This Sunday’s Meeting Program

HAPPY (THAI) NEW YEAR! It is once

again Songkran when Thais celebrate the New

Year. For most of Thailand, this is a 3 day

period; for those of us in Pattaya, it goes on for

an entire week.

Our speaker last week mentioned that time is

constant; it is our perception of it that changes.

Likewise, it is our individual perception as to

whether Songkran in Pattaya is “sanuk” (fun)

or is “mayhem.”

However, there is a traditional celebration of

Songkran that involves water, but does not

include having it thrown all over you.

Traditional Songkran is showing respect to

monks and one’s elders by pouring lustral

water over their hands while giving and

receiving a blessing in return for the New Year.

This Sunday, the Club will again have its

traditional Songkran Celebration. There will be

a Buddha statue at the entrance so that you can

pour lustral water over the Buddha when you

enter. We expect to have honored Thai guests

in attendance for the ceremony including

Madam Stil Khunploem. Madam Stil is the

mother of Pattaya City Mayor Itthiphol

Khunploem and Bang Saen Mayor Narongchai

Khunploem. She is also the Chairperson of the

Thai Women’s Development Group. Khun Noi

from the Sanctuary of Truth will also be joining

us for the celebration.

So, please join us and our honored guests for

this traditional celebration of Songkran. Visit

here for photos from last year’s Club

celebration.

We will have the usual announcements of

upcoming events in and around Pattaya,

updates on club activities, and last, but not the

least, there will be an Open Forum, which is the

time for you to ask questions about living in

Thailand, or Pattaya. We ask you to offer your

own observations and suggestions on how to

live better in Pattaya. Your humorous stories

(jokes) are welcome, but remember you are in

mixed company. Whether you are a new Expat,

just visiting on holiday, or consider yourself an

"old hand" at being an Expat in Thailand, you

will find the Open Forum has humor and

helpful information to offer.

General Announcements

The following announcements are of general interest to most Expats and Foreign Visitors to Thailand

IMMIGRATION OFFICES CLOSED ON APRIL 13 AND 16 – Thai Immigration Offices will be

closed for the Thai Songkran Holiday on Friday and Monday. We have not received any information

on the status of Chonburi (Pattaya) Immigration Jomtien Soi 5 for Thursday, April 19, the day

Pattaya has their “official” Songkran celebration - even if open, you may want to consider doing your

business the day before or after as Thappraya Road from Pattaya and Jomtien Beach Road will be

bumper to bumper with slow moving traffic and it can take hours to go anywhere – not to mention all

the pickups and trucks that will have water barrels in the back and celebrants using buckets to pour

water from them on all in close proximity.

RE-ENTRY PERMITS FROM IMMIGRATION AT SUVARNABHUMI (BANGKOK)

AIRPORT – From various reports, it appears that you can obtain Re-entry permits at Suvarnabhumi

airport, but they are only available between 6am and midnight. The place for re-entry permits is just a

small desk staffed by one or two people. It is inside the Immigration queue area before you process

out. As soon as you enter the area, it's a hard left turn all the way to the far left wall. Remember to

have the proper paperwork – click here for list. Also, remember to allow extra time for the process.

Because of the reported long queues at the Suvarnabhumi Immigration counter, we strongly

recommend you obtain your Re-Entry permit from your local Immigration Office if at all possible

rather than risk the desk at the airport not being available (we have also received reports that

sometimes it is not staffed even during the prescribed hours).

SONGKRAN HOLIDAYS FRIDAY APRIL 13 TO FRIDAY, APRIL 20 –Note, during the

overall Songkran period from April 13 to April 20, you can expect to get wet if you venture out – so

wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet and protect your valuables, e.g., wrapping mobile phones,

wallets, etc. in plastic.

April 13, Friday to April 15, Sunday – Songkran generally celebrated throughout most of

Thailand. Although Pattaya’s official celebration period is later (see below), many businesses

will close during this period so their staff can return to their hometowns and villages to

celebrate the Thai New Year; some will remain closed through the 20th

. Also, those remaining

do not adhere to the official days for Pattaya, they start celebrating and water throwing when

the rest of Thailand does and continue on through the official days – Expect bus and rail

transportation to be very crowded the days immediately before and after the regular dates as

Thais return home before the holiday starts and return after. Also, based on past experience, it is

possible the Government may also declare Friday to be a Public Holiday.

April 16, Monday – Songkran – Public Holiday – This is the official public holiday

(“substitution” day) for Songkran.

