The Canadian economy is closely linked to that of the United States. As such there has been an economic impact but this impact has thus far been mitigated and there was a strong rebound in late 2009 and early 2010

Pervious concrete is a special type of high porosity concrete used where applications require water from precipitation and other sources to pass directly through.

It helps reduce stormwater runoff, replenishes aquifers, protects streams and lakes and allows water and oxygen to reach tree roots.

Ready-Mix is the optimal Business Unit in the Holcim Value Chain for solutions delivery. Innovations in products and services have made the Ready-Mix Business Units into market leaders

Specialty concretes were almost 10% of Demix Beton’s volumes in 2009.

Flex concrete is a bending application used with City of Montreal as well as Montreal airport and ports.

Self-Placing is fluid and homogeneous with minimal segregation and bleeding; used primarily for vertical applications.

Anti-Corrosion concrete inhibits the corrosion of steel reinforcement.

In 2009, Dufferin Concrete won multiple awards for a system that ensures no chute wash water is released into the environment by returning the water used to clean the chute back into the truck’s drum.

The benefits are in cost savings and also a stronger job site environment scorecard which aids in LEEDS points.

LEEDS: Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design

Dufferin Construction, one of the leading highway contractors for the province of Ontario, has been low bidder on 3 RBRs in Ottawa and Hamilton. RBRs are the replacement of a highway bridge overpass over the course of a weekend where the entire bridge is removed and replaced with sectionals built in a nearby staging area. RBR is not only more economical but also offers solutions to the Municipalities in terms of less traffic congestion, a shorter construction cycle and benefits to the public.

Since 1975, Dufferin Construction has been responsible for ‘air-side’ snow removal at Pearson airport – a 24hrs/day, 6months/year contract. 250 DCC personnel have Government of Canada security clearance and are available on 1 hour notice.

The activity not only provides cash flow and operations during traditionally slow construction months but also ensure equipment utilization over the period.

Material recycling has been critical in allowing waste materials deposit sales and also in construction cost reduction.

In 2009, Demix Aggregates sold 230kt of recycled aggregates primarily to Demix Construction’s A-25 PPP project. Additional opportunities for asphalt recycling are being investigated to lower operating costs for construction and provide a potential revenue stream for aggregates.

A key area of growth for Holcim Canada is participation in Public-Private Partnerships in projects across Canada

• Public Private Partnerships (PPP) are an alternative method for governments to meet the public’s infrastructure needs

• Through long-term PPP contracts that have design, build, finance and operate components, governments can access private sector expertise, technology and capital

Holcim Canada is committed to sustainability and this commitment is embedded in the company’s business strategies and day-to-day management.

• One of the largest and most environmentally responsible suppliers of cement in Canada.

• Ongoing technological advancements designed to meet the increasing marketplace needs, improved environmental performance, enhanced employee safety and mitigate potential impacts on the local community.

• Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Environmental Performance are mindsets that are firmly embedded throughout HCA.

• Over the past 10 years, more than $100 million have been invested at the Mississauga Plant, in support of our particulate matter (PM 2.5 and 10), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emission reduction efforts.

CO2 EmissionsWe are making constant, measurable progress. Since 1990, we have reduced the net production of CO2 per tonne of cement by more than 30%.

• Approximately 60% of CO2 emissions from the cement sector result from the chemical process that converts the calcium carbonate in limestone to calcium oxide during the production of clinker.

• By using suitable industrial by-products, such as slag from the steel industry, as Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM) – either directly in manufacturing or in cement mixes – we minimize this chemical reaction and the related greenhouse gas emissions.

• To this end the Plant spent $88 million on a Vertical Roller Mill to produce GranCem®, a high quality slag cement. HCA investments in GranCem® production have contributed to a reduction in our clinker factor, resulting in a significant permanent decrease in our net specific CO2 emissions.

• The Plant also continues to optimize its use of other SCMs (such as limestone additions) to reduce its overall CO2 emissions intensity.

Particulate Matter (PM10, PM2.5)Holcim Canada recognizes concern that the emission of fine particulates are a concern in the Clarkson airshed. • The Mississauga Cement Plant has made investments to control these emissions, in both “filterable” and

secondary (condensable) fractions, from all our stacks, as well as from other fugitive sources.

Installation of Opacity monitors

Installation of Teflon bags in system baghouse

Reduction of precursor chemical compounds (NOx, SO2 and Ammonia)

These state-of-the-art bags are rated to achieve control of PM1 (ultrafine particulates). This led to a 79%

reduction in PM, PM10, and PM2.5 from 2006 to 2009 due to phased in installation of new bags. Represents

“Best Available Control Technology” for the cement sector.

Mississauga Cement Plant February 15, 2011

• Recent emission reduction initiatives include:

• Fugitive Dust Control (Plant and boat loading)

• Road paving

• Installation of water sprinklers

• Use of water, vacuum and sweeper trucks

• Dry fog water spraying

• Installation of a wet dust suppression system

• Dust spray on off-loading stone

• Greening of the Plant through tree plantings, among other initiatives

• Spillage reduction through housekeeping improvement initiatives

• Replacement of Particulate Controls on all stacks

• State-of-the-art C730 system baghouse replacing Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP)

• F280 cooler baghouse replacing Gravel Bed Filter

• Installation of bypass stack baghouse

• Slag grinding and drying system

• CM#7 separator baghouse

• Installation of AFM baghouse replacing ESP

• Installation of Vertical Roller Mill de-dusting system1

As a member of the Southwest GTA Task Force, Holcim took the commitment one step further by working together with key influencers and groups within the community to make recommendations to improve the quality of the Clarkson Airshed.

• Holcim continues to promote that the Ontario GHG policy should incorporate the following: A uniform CO2 intensity standard should be adopted. This standard should be expressed in a

form (e.g. kg CO2 per tonne of cement) which recognizes and incents the important role that supplementary cement substitutes can play in reducing GHG emissions from cement manufacturing;

The use of alternative energies from biomass, engineered fuels, residual materials and other combustible by-products should be encouraged in GHG regulations and policy, and

Aggressive adoption of the new National and Ontario building code standards (release in Q1, 2011) that allow for the increased use of SCMs. Ontario should be progressive in encouraging the maximum use of less carbon intensive cementitious materials that will be allowable under the new code in government projects and procurement. Ontario should initiate the development of the next level of building code changes which would allow for a more aggressive use of SCMs, to align with leading jurisdictions.

• We intend to remain a leader in sustainable performance through further innovation and work with the community and local government and health agencies to implement measures to improve air quality in the Clarkson Airshed.
