“The new (Vortex™) screw mixes fastand is very consistent. It does a greatjob processing all of my ingredients, including round bales and alternativeenergy sources – pizza crusts, driedwhey, and beet pulp. The ration is verywell mixed in a shorter period of time. It’s much more efficient. I’m not mixingas long so I’m saving fuel.”

Feeding a thorough, consistentTMR is essential to maintaining

a healthy herd and a high level ofproduction. Nutritionists providethe "paper" recipe for a herd’sideal ration, but more often thannot, the actual ration fed is notthat "ideal" mix. Jim Dickrellof Dairy Today explored thisdiscrepancy in an interview withDr. Tom Oelberg, field technicalservices specialist.

Oelberg conducts on-farm TMRaudits to help producers improveTMR consistency and feedingefficiency. Each audit requiresthat he carefully observe thefeeding process, paying particularattention to the condition ofthe mixer, mixing order, andmixing time.

Based on his observations and Penn State Shaker Box tests, Oelberg identified the followingas major contributors to mixingproblems:

1. Mixer overfilling.2. Worn mixer parts. 3. Not mixing long enough. 4. Improper loading of liquids. After implementing Oelberg’srecommendations, milk responsesof 1-2 lbs./cow/day are commonwith some producers reporting 0.2-0.4 percentage pointincreases in butterfat!Source: "Audit Your TMR" article by JimDickrell. PATZ A1™ SERIES II RAISES STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE The biggestproblem withsilage? SAFETY!

As part of the Penn StateCooperative Extension dairy

team, Dr. Ken Griswold is noamateur when it comes to workingwith silos. Last fall, he proved thatno matter how much experienceyou have, no one is immune tosafety hazards.

Shortly after working in a silo,Griswold was rushed to theemergency room, coughing upblood and experiencing difficultybreathing. Doctors diagnosed himwith silo filler’s disease, an illnesscaused by exposure to silo gases.

After this harrowing experience,Dr. Griswold shared his story andspread the word about silo safetyat the Vita Plus Custom HarvesterMeeting in Madison, WI.

Griswold recommendsthat no one enter asilo for 21 days afterforage is put up. Ifyou absolutely mustenter, follow these tips:

• With doors closed, use ablower to ventilate the silofor a minimum of 30minutes before entering.

• Keep the fans running theentire time you’re in thesilo.

• Do not enter the silo fromthe top.

• If you see or smell gas atany time, get outimmediately.

• Tell someone if you will beworking in or around a silo!