April 17, Tuesday – Although this is a day in between the regular and Pattaya area Songkran

dates, it is most likely that some will not want to stop the fun for one day – so, expect that there

will still be some water throwing and you can still get wet.

April 18, Wednesday to April 20, Friday – Pattaya Songkran -These are the official days

designated for celebrating Songkran with activities planned in Naklua for Wednesday and

Friday and in Pattaya for Thursday - expect heavy traffic on 18th

and extremely heavy traffic in

Pattaya on 19th

(all the major roads including Sukhumvit and Jomtien Beach Road will be

bumper to bumper).

Club Announcements

The following announcements are of particular interest to Club members regarding Club activities and

benefits

NO BOOKS, DVDs, OR GIFT CERTIFICATES THIS COMING SUNDAY OR FRUGAL

FREDDY GET TOG ETHERS NEXT WEEK – Hawaii Bob is staying high and dry this week and

will not be here for Books, DVD's or gift certificates. There will be no Frugal Freddy dining on

Monday and Tuesday either.

CLUB DINNER FOR APRIL WILL BE AT ALOIS RESTAURANT AND WINE BAR ON

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25 – The dinner will start at 7pm as usual. Alois has a set menu every

evening at a fixed price but leaves open the possibility of ordering ala carte. Alois is located on

Thappraya Road – going toward Jomtien; it is on the right hand side after you pass the 3rd

Road (Bali

Hai Pier) overpass. Please put your name on the signup sheet at Sunday’s meeting if you plan to

attend or you can email [email protected] – this will allow us to inform Khun Vichai

of the number to expect. If you signup and cannot attend, we request that you let us know so we can

amend the number given to the restaurant. The restaurant’s website is http://www.aloispattaya.com/ -

for map http://www.aloispattaya.com/contact.html.

GETTING A THAI DRIVING LICENSE PROCESS HAS CHANGED – EXPECT IT TO

TAKE LONGER – Fellow Member Hans (Jon) Stroosnyder provides driving license assistance by

escorting anyone interested in obtaining or renewing a Thai Driving License, usually on the first

Wednesday, each month. Hans advises that things have changed at the Banglamung Land Transport

Office in the process there – and it is not for the better. We are hoping it is not a permanent change.

Before there was a table at the building entrance where you lined up, had your paperwork checked,

and were given a queue number – not any more, now everyone obtains a number upstairs.

Previously, queue numbers were called so that about 30 persons were admitted at a time to the testing

area (color chart, reaction time, lateral vision, etc.). Now it appears that about 60 or more are

crowded in shoulder to shoulder. Hans also said their seemed to be about half the number of staff

working in the section, further slowing down the process. So, it now takes several hours to complete

the process, e.g., arrive at 8:30am and finish in early afternoon whereas before you usually had your

license issued and left around 10 to 11am.

BANGLAMUNG DISTRICT CROSS CULTURAL VOLUNTEER GROUP IS STILL

ACCEPTING VOLUNTEERS – The Group is asking for additional Volunteers to help in an

English Language Improvement and Conversation Program for Pattaya City Hall staff (sponsored by

the Pattaya City Department of Education). The start date for these classes was Tuesday, April 3rd.

The classes are held in the Education Dept. offices on the second floor of City Hall Building #2

(immediately behind the main City Hall building). Classes, after the Opening Day, are from 4:30pm

to 6:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a total of 30 hours (20 classes). The object of these

classes is to enable City Hall staff to meet, and assist, English speakers who come to City Hall for

help. If you are interested in joining the Group, please list yourself on the BANGLAMUNG sign-up

sheet at this Sunday’s PCEC Meeting. Organizer Richard Smith will send you, by email, more

information - including directions to the Education Department, details of the kind of teaching

anticipated, the class makeup, and answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to attend

this Sunday’s PCEC meeting, please email your contact information to Richard at

[email protected], or call him at 089-244-9523 or 038-412197 to list yourself as a Volunteer.

DO YOU HAVE A YAHOO OR HOTMAIL EMAIL ACCOUNT – CONSIDER CHANGING

YOUR PASSWORD FAIRLY OFTEN – We continue to receive emails at the Club’s email

addresses that are not legitimate. They are primarily from those that have yahoo or hotmail email

accounts. There is no subject shown and the text consists only of a link to an internet site (which may

contain a virus or malware if you go to the linked website). The address line usually has several

addresses in alphabetical order coming from the email account holder’s address/contacts book. In

May 2011, we posted an alert in the Newsletter and an article on the website warning about the

hacking of email accounts – click here to read the article.

