthodox iconography with music composition, and thework of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.

Exultet Iam Angelica Turba Caelorum (May the heavenly host of angels exult) is a Paschalmotetby the celebrated Venetian composer Giovanni Gabrieli. It is a seventeen-partpolychoral motet –the composer divided the seventeen parts over four choirs – and is meantto be performed in theearliest hours of Easter morning as the Paschal candle is being lit, andas the sun is about to rise. This dual incorporation of the physical emergence of light is takeninto consideration and wonderfully exploited by the composer, and offers us the chance tohear how a musician approached this same task more than three centuries earlier than mostfeatured on today’s program.

Morten Lauridsen is an American composer who was the composer in residence for theLosAngeles Master Chorale between 1994 and 2001 at the time when he wrote Lux Aeterna,a largework for choir whose middle movement is O Nata Lux. Referring to Lauridsen’ssacred music, the musicologist and conductor Nick Strimple said he was “the only Americancomposer in history who can be called a mystic, [whose] probing, serene work contains anelusive and indefinable ingredient which leaves the impression that all the questions havebeen answered…” His Latin sacred settings, such as today’s piece, often reference Gregorianchant plus Medieval and Renaissance procedures while blending them within a freshlycontemporary sound.

Finally, Peter Togni’s Requiem et Lux will reiterate the overall progression of the seasonfrom darkness to light, from Requiem to lux aeterna. Togni is an accomplished organist whohas performed around the world, and frequently holds talks and master classes on organandimprovisation in Halifax. He is also a broadcaster for CBC Radio 2 for programs likeThat Time of the Night, Stereo Morning, Weekender, and Choral Concert. When asked abouthis music, Togni said that sees his compositions as liturgical works that express (or amountto) more than music, and he hopes to see Christian art flourishing outside of churches aswell. His Requiem was recently arranged for marimbas and performed at Acadia Universityin December 2011.