HAVE SOMETHING YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH YOUR FELLOW EXPATS? -- Often at

the Sunday meeting during the Open Forum, announcements are made about events, new restaurants,

etc. This information is much appreciated by the one hundred plus attendees – but what about those

that are not at the meeting. Why not share with them. Our weekly Newsletter is distributed to over

1,500 people living here in Thailand and the rest of the world. Just send an email with the usual who,

what, when, where information to [email protected] or [email protected].

WE ARE ALWAYS ON THE LOOK OUT FOR INTERESTING SPEAKERS – The Club’s

Program Committee endeavors to obtain interesting speakers for the Club’s Sunday meetings. This

can sometimes be a daunting task as we have 52 meetings a year. If you know of someone with an

interesting topic, please let us know along with how to contact them. If you don’t know a particular

speaker, but have a topic you think will be interesting, then pass it on; we will then try to find a

knowledgeable speaker for the topic. To make suggestions for speakers or topics, please email

[email protected].

ARE YOU GOING AWAY DURING SONGKRAN? We are always interested in hearing

presentations about traveling in other countries, so if you're going to another country during

Songkran, please consider the possibility of making a presentation about your travels at a future

Club meeting. Take lots of photos and notes not only about the places you visit, but also tips for

lodging, transportation, currency exchange, bargains, etc. – information that will be handy for a

fellow Club member who might want to visit the country. If you're interested, contact Pat at

[email protected].

9

PATTAYA CITY EXPATS CLUB NEWSLETTER April 13, 2012

Last Week’s Meeting

Master of Ceremonies Richard Silverberg

introduced Ren Lexander whose topic was “The

Rest of Our Lives.” Ren at his birth was named

Garry Ross Sargeant. He was born on a small

farm in Toongabbie, to the west of Sydney,

Australia. His mother managed the farm. His

father was a truck driver. His only sibling, his

elder brother, Bruce, had cerebral palsy with

epilepsy. By the age of 26, Ren had a PhD in

philosophy with a thesis topic of 'Objectivity'. At

the same age, he embarked on a quest to

understand the meaning of life. That quest took

him through a study of experiential psychology,

philosophy and Gnostic spirituality. He is the

author of several books and has various levels of

qualifications in Jungian sandplay,

hypnotherapy, dreamwork and breathwork. He

also has a black belt in Aikido.

Ren started his presentation by noting that most

people overestimate what they can accomplish in

a day, a month, or even a year; but they

invariably underestimate what they can

accomplish in a decade. The reason, he believes,

is because of one’s perception of time. When we

are young, time moves slowly, but as we grow

older, it moves more quickly. Of course that is

not correct, time is a constant; what changed was

our perception of it. As an example, Ren

explained that to a small child, a 10 Baht coin is

large, but not so to an adult. The coin is the

same, it is the perception of it that differs.

He then displayed some charts on longevity

showing anticipated life expectancy based on

when you were born. However, he pointed out

that the longer you live; your life expectancy will

go up. For example, if you live to age 60, your

life expectancy will be to age 84. If you live to

age 80, it will have increased to age 89.

However, this is based on having a good life

style; if not then at age 60 your life expectancy

will be 73. What is a good lifestyle for achieving

a longer life? Ren said he follows the four

“W’s” – Walking, Weights, Water, and Waist.

Ren cited a study of 70 year olds. In the study

group, none of the participants that walked at a

pace of 5km per hour for 30 minutes had died.

The use of weights also is very beneficial

according to Ren. He called this the lazy man’s

exercise. It doesn’t have to be done on a daily

basis. The primary goal is to increase the number

of repetitions each time (or increase the amount

of weights used). He also emphasized the

importance of hydration saying that in a climate

such as Thailand, you should have consumed at

least 2 liters of water by lunch time to maintain

proper hydration.

The fourth “W” was for waist. You should

control your weight and eat healthy. He gave

several examples including eating nuts for

breakfast as they provide excellent nutrition.

Also, he pointed out that dark chocolate can

help. He said it takes the brain 20 minutes after

the body is full to get the message.

Consequently, we continue to eat. He suggested

eating a small quantity of dark chocolate as the

taste remains with you for those 20 minutes that

it takes the brain to realize you are full; thus the

body thinks it is still eating during this period.

He also gave several other pointers that have a

bearing on proper nutrition including don’t bring

bread or sugar into your home, the advantages of

selenium and how human growth hormones

affect your body.

In conclusion, Ren said that you should not

follow the motto, Carpe Diem (seize the day);

but rather follow the motto “Seize the Decade.”

Richard Silverberg then called on Al Serrato to

conduct the always informative and sometime

humorous Open Forum.
